I do some fairly serious metal fab., myself. The repairs look good to me. Sleeving the fork, and plug welds would have been good, but as it is, still stronger than stock. Good save! Keep at it,,,,,
Thats solid, useful info., thanks. I like the looks of the old clamp on Phillips center pull, and, have heard different opinions regarding effectiveness. I want to run front only on 34 Humber road racer, fixed / free, flip flop. Correct(ish) vintage looks with reasonable stopping power, is...
Cyclo twin wire would be the most appropriate set-up. Huret svelto, while from the sixties, is another good option, for riding. Its small, looks old, but works better than the earlier stuff.
Seen some old advertising depicting the 30s Raleigh ladys "clubman" type bikes, but not many real world examples. The frame on this is so attractive! great bike!
This very nice Mac lean , was probably sold new in 1950, as frame set to be built up by owner. As such, components could likely include Lyotard pedals. Either the model 36 shown, or the 490D alloy rat traps. Both pedal types offered by Lyotard, basically unchanged, for decades! Mostly needs...
Hacksaw, files, and hammer, the basic tools for any metal fab. work! They work, and actually the use of hand tools can provide nicer fit and finish. Hating to wait,,,, another great reason for creative solutions. Thats always been a big one for me, why wait for somebody else to do work...
Thank you, for the detailed explaination, furnace brazing can, and has been done for centurys using open hearth methods. your joints look good, and I applaud your creative ,problem solving , approach. Very refreshing to see, many/ most people nowadays would never think of this, much less...
Absolutely love your building style, right on! Interested in knowing more about your "furnace brazing" process. Looks like you are using wood/charcoal fired heat source? I see some brass fittings, are those the brass filler material, and if so, what are you using for flux? Please explain...
Finished product looks great! I dig the way you worked through the project, problem solving, and testing/ improving your skills as you went. Using what you had on hand, improvising, etc. Great project, and inspiring! Whats next??
I think you have already made a start towards finding one! That is, letting other like minded people know what your looking for, and where your interests are. CABE wanted add might get a reply (with british accent?) that could get you going in the right direction! Never commonplace, these...
The bars on the BSA have very good placement front to rear. Try to get closer to that set-up with the bike thats causing you pain. The BSA looks great by the way!!
Nice! Looking forward to seeing this one come together,,,, And hey, it takes as long as it takes! I have looooong term projects going on too, and if anybody gives me a hard time I tell em, If ya cant wait ,donate!!
Frame might be Westfield. There were Indian frames made like that, probably Westfield built w/,(BSA) fittings. Fork probably changed? Bottom bracket definately BSA. Interesting,,,
Fantastic Red Devil, a great find! Thanks also to juvela, for the Phillips vitesse pedal info. Some pairs have slightly longer/shorter axle lengths, also some different end caps used throughout production. The thing I find interesting, is the infamous Raleigh 501 pedals apears to be a VERY...
Churchill Deluxe looks like a excellent project. Should clean-up/detail out very well! Add a nice leather saddle and go,,,, And I like the black Schwinn too!
Awesome grail bike with super cool components everywhere! Handlebar stem LOOKS to me like 30s high end raleigh, (RRA, Golden Arrow), etc. Toe clips even earlier. Track bars. Great bike, love it,,,,
Very unique! Looks like the builders of this machine were influenced by the early british bikes. Cottered cranks, "headclip" sort of headset, even the seat stay to top tube fitting connection , very simillar. 40 X 32 spoke count etc., all very english. Gotta love the bars, and fantastic...
3-speeder, If you take the same approach with this, as with the Humbers, you will be rewarded! Yes its got some "oxidation", but you could always upgrade some of the plated bits later, with better used parts, as you go, or as you find them. Keep going!!!
Nice work 3-speeder!, I have owned many examples of vintage british machinery. Bikes, cars , motorcycles, etc., and always felt they looked even better with some, "use". Adds to the charm, and they wear it well! Of couse, who doesnt appreciate a great original condition, but I prefer...
Great bike! Love the story of how it came to be. That's the stuff that gives (some) two wheeled machines their spirituality! What about knurling the seatpost? Could give the little more OD needed, plus ,,more love,,,,!
The blue frame looks to me like the road/track frame that westfield/columbia produced for many years. I think those had all 1" main frame tubes, and would have the shallow counterbore for the seatpost "shim", or "duster" as it's called. The fork was probably changed, and the fender cross brace...
I like it even more now ! Old track frames sure get a beating. Your description of the frame resurrection , parts sourced, etc, those are the things that gives the bike it's spirituality! My opinion, Your mileage may vary!!
That's a BSA chainring. Typical and correct track bike gear. Needs saddle and more research for sure. Yes, screw in oil port goes there, not grease! Chatter Lea track pedals are top shelf. Rims might be wrong(?), Again, research is the key to everything. Starting price doesn't seem to far...
Some of the Shuresta XTP jiffy stands did in fact have a adjustable telescopic inner piece. The outer tube is slotted with the inner section having a set screw to secure @ proper length. I don't care for side stands myself, never use em' and would remove it immediately! Rather have a chewed...
Lucky "7",style seat pin is certainly pre war. Could be original , if 26.4 mm(?) hercules frame size. Fork not drilled for caliper brake. Interesting bike, better/more pictures would be good! Many bicycles shipped from England to USA during 1939-40. Helped offset cost of food and war...
These look like Brompton ( England) pedals, but are not. Actually these are made by a company called JRC (Belgium). I have two sets of these exact pedals, and another similar set. The similar set has the same end caps as these , but clearly marked JRC Belgium. A pair exactly as shown ...
Check on classic lightweights UK. This should probably be brazed in, there is information about these and repair installation on their site. Yours looks to have been ground on in attempt to make the goop stick, and, that ain't gonna work, sorry! It's definitely fixable, and these do pop up...
Nice project. OG paint, looking very solid indeed. Really dig the rustic bentwood rocker next to the midcentury mod looking chair! Big fan of mixing like that, tho the real old stuff is still my fav! Great style ,,, keep going,,,
Such very attractive lines. Especially for a TOC lady's mount! Just needs the right , era appropriate, drop bars for that 19th century liberated lady scorcher to grab! Even looks light,,Nice!
Looks great ! With your skills, fabricating a rear fender , from a repro stingray piece, would be no problem at all! Lots of cool bike projects available, mayby build another?? Thanks for documenting the build!
Look at the 19" and 21" tank model motobike cover art again. The 19" model is simply much better looking! And thats what its all about,,,,,getting the prospective buyer to LOOK. Frame size comes later,,,,,Right?
This is the road racer model. Columbia/ Westfield produced for many years. Most of these sport steel rims, but wood rims were optional, and correct. Came with fixed gear as shown, coaster rear hub was another (low cost) option. Lightweight steel frames were drilled for fenders, and those...
Very nice indeed! Are the crank arms 7 inch, or, the "optional" 6 1/2" (CTC) parts?? If the latter , I would most definately assume racer. Yes, the silver needs to go, and the correct bars would be nice, but I cant say anything terribly bad about the current wheelset. Looks very road...
Looks great so far! Uncovering, (recovering?) original paint must have required much patience. Well worth the effort indeed. Stay patient, and keep doing what your doing! Awesome reward will be your Dads H-D, fully saved!! Right On, cant get much better than that!! Walter
