I got a schwinn stingray in bare metal ready to shoot color.....going with candy red and i know that there was a metallic base and after is the candy red....question i have is were those paint jobs clear coated? id like to get close to factory look....let me know.

Starting around 1964 Schwinn deleted the red oxide primer on the candy colors and just used what they called an Aluminum undercoat. It was the primer and the base for the candy. No metallic paint or base coats were used.

No they were not. The red tint color used back at the time was a finish coat - which explains a
lot about why they faded away to silver over time.

I've got a couple of older red bikes and the color comes up on the rag when you try to wax them. If they were cleared, no color would come up.
