Making the most of the weekend. We hooked up with a few friends to ride our vintage bikes on Saturday. It's been our annual trip to the area the last few years, particularly Huntington Beach/Newport Beach, and to attend the CycloneCoaster Swap and Ride the next day. And every year we do this, we have so much fun. Thank you our friends Cliff @OC54 and Marianne, Frank @cyclonecoaster.com, Marty @cyclingday, Mark @tripple3, and David @Marcheesy for making this "Day Before CycloneCoaster Swap and Ride" a memorable one. We loved hanging out with all of you.

Drove through the night arriving in Huntington Beach Saturday early morning

I knew Mark @tripple3 was coming, because we heard him. :) On his way to the tower and back.

This is part of the day where we enjoy catching up with everyone; it's been a few months since we have personally last seen each other. Throughout the day, hearing the stories and learning about the small details and history of these old bikes, is one of the things I enjoy most. And we have one of the best story tellers in the hobby with Marty @cyclingday.

A couple of super nice examples of original condition Schwinn Double curved Bar Roadsters. This one belongs to Frank @cyclonecoaster.com...

IMG_3325.jpg

...and this second one belongs to David @Marcheesy. I asked him too to please don't park your minty Schwinn DcBR next to our crusty Schwinn DcBR. Kidding aside, both David and Frank's version are extremely nice.

Thanks to Cliff @OC54 for letting me ride this hot rod. So cool.

Lunch at Chihuahua Cerveza...

...restaurant was a huge hit among all of us. Thanks to Frank for the recommendation. So good, we came back that same evening to watch game 7 of the World Series. A nerve racking extra inning improbable win, and to watch along with other Dodger fans, so much fun. And to have Ted @tryder join us for dinner too, made our evening that much better.

Heading back to Huntington Beach

This is the reason we will do this again next year. Thank you again for the hospitality of @cyclonecoaster.com, @cyclingday, @Marcheesy, @tripple3, and @OC54 with Marianne, our SoCal friends. We love coming down because of days like this.

Met up with @Eddie_Boy and @unclemoo this past Saturday to pick up this beauty… 1940 CWC Western Flyer.
I purchased my first prewar bike from him. Now, it was only right that my wife’s first prewar is from him as well.
Thank you Eddie!
You're welcome brother @Mel_e_Mel. You and your wife enjoy this pretty gal; that blue is one of our favorites, and why we got her in the first place. She definitely wasn't easy to let go, but I know she's going to a very good home.

Our Epic vintage bike ride: Bay Trail to Bay Bridge to Treasure Island

My friend Edwin and I were talking about doing a ride to start off the New Year. Wanted to do something new, well for my wife and me at least. Ever since the East portion of the Bay bridge was completed, we've talked about walking or riding the Bay Bridge. We see pedestrians and bike riders every time we cross the bridge, thinking what a cool experience and views that would be. Might as well ride into Treasure Island, and so that's what we did. Hooked up with Brother Mel @Mel_e_Mel, brother Armando, @unclemoo, my friend Oscar, a local Richmond resident and bicycle enthusiast, Edwin, also from the area in Pinole, and Mercedes and I met up in Richmond at Point Isabel Regional Shoreline and rode to Treasure Island and back.

The weather conditions, though cool at first, warmed up comfortably with clear blue skies, and to our surprise, barely a breeze. The entire bay was spectacular all around, the whole day actually. Just shy of 30 miles total, wasn't an easy ride by any means, but definitely a rewarding one at that.

Finally for the first time, we rode the new Bay Bridge. From the eastern edge of the new bridge to Yerba Buena island, 2.2 miles of gradual grade made it a bit of a challenge on our balloon bikes, but what an experience. The views were spectacular.

A family on vacation checking out our old bikes. They loved brother Mel's Schwinn DcBR, because she has a Klaxon horn. They got a kick out of it.

My wife gearing up for the upcoming hill ahead. The most challenging, physically, on this day was our trek up that steep hill you see on the upper left hand corner of this image...

IMG_4214.jpg

...and here's a view of this hill. My wife quoted, "It was like climbing a ladder." No joke...it was so steep. I had to make sure the bike wasn't sliding down as I was setting the kickstand. My bike started to roll down. Yikes.

Next: Our return back

Our return back to Point Isabel Regional Shoreline

IMG_4215not.jpg

This was the most rewarding part of today's ride. Once we were back on the Bay Bridge trail, it was literally coasting all the way down, no pedaling required. Like my granddaughter would say, "Weeeeeeeeee." So fun.

IMG_4222.jpg

During the return ride back, Oscar took us on a different route along Berkeley's Aquatic Park.

We love that the entire area has bike paths every where.

After the ride, as a reward, shared a large Pepperoni pizza at Costco, and rode back to Point Isabel to watch the sunset. What better way to end the day, an epic day for my wife and me.

IMG_4236c.jpg

I'd like to thank my good friend Edwin for hosting and sharing some of his images from the day. We've talked about this ride, and we finally got to do it. Such a rewarding ride, we will do this again.

IMG_4236d.jpg

And thank you Oscar for the VIP treatment, showing us areas we've never seen before.
