Wood Wheels

Cruisin' on my Bluebird
This is the first bike I have owned with wood wheels. 1898 Iver Johnson tandem. The wood rims & new spokes laced into them & the solid rubber tires. How do these tires stay onto the rims?

When the bike was new, they used Shellac to glue the tires on. Now most tubular tire companies make their own special glue. There is also special tape that you can use instead of glue.

The current mastic is really good stuff...

It basically never oxidizes, stays elastic, and becomes glue again with solvent.

Shellac is brittle after it dries and is difficult to remove.

Tufo tape would also be a booger to remove from wood rims, unless you put a couple of mastic coats on the rims first.

contact cement or rubber cement from a office supply supply storer go to a bicycle shop and get the glue that is used to glue on "sew up tires"
