Does re-plating a part make it weaker?

Yup, it's got several stages to that crack. The top photo, right side, at seven o'clock was the final part that cracked and left you in the street.
Automotive cranks break the same way.

At least that's my opinion, Thanks for the photo follow up.

that's a lot of RPM's!
1960 "all steel" street Bug, 275 HP dyno'd at the crank, plus another 80 horse shot of NOS. 2386 cc's, IDA Weber's bored to 52.5mm.

Weight 1600#, best ET 10.86 at 133 MPH quarter mile. Normally raced in a 11.60 index class. Bug In quick 16 winner, and a NHRA Wally winner. Lots of parts donated to the God's of Speed over almost 19 years.
