Once again it is time to post a few guidelines for new bike collectors, especially for those
living with mom and dad, married or those that have a companion.

#1 Never bring them with you to a show or swap. If you buy something that will be shipped to you always destroy or hide the receipt. Most importantly never divulge what you pay for anything.....if you do get cornered..................LIE.

#2 Do not be in a hurry to bring your treasures in when returning home from a swap.
Always bring in some small insignificant items.
Leave the "big" purchases on the truck or secluded in the van until they can be filtered into your collection under cover of darkness.

#3 When asked about the show or swap say something like: "It was OK , saw all the guys there, remember me telling you about old Charlie "? "His wife died, Hey what's for dinner , I am starved!"...... ALWAYS change the subject......... And LIE.. It is OK to lie about your bike purchases, in fact it is a requirement to become a CABE member.
If the question of the swap comes up over dinner quickly say something like : "Hey this chow is great hon[even if it tastes like crap] too bad about Charlie's wife, I guess she fell off the roof or something" REMEMBER: ALWAYS CHANGE THE SUBJECT!

Wait until she is away or asleep to bring everything in. Blend your new found stuff in with what you have.

I have posted these "rules" before and there is always someone who replies" Well I don't have to do that with my wife,ha. ha. She don't care what I buy or spend"
All I can say to this is you are very lucky and I am happy for you. Let's hope you never become divorced.....

I followed those rules for 26 years (btw other hobbies have the same rules) and for the last 11 years I haven't needed to use the rule book, which is wonderful.

I've found that if you're married its also a good idea to sound proof the room you use to tinker on your bikes. That way you won't have to listen to her complain that all the noise you were making was distracting her while she was screwing other dudes.

Problem with my wife is...she knows better. I've tried hiding my picks....she's always found them.
Besides I've learned to not look in her eyes when I try to hide something....lie....well were still married after about 6 years of me looking at bike porn.

But Tink, it's good to help the newbies out where we can. Thanks for the tips.

It's all about the Rescue / Revival and of course the Tanklights!!

How did I run out of room so fast?

I must be the only lucky guy on the site. None of Tinkers rules apply to me.I have always bought what I wanted. My wife also looks for bike and other of my hobbies related items.Get a new wife ,girlfriend ,etc. if you have to suffer to have a hobby. I would also add that a beginner should buy quality NOT quantity.

I would also add that a beginner should buy quality NOT quantity.

A long time ago, before I joined the CABE, I had many junk POS bicycles that weren't worth a second look. Over 10 years since starting this hobby and I've found my calling for the last 5 years.
