Interesting. The frame on that early tandem is different yet from mine. Much of the detailing is similar, but apart from the obvious frame differences, the head tube on my bike is not lugged at the top and bottom like the one shown on your site. Aside from that, this bike does have mount...
Thanks. It certainly seemed questionable at the start, but I tend to look at these things with rose-colored goggles... But yeah, it came out pretty well all things considered. I have it in the back of my mind that I ought to respoke the wheels. The original spokes are intact so far, but they...
One more thing that might be a clue: as I've said above, the badge shape impression in the paint does not match the Colson badge that came with it. It also does not match any of the Colson badges I've found googling it. It does match, however, Firestone badges of the era. There are several on...
Thanks for the info. Regarding the fork, it doesn't have dropouts. I had to spread the fork legs to get the axle out and back in again when I mounted new tires. A little more clean up over the weekend....
I swapped out the bars, grips & stem for ones I had that were somewhat similar...
So, I put it on the stand and started dousing it liberally with PB blaster. To my surprise, most all of the hardware came free. Also surprising, underneath the oxidization and rust staining, a lot of the original paint was still there. I spent a few hours with steelwool, WD40 and even...
I found this bike at the Spring Carlisle swap meet yesterday.
I don't know what it is, but a skiptooth balloon tire bike with a straight downtube ought to be interested either way, right?
The seller (who also didn't know what it was, but was sure it was prewar) wanted $75, I offered $50, we...
Maybe I'll go with "929" until I can make a better determination. I got it with a fairly matching '51 BFGoodrich men's bike. Similar colors, similar equipment, so it stands to reason that they were purchased at the same time. It does strike me as funny that his & hers had chosen different...
I don't see any indication of a tank. The paint, while spattered with rust spots, doesn't have any rubbed or worn areas around were a tank might touch. You never know for sure, but it doesn't look like it to me.
Yes, except, in the picture, the Equipped model uses a slightly-curved bar DX frame, not a straight bar. Mine is distinctly straight (I have a DX to compare to). However, that catalog page is from '52, and the bike is a '51. Since the TR Findley site doesn't have the comparable '51 pages, we...
I picked this up over the weekend, paired with a BFGoodrich-Schwinn.
My other Firestone is Huffman-built, but this one looks closely related to my Monark Rocket. Same carrier, same style sprocket, same double pin striping, etc. It does have a serial tag under the BB, like I've...
I picked this up in Buffalo over the weekend, for about $80:
It's a BF Goodrich-branded Schwinn, based on the serial number, a 1951. Largely intact, but missing the saddle, fender light, and I'm guessing the original fork. The fork looks to me like one on my AMF Roadmaster middleweight...
For quite a while, I had them in the dining room, which is also the house's central room (open floorplan, no hallways).
However, the collection ballooned and I was forced to set up the basement as a bike shop. I have been known, however, to occasionally bring the stand and tools up to...
Thanks for all the info. I don't have a truing stand yet, it's on my list once I get my new workbench in place. Right now, I have very limited room to work with. But learning to lace wheels is something that I'm planning on doing real soon anyway. I just have too many bikes with special...
Looks like there are several similarities to an AMF that I have. The crimped dropouts and fork look very much the same, but clearly the curvature of the downtube and cantilever tubes are different. Similar construction though, I think.
Well, I'm not saying it is a Paramount, per se. It isn't badged "Paramount", as later Paramount Tandems were, but rather just as "Tandem". I'd sooner say that it is, essentially, the forerunner to the Paramount Tandem line.
It seems to be constructed much the same as the later Paramount...
Alright, well, the question now is: what do I do with it? To be clear, the question is somewhat rhetorical; at the end of the day, I'll do with it what best suits me. I just have to figure out what that is. I bought it because I wanted a straightbar frame of some sort with a tank for a...
Great, thanks. Can somebody tell me if the sprocket is correct for a Huffman bike of that vintage? It looks a bit like a Wald-style to me, but I don't know what a correct one would look like. Also, what make rear hub would Huffman have been likely to use?
Ok, so assuming that this is a '55-'57 middleweight, were would the number be located? I haven't found anything that I would consider a "number plate" that would classify it as a ballooner...
Thanks for the info. That bike should be, I think, fillet brazed rather than welded. The Paramount singles were always lugged, but the Superiors and New Worlds were fillet brazed, as were the Paramount tandems.
Well, I had thought that going to Waterford might be the next step if no one here could narrow it down. Looks like maybe that's what I'll have to do...
REC, the work that you've done thus far - this just deals with the "normal" production Schwinns? Or have you looked into sequencing of the Paramount, Superior, etc models as well? Not to derail the topic, but I've got a postwar tandem (in this thread...
Oh, OK, I'd read otherwise. Is there a way to move the thread?
So, there is a tag with a serial number, not a number stamped on the frame itself? If that's the case, mine may well be gone.
I've got this Monark Rocket that I picked up from a guy that was going to part it out (I can't stand it when people part out perfectly fuctional and intact bikes).
Beyond what's already missing in the photos, the seller had already sold off the wheels/tires before I got to it...
As far as I can tell, the chainring, color and striping all match details shown in the '38 or so catalog for the Superior, but the fork is Paramount in design. I strongly suspect that the 3-speed freewheel was quickly surpassed with 4 and 5-speeds, so that really ought to narrow down the time...
Thanks for looking. The 5-digit serial is why I'm stumped as well. That was why I thought it didn't match the post-fire records, so I'm assuming that was built prior to that. Is there anything else I can show that would be helpful?
I bought this last summer for cheap, but its pretty rough. It's a 26" DX, but I'm not sure about a specific model. The chain ring & crank has apparently been swapped for a big 52t set, so the crank stamping isn't helpful in dating this thing. Obviously, everything has been sprayed with flat...
Oh, yeah, absolutely. I have a hard time letting go of them anyway. Buy quandry now is if I should try to restore the striping, repaint it and have it restriped, or leave the finish as is. There are a lot of large chips and scrapes in the paint, otherwise I wouldn't consider repainting it...
Last is a Murray Meteorflite. This seems to be yet another customized ride. It looks like someone repainted it and tried their hand and reproducing the decals. It think its a '62 or '63, but the serial number is partially covered.
Missing the front fender, truss and...
Next is an AMF Roadmaster. Fairly basic, I think - doesn't look like it originally had a tank.
Has a Troxel saddle, peaked fenders. Missing the chainguard and one grip, but would probably be fairly rideable with new tubes. I just added the Skyrider tank, shown in the last...
I have three 26" middle weight boys bikes for sale, of which I'd like to sell two of. I can't decide which to sell and which one to keep, so I'll offer all three and see what happens. The first is a Ross Deluxe tank bike. Near as I can tell, it's from the early '60s.
This must...
I picked this up last night, found on craigslist locally, for $120:
I believe it to be Huffman built. There is a serial under the bottom bracket and on the left dropout. Under the BB: 178-9A-79. On the dropout: 5H067690.
Can someone tell me the year, and maybe something more...
OK, so here's my tale. Last fall, someone I know in a local bike club forwarded to me an email from an aquintance of theirs. This individual had an old Schwinn tandem bike that he was looking to give away. He was moving to NC and didn't want to take it. My friend already had 4 tandems and...
