The lens is held in place by two tabs on the housing. The lens is slotted and the grove is longer so the lens can be turned to light the tail light. See attached photos for further explanation. Hope this helps.
My second and "Last" Reproduction Cushion Stem for Elgin "Miss America" and others is looking for a new home. Photos with green background are after return from Precision Chrome Shop in Quincy Illinois. The other ones are before chrome. I do not have any bicycles to put it on so I am looking for...
Press that I had made to form Washers, I had washer blanks cut by liquid cutter as hardware store washers are hardened and crack when you try to form them.
See earlier photos on how I drilled the end for handle bar, used torch to bend steel. I had mill work done only on area where rubber cushions go. I filed all by hand using a resin copy of a original for pattern.
I finally finished it and got it back from Chrome Shop (Precision Plating of Quincy, Inc. Quincy, Illinois). See previous post for details of construction. Many many hours time and many worn out files to complete project first started in December 2013!
Elgin "Miss America" Cushion Stem. This is the second one I have made from steel bar stock. Much more hand filing than machine work, ready for chrome. I don't even have a bike for it!
Sale Bill for Sale of Mervil Newlan's Bicycle Collection. Also not listed will be many parts and accessories that it is estimated would fill over six (6) heaping pick up truck loads. Mervil had a house and three large garages full of vintage bicycles plus parts and accessories. Illinois auctions...

Me on my brand new 1948 Schwinn 24" BOCX on Christmas day 1948, It came equipped with Bendix coaster brake, S2 rims,1/2" pitch chain, Lobdell saddle with compression springs, Coke Bottle grips and...
I researched everywhere I could for several years to find a working/usable tail light for the Miss America I was restoring and all I could find was very poor parts and no complete units. Here are some photos of what I found and the solution that I came up with.
This is a tribute to Eddy Simmons whose legs were totally paralyzed but repaired bicycles in his own shop in the 1950s. He could not walk or even stand and did all of his work on a homemade padded mat/creeper. I do not know how he was able to get himself in his homemade three wheeler to get...
I didn't have a bike until I was over 9 years old but started out with a brand new Schwinn 24" DX (unequipped). I road that bike until I had to be careful not to hit the handlebars with my knees! I still had it in a stripped down condition up to the time I got my first car. I really do not know...
Anyone on here please correct me if I am wrong as I have never had a Westfield bike and got this information second handed but here is a photo of one difference.
The question about Embosed "Elgin" or not on Skirt. I have restored two different "Miss America" Elgins, both were definitely mfg. by Murray, both were complete, original and not modified over the years, the second one had been repainted with a brush but was all there.
The first had a Finned...
It took me many years to gather this information. It seems that the material used in lens was not stable and even NOS parts found on the shelves also went bad.
I hope this will help.
Mike Burden, Lima Ohio made the lens that I used. It was a screw-on type of the correct outside appearance. I had to cut the threads out by hand and then cut slots for locking tabs. I did not like the looks of the small screws that held the bulb housing but that is the way that the factory did...
I hope you have better luck than I had as looked for eleven years before I found what is in the upper portion of photo, the center pics were found on the web, the new one is the one I made for my Ellgin Miss America ( the one you show photo of). I made internals to use LED bulbs and a...

I have had these Grips for several years stored in the dark! They have "Elgin" imprinted on them, I think I got them from Fox Grips. Check eBay item number: 253554121451
Just an update on our 1941 "Girls' Finest De Lux Equipped Elgin". We took it to Ann Arbor and came away with "Classic, Best Restored Bike of the Year". Also while in Michigan we went by The Gilmore Auto Museum and they let us photograph it with a vintage 1937 La Salle as a backdrop! If you have...
There are Bikes out there that their condition is well past "Patina" (maybe brush painted that destroyed the originality) and are only good for scrap or be cannibalized for parts. That is the ones I like to bring back to as new as possible. It is hard not to over restore if you do not keep in...
The info above is from my postings, If anyone has any questions about these batteries just get back to me. It does take a little time but the end result is very worth it. Also as stated in my posting of this, I will make a label (sleeve) for one if you request.
Thanks,
Eldon
I am looking for the Elgin Parts List that has the specific models as listed on picture of cover I posted. Would like photos of all pages of this parts list that must include model # 502-173 (Murray).
Looking for original but would be grateful for detailed scanned copy that I could make up a book.
Just found old photo of my brother's 1948 24" DX with "updates"! This was taken in 1953 after the new had worn off. This is about as close to a muscle bike as a poor boy could come up with in those days .
