I was adjusting the seat on this '41 and noticed this.................

It looks like that tube cracked because it was hard and brittle, which can happen when you weld high carbon steel, but mild steel isn't supposed to have enough carbon to get hard. I can't even guess.
 
All bikes can develop problems if abused properly! I would not say this is typical though like with post war Monarks breaking at the bottom bracket. Just my observations. V/r Shawn
 
any guesses as to if the tube is cracked, or if the tube has cracked loose from the brazing? and....is this repairable?
 
I think it's the crap paint that's on it.... no way did that crack the metal on the top part of post. ... I think the layers of paint and whatever else is under there is all that is cracked since that is a high area of twist and stress
