They are steel. I think I've heard them referred to as razor edge or something like that due to the fact that there is no hem along the sides. These edges are remarkably straight. Also notable they install over the fork.

Had a red '59 and I did like the way it rode

Just picked this up. It is a little crusty but solid. Is there any interest in it "as found"? I put a tiny bit of oil in the kickstand pivot to stand it up and raised the seat in order to put it on the stand. Thought I might ask before I start cleaning it up.

Yes There is a difference between a 26x1.75 and 26x 1 3/4. The latter being designated for Schwinns (S-7) It is the inside diameter that makes them incompatible.
