A Proper Stem for an old veteran

-

Schwinny

I live for the CABE
So I missed out on the Rivendell Bleriot.
Snooze you lose.
That was such a beautiful bike...

Isn't that pretty?
But...

I did get another that was my first choice, until I saw the Rivendell.
I still have an itch for two others in the crowd but I think I'll put my nose down on the beauty I brought home.
I'll post it when I have it fitted for my use.

One of the things that needs changed are the stem and bars. I have the bars but I'm looking for a period correct stem that is a correct style.

The year is 1950.
The bike is a handmade English Club type that was built to buyers spec. Any "better" stem was available for "fitment" when new.

I'm not super familiar with all the old styles and companies. Except SA, GB etc.
Requirements are;
  • Aluminum (durillium) or track type steel.
  • adjustable would be nice
  • 25.4 bar
  • longish quill, > than 5" but can make do with 5"
  • 70mm reach minimum
  • English or French. No Italian stuff.
  • nothing later than 1960
Hoping to tap into the deep knowledge base here. What stems were/are available?

More hints on the bike....
4 speed
531

Thanks for the help !!

Duralumin ....(durillium)

That Rivendell in the photo needs to have the rear brake cable hanger directed downward just a bit more ....it's 'cocked' just a bit too much upward ....rear brake inner wire is not at an optimal angle as pictured

'Details' like that can make a difference ....if I owned that particular bicycle, that would be one of the first things I would take care of

you do not mention the centre diameter of the bar you intend to employ

would guess it is perhaps 25.4 but readers would need to know a specific size in order to make useful suggestions

in addition to GB Hiduminium another period correct Brit dural stem would be the Reynolds

they did some with a distinctive double binder you might like the look of...

Yes, that's correct 25.4 bar size.
Added to the list.
... Aaaand that Reynolds dual binder is neat.
Very nice. It would be par for the course on this bike.
I'll bet they are like a hens molar.

might be ... me knowledge o' the Brit vintage parts market be nil

was thinking more along the lines of a Nr. 17 incisor but we be on the same page...

member @dnc1 is likely to be able to make suggestion; both for other options and for places to look

one easy access venue to make exploration might be gumtree

Rivendell bikes are desirable, though an off-topic way to OP your own thread (USA-made Waterford frame, Japanese equipped - Nitto, Shimano, Sugino, DiaCompe)
We'd like to see the club racer in question.
Honestly, I'm surprised @juvela hasn't offered catalog pages of period stems.

My show and tell isn't quite so old but remains one of the prettiest stems ever made, GB Duralumin.

Im now ruined for Stems.
I will keep the one that is on the bike in place until I find one like the one pictured in hand above in Juvela's Post.
Now that I know they exist, Clip style Alum.
