The Saturday night garage crawl ride falls on the Thomas Stevens International Bike Ride Weekend. In 1884-86 Thomas was the first man to ride his High Wheel around the world. To celebrate the 140-year anniversary the ride weekend will be done all over the world. The US goal is at least 3466...
Thanks for the info Leon. I haven't looked at the Serial/model numbers yet, but if I were to guess, I'd say it is probably a 1953. Most likely the secondhand story either got the date she got it wrong, or she got a used bike for her birthday.
Well. you never know where another one will turn up. This one was right in my back yard, so to speak. A good friend clued me in that it was on Marketplace near me. A little rough, but only 20 mins away and the price was right. Missing the headlight (why are they always?) Seller said he got it...
Just want to SHOUT OUT a special THANK YOU to Pappy at Acme Brass & Plating for the shiny stuff, and also to Floyd at Wet Dog Graphics for the rivets that are holding everything back together! Two great CABE members that have helped me along with this pie-crust project.
For now, I'm just having...
A week or two ago I picked up this pre-war 40-41 steel frame Monark. It had been heavily farmer accessorized, with many non-bicycle accessories. Among the worst IMO, was the large 18-wheel trucker style rear mudflap, attached to the rear drop stand (WTF) that included an original war-era Morse...
The parts are at Acme Brass and Plating in KC right now. Pappy could explain the process better that I do, but basically, they do a chrome, nickel, copper removal dip to get what little old was still left. This gets it to bare clean metal before they add the new plating. The old rivets had to be...
I just want to thank these guys that have help me answer my question and help get me move forward with the project. This is what is so great about this hobby, and the CABE. The bikes are great, but it's the people that are willing to help out a fellow collector/hobbyist when needed. Special...
Looking for some help and advice! I have this very crusty Monark pie-crust Flo-cycle chain ring I am wanting/needing to have re-chromed for my Flo-cycle project. Before I drill out the rivets to separate the 2 parts I would like to have a plan for re-riveting them back together that will look...
Great swap with great people. Not as big as it used to be, but visiting James Allen's Peddlers Bike Museum is always awesome! A fun and worthwhile event!
Only 11 degrees in the barn/shop today so I didn't waste a lot of time weighting all of them. These were the 2 I figured would be the heaviest. Coming in 2nd is my 1953 Monark Super Deluxe (Buddy's Bike) at 54.4 #. And the winner, in my shop anyway, is the 1945 CWC "Hoffman Beverage Company."...
Not one of the Deluxe Rockets with the rare metal tank protective shrouds, that this thread is about, but from what I can tell from the S# it appears to be a 1953 basic Model Rocket. Cool bike, clean it up and enjoy!
Yep, what ricobike said. Your bike is what is generally referred to as a Monark 4 bar. The men's version a 5 bar. Or the Champion frame 4 or 5 bar. That is a totally different bike than the Rocket bikes that this thread is about. Most of the Monark 4 Bar or 5 Bar frame bikes that I've had, had...
Another confirmed 1953 girls Super Chief has showed up on a Monark Facebook group page the other day. It is in very good mostly complete shape in Yellow and Black. This one has a Rocket Ray that looks to be OG color and original to the bike.
Model Number: 67 158, Serial number: 1412948, Belongs...
Yep, that definitely looks like one! Please add more pictures and the Model/Serial Number when you get it! Congratulations.
Edit: On a closer look, this bike appears to have the standard double spring Monark fork, and the Red/white w/ black frame color scheme of the regular Monark Rocket, but...
On the other hand... Powder Coating is usually cheaper and less work for you. But as stated before it is harder to second stage color or add decals.
However, a really good powder coater can two and even 3 stage powder and decals. But, most industrial powder coaters don't want to mess with it...
True automotive grade enamel is getting harder to find but is probably closest to what was used originally on most single stage painted bikes. It is very slow drying, thus the reason some bake it to speed up the process, but not necessary if you are patient. Rattle can enamel is junk. I usually...
Thanks Leon, you are correct! The aluminum frame is indeed a Hawthorne Duralium Air-Flow rather than a Flo-Cycle. I am not very knowledgeable with the early aluminum frame bikes and had heard/seen them all generally referred to as Flo-Cycles, but I later found an add from '36 showing the...
Picked up these two Monark pre-war frames at Haysville this weekend, and as usual I can't make any since out of the serial numbers using the widely inaccurate Monark serial number charts that are floating around.
I'm guessing the Flo-Cycle frame number 17838 is probably '36 or 37, and most...
I'd agree with it probably being a 1940. I've had 5 pre-war steel frame Monarks with the serial number stamped on the right rear bracket like that, and 4 of those started with the letter C. 2 were '39s, 3 were '40-41s. I had one '39 stamped under the crank, and several I couldn't find a serial...
A0897670 serial number would be a 1951. Great score! The Monark book By John is a good book with lots of good Co. history and pictures of ads from over the years. Scott here on the CABE (SM2501) was selling them. You might PM him to see if he has any.
I picked up this fun Delphos Bending Co. "Space Commander Rocket Ship" over the weekend at the Tulsa Flee Market. Had to have it since I'd never seen one before. It was missing the front foot pegs, dash & hand controls/grips. I was able to find a few pictures of some OG Rockets and quickly made...
This is a very large 100 years of Schwinn timeline poster. It is 5 feet long. I've had this poster for years, but never got it framed. Now the walls of my shop are all covered, and I don't have room for it so I'm passing it on for someone else's shop or garage. $20 shipped rolled up in shipping...
I have been made aware of a couple more men's bikes in the last week or so. The first one showed up in some event pictures on the CABE from the Orange Circle ride in Orange, CA. I have no idea who the owner is or any other information on it. But it is definitely another White's Super Chief in...
These seats seem to be Troxel's. I have 4 of them total on Monark bikes. After checking out several Monark ads and catalog pages it appears they started using them in 1953 on many of their bikes, but the ads also show Lobdel seats still being used as well, so I guess they didn't switch vendors...
That is a very good question, that unfortunately I don't have the answer off the top of my head. I do know that I have 3 '53 Monarks that I believe are mostly original that all have the same seat. It is not the deep pan/single pan Lobdell Emory seat with the split crash rail that most of the...
