Early 1946 balloon tire Compax Sports Traveler. Built in a similar style to the early Columbia lightweight Sports Travelers with the forward mounted coupling in the middle of the frame and the wraparound joints on the head tube and the seat tube. First balloon tire design for the Compax after...
Facebook is like any tool. Use it responsibly and you'll be fine. Nobody says you have to give all of your information to them. The only information they have about me is all of you freaks i friend :).
I'm late to this party but 505 was the code for Monark. So yeah, by this time it was Huffy. Weird that they were still using the 505 code. 507 was the code for Huffy.
The way I get a lot of hot water to fill a kiddie pool is to attach all of my garden hoses end to end (about 5 or 6) and coil them up on the lawn out in the sun on a hot summer day. If you've ever tried to drink out of a garden hose laying out on a lawn as a kid, you know how hot that water can...
If you can, try to thread them on a New Departure hub. If they fit, they're New Departure, if not, they're Bendix/Morrow. New Departure sprockets will thread onto Bendix/Morrow hubs but not vice versa.
The only way I've found to remove that type of paint is to mechanically remove it. Strippers don't seem to work on it. But you could try lacquer thinner or paint stripper for the specific paint you've got. I usually use a brass wire wheel to remove this type of paint.
So here's a thought. If you absolutely knew the day your bike rolled off the line, would it cause you more or less satisfaction with it? I think it's fun to try to find out the history of these bikes, but at the end of the day, it's the bikes I like, not worrying about the exact day they were...
Just an FYI, that tank won't fit a king size frame. You might be able to jerryrig it in there but it won't be an exact fit like a normal cantilever frame.
Sorry, I feel like I dumped on your thread with my bikes. I have seen several Hornets in the Lime/Black color scheme around and I believe that this color kind of "bled" over into the Hornet line too. Of course that is just speculation. The serial for this bike has the following dates...
That's OK, I don't know how I missed the two other possible Starlet dates. It's tough to keep all of them straight! Thanks and even though I don't ride them much I do enjoy looking at them. They're currently living in my dining room :).
Let's review the possible dates for the serials for my bikes. I missed a couple for the Starlet so I've added them here:
Chartreuse 26" Streamliner - L48696 - 06/23 to 06/28 of 1954 or 08/04 to 08/08 of 1956
Chartreuse 26" Starlet - C27898 - 05/22 to 05/29 of 1952 or 10/23 to 10/30 of 1953 or...
Not sure why you're including this thread in your weekly rant about the Cabe being not being fun anymore, but some of us are clearly enjoying it, including me :).
I would think they would be from the 1954 model year as your catalog scans suggest. I see there are serials for 1957 for both, just wondering why you think 1957?
I have that reaction to colors others like. We saw a salmon painted car on the road yesterday and I expressed to my girlfriend my revulsion of it :). But some people love those salmon colored Monarks. I like the chartreuse color, I don't know why. To each their own.
I never really thought about how rare the color was, I just really liked it. I also had a girls green chartreuse Monark Super Deluxe that I loved. I guess I should tell the short story about how I got these 3.
Back in the early 90's I met my good bike friend Israel Gonzalez in Chicago. He...
Yes thanks to @Schwinn Sales West for his perspective on this, the safety logic seems like a very possible scenario. And thank you AS-1 for poring through the literature and pulling out the color gems. You've solved some questions that have vexed me since the 90's when I first acquired the...
Awesome. I think you just cleared up the ambiguity of duplicated serial numbers on my Streamliner and Wasp. Most likely would be the late 53 and 54 dates. Thanks for sharing this.
Here are mine:
Chartreuse 26" Streamliner - L48696 - 06/23 to 06/28 of 1954 or 08/04 to 08/08 of 1956
Chartreuse 26" Starlet - C27898 - 10/23 to 10/30 of 1953
Chartreuse 26" Boys Wasp - C85728 - 11/13 to 11/25 of 1953 or 05/23 of 1957
This reminds me of David Lettermans old bit. If you aren't totally satisfied with the show, remember one thing..... what did you pay for the ticket? (for those that don't know, it's the same price as this swap)
I've been fortunate enough to have never had any bikes I care about stolen and I am grateful for that. Thinking about all the bikes I have sold, I have no regrets about them other than I sold them too cheap :).
