I went for a morning ride on the 41 Air Flite and my 36 Firestone. Passing through a small nearby town last fall I saw the AirFlite leaning against a tree on someones' property with a "free" sign on it. It had been standing there almost a month and nobody wanted to adopt this baby. Only think...
If that badge is still available I will take it. I would send you a pm but I have forgotten how, have not posted here in a long long time. I know you don't ship to Canada ban American CABER will purchase it for me if available. Please PM me, thanks
Rideahiggins is correct! I don't know about other countries but up here in Canada in 1934 it became law to have the bottom portion of your rear fender painted white for night reflective purposes. We sometimes use this law to date our old bikes if we're unsure. No sign of white paint on the rear...
I recently purchased what I've been told is a 47 CWC built Hawthorne, I bought it knowing there were a few wrong and missing parts on her and now it's time to correct that. Here is what I need, a decent set of Torrington 8 pedals, a rear reflector, headlight and original bars, mine are repop. I...
Friday I picked up my latest and hopefully final acquisition, a late 40s CWC Hawthorne. It's my first CWC bike, the serial number starts with the letter D, I think the first letter in CWC signifies the year, if that is the case what year was the letter D used? It also came with repro...
Here are my contributions to the rust bucket thread, a 36 Firestone and a 36 CCM Ranger. I have zero interest in nice shiny bikes, rust, dings, dents and crust in general rock my world!
Thanks for the info guys! Post war CWC works for me too, I've always wanted those CWC springer forks! So if it is mid 50s that would be after CWC was bought out? Tankless model?
I finally found a way to cut down on the exorbitant cross border costs, there's a USA parcel service 45 minutes from me that will receive anything from bikes to boats. So I purchased this CWC Hawthorne, seller was unsure of the year but it is a skiptooth so I'm thinking prewar. Did this model...
When my daughter was 6 or so I was teaching her how to ride safely on the street. She was behind me on a street where cars were parked all along the curb so we were riding next to the parked cars. I kept looking back over my shoulder to ensure daughter was ok, well, I looked back one too many...
The Sunshine Bicycle Company was based in Waterloo Ontario, they produced tricycles, middle weight bikes, and of course heavyweight balloon tire bikes. I believe the bicycle division of the Sunshine company was absorbed by CCM in the mid 50s. They are extremely tough to find here in...
I'm with Andrew on this, I've spent my lifetime working in these old turn of the previous century buildings with the wood block floors, they are over 100 years old and still as durable as the day the day they were made.
I have a chance to buy this bike, the person says it is a Sunshine, a not very common Canadian ballooner, but I'm seeing what I think is a Schwinn chain ring and guard, it has no badge but is similar to what a Sunshine should look like. Schwinn or not ? Thanks folks
I have a reflector hoarding problem, a big cardboard box full of reflectors from bikes that I've scrapped after I salvaged parts, nothing overly vintage though!
When Scott sent me my Firestone via UPS they opened the box too and lost the small box inside the big box containing the pedals, binder bolt, axles, etc, never to be seen again.
Andrew hit the nail on the head. It's a stunning and beautiful bike but unfortunately the market is very narrow. I have sold many Raleigh 3 speeds up here in Canada, but none that old, mine have been mostly 50s-60s Raleighs. In my opinion you would have better luck selling it in Europe or Canada.
My friend bought a beautiful old ccm,all complete
problem is very loose original grips, thought of shimming them but is that a better solution? Thanks folks!
Just to add to what Rob said, that flightliner was built by Murray for Sears stores, J. C. Higgins was their house brand. If you turn it over, under the pedal crank you will see he serial number start with MOS, that means Murray Ohio Sears. Other then that do exactly what SpitFire suggested...
Not bike related but I had a nice score for my other passion, vintage advertising. My neighbor was moving today so I went to shake his hand and wish him the best. I met him in the garage where he was cleaning out the last of his goods, I noticed something nailed to the wall and asked if he was...
Scott is the Huffman guru, if he says 1946 then that is what it is. I always thought the first number after the H signified the year, perhaps that rule does not apply to the war years?
Nice Huffman! I believe the Huffman serial numbers work like this......The letter H signifies Huffman, then the first number after the H is the year. Yours being a 3 would make it either a 43, or 53, with 43 being the most likely.
That might be bit of a tough sell for a grand......for starters you have the incorrect seat and ladies bikes unfortunately don't command as much as a men's bike.
Sped, there is a wingbar frame for sale not so far from me, this is what the fellow has, if you're interested shoot me a pm and I'll give you his details.
I found this Peugeot road bike at a yard sale for 30 dollars Friday night, completely original minus the seat, my first time seeing a road bike with original head light and tail light. These are definitely not my cup of tea so a quick flip was in order, it sold quickly in the local online ads...
In the fall of 1949 in honour of the Yankee clipper the Yankees held a Joe DiMaggio day, he is pictured here with the mayor of NYC, Mel Allen and others as he receives gifts including a new bicycle for his son Joe Jr :) By the way Nick, great idea for a thread! I wanna see pics....
Thanks guys! When I turned his so called vintage signs over to the back side I could easily feel where he had neatly scraped off the barcode sticker, everyone should have spotted that but some folks are too trusting.
A few months ago at a local flea market I called a shady dealer out on his method of business, more then a little upset he was. I love advertising, especially tobacco tins, Pepsi/Coke, gas /oil signs etc. This dude was blatantly passing off his repop signs as the real deal, folks were stopping...
I gotta agree with Dean.......recently I tried using turtle wax on my Firestone, very bad idea, the beautiful patina turned milky white. A soft cloth wipedown with wd40 restored everything to its natural state. Stay far away from any form of wax on that beauty!
