My Three Sons on a Flamboyant Lime J38

Here are a few recent photos of my Nov. 1, 1963 Flamboyant Lime showing up-close detail pics of a few ‘63 related components. This bike has that deep Lime Glow to it, as it no doubt was well taken care of by the Original Owner. All the OEM hardware (bolts, nuts, washers and rims) are very nice...

Correct derailleur for Fast Back 5 Speed

Shawn, Not that it matters, unless someone is doing a correct nut/bolt 5 Speed. There are a few differences in the derailleur used from ‘66 - ‘73. The ‘66 Fastbacks used the Sprint unit with smooth wheels. The “Schwinn“ unit continued to use the smooth wheels into 1970 and maybe beyond. The...

    1964 Flamboyant Lime wall art.

I’d say mid to late ‘64 Lime. 28 spoke rear wheel and later style upper bearing set.

    1964 Flamboyant Lime wall art.

Good morning guys, This heavy patina ‘64 Lime is NFS, and represents a Schwinn model that’s not even a year old yet. It’s the only Stingray I have in this kind of rough shape and offers up an example of how many of them ended up. Eventually I would like to find a correct matching set of...

    1964 Flamboyant Lime wall art.

This bike went from someone’s barn to my shed about 20 years ago and I just pulled it out for some photos. Rode hard and poor storage resulted in the condition of this Lime J39 Deluxe. The lime bikes get creepy rust very easy and this ‘64 has plenty. This April 15, 1964 would have looked...

How Can You Tell an Original Stingray Chain Ring from a Repro?

Here are a couple NOS Lucky 7 front sprockets (56 104 / 6306) that came on the Stingray. There are No stampings, the small hole has a very slight oval to it and the chrome is smooth and shiny. 36 tooth - 1/2’’ pitch.

    1966 Coppertone Deluxe Stik-Shift

All that Glitters is gold. Glitter grips to add more color appeal to the New ‘66 “Stick-Shift“ J38 / J39 series models.

    63 stingray

The correct rear reflector for the ‘63 and ‘64 J38 Standard is the Stimsonite (2 pie) that measures 1-3/4’’. My Red ‘63 and Lime ‘63 are shown below with their small 2 pie. The larger Stimsonite (2 pie) at 3-1/4’’ would have come on the Deluxe models in ‘63-‘64. Starting in 1965, all Standard...

    Fastbacks: Bow Pedal style change

GT, I’m trying to draw on my memory of many Stingray related items from years past. I used to know quite a bit, but have been away from the hobby for years. You have jogged my memory and I do recall the rare one year bow pedal. Something about stars. I took photos the other day of some of my...

    Fastbacks: Bow Pedal style change

My thoughts on the Bow Pedal styles from the Original Stingrays I’ve owned in the past and the ones I currently have. 1) The Large caps with single arrows were used on the 1964 and 1965 Super Deluxe Stingrays. 2) The Small caps with the single arrow were used on the 1966 Super Deluxe and...

    NOS Ful-Floating Stingray-Ray Seat

I had a member ask me about the instruction sheet for mounting the Ful-Floating seats on an early wingtip Stingray. Here ya go, just in case others are curious.

63 Deluxe Stingray Coppertone - new to me

indycycling, Nice ‘63, I love the short frames. What is the date on this Deluxe? I think that rear fender may be the Long version from your photos. All late ‘63 Deluxe, all of ‘64 and into very late ‘65 used the Short Razor edge fender on the Deluxe model. Measuring from tip to rivets is...

1964 Color change on Stingrays ….. almost Black

While reuniting with my Stingray collection, parts, Schwinn Reporters and numerous other documents I’ve accumulated over the years I found a couple letters I’d forgotten about. The bright yellow / green Schwinn Newsflash of 3/25/64 talks of a color change being made for the remainder of the ‘64...

    1964 Opal Violet Super Deluxe

I’m still digging through my old stash of information and advertisements from yesteryear and came upon a Sports Illustrated magazine. This (Dec. 7, 1964) issue has a cool one page ad for Schwinn bicycles showing a Violet J37-6 Super Deluxe. It looks like a 36 spoke rear wheel in this photo...
