Colson help needed

-

ranman

Wore out three sets of tires already!
Recently purchased a Colson. The fenders are supposed to be right and I was told it was a 37. Looking for some help on trying to identify the year/model etc. I have got some great information so far but have come to the cabe to see if there is any other input or ideas. So I will tell you what I know and then have at it....please! The serial number on the bottom of the crank is 4162 FCC. Under the 4 is a G1. The original paint was blue. There was no head badge on it but the holes are horizontal - and very huge in diameter. Yep thats about it!
I have cleaned the fork and frame and wiped it down with boiled linseed oil and so yes I know the forks don't go that way. I have washed the rags and rinsed out the bowl of linseed oil. I have included a pic of the front fender on the floor the rear fender is soaking in oxylic bath.
Any thoughts? Thanks.
Randy

G1 means July 41 to me and on the back of the Colson book there are two badge with holes like that, Bluegrass Hardware and Goodyear badge may have mounted that way. I am NOT an expert. Rick

Thanks Adam and rickyd. Looking for a head badge. Holes are horizontal, 2 7/16" from center of hoe to center of hole. So I guess I will begin with Bluegrass Hardware and Goodyear - thanks again!

Can't tell on my phone, but the fenders should be peaked, sprocket is hawthorne, should be a, dunno what the technical description is, but I call them paisley.

Not an "expert," but I've had many colsons. The goodyear ones I had, had a "G" stamped under the headbadge.

Deluxe models had a regular kickstand, tank, and half inch chain, unequipped had the skiptooth, dropstand.

Those are my favorite frames. Love the looptail.

Yep the fenders are not peaked so wrong as well. Mine has an F stamped so Firestone Cruiser. Thanks to Nick - I would still be looking up a bunch of this info.

The correct fenders are not peaked. But has curved braces.

The deluxe models like the clipper had the curved braces, some had peaked fenders, some had roundy ones. I think the goodyear and firestone models had peaked.

I've had original fenders with the struts riveted together as a single, two strut unit, riveted to the fenders.

Hard to tell what's original or not, as there's no definite serial number list.

Colsons had a lot of discrepancies with serial numbers. I've had complete bikes that don't conform to the lists "experts" have put together.

So, your only option, in my opinion, is to put it together as is and enjoy it, or look at pictures of original bikes, spend a ton of money buying original parts, and make it "correct" for more money than it's worth. :)

Agreed. First intent was to clean it up and ride it - I think that is what I will do!
