To shape the leather all you have to do is soak it in warm water, secure the leather on the saddle and let it dry?

I’ve experimented with saddles before and it’s never that easy.

I’ll have to buy my leather, any suggestions on what kind?
 
This was the first time that I have tried shaping leather this way so I really don't have enough experience to offer advice. My only advice would be to research forming leather on the internet to get a feel for how more knowledgable people do it. I can say that wetting it made it easier to stretch into shape.

The leather that I have used has always come from cutting up thrift store coats and in this case I used leather from an old leather sofa!
