    Lime 1963 Schwinn Sierra

GT, I think you could be right… my bike might have been stamped on that day, but probably was built-up later on. Ugh, massive screwup on the chain ring… I do have Huret. I have had my 66 varsity on my mind, which has the Sprint chain rings. Nevertheless, I still have a mix of mostly 63 parts...

    Lime 1963 Schwinn Sierra

Sounds like a plan. Be careful on the FD clean-up as the chrome on those Huret FD's is very fragile and might flake off. I would not use any type of abrasive material... not even steel wool. Maybe just soapy dawn diswash soap and your fingers.

    Lime 1963 Schwinn Sierra

You have a beautiful Sierra. Great shape and love the lime! Great to see you have the original Lycett saddle too. Your original FD looks like it's in pretty good shape. I have several, and only one looks that good. If I were you, I would not swap it out for the shiny new one. But if you are...

    Schwinn Sprint freewheel removal

I have also removed a freewheel exactly how you describe above. It definitely works and prevents from stripping the 2-prong base. The downfall is, as you described, ball bearings fall out. You are also stuck with the task of re-setting the pawl springs when reassembling the freewheel. It's not...

    Schwinn Sprint freewheel removal

Per the old Schwinn Repair Manuals, you can also try using a #8 easy-out screw extractor. Search the CABE and it will come up in various threads. Also can goggle it to find pictured instruction in the Schwinn manual circa 1970-ish. The extractor works, and it will prevent the pealing of the soft...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Yes, I have gone through those same headaches. I acquired a 63 Schwinn Sierra last winter. It was sitting outside at a farm for at least 20 years, maybe 30, or more. But it had all the original parts (even saddle, which I tried but could not save), so I went all-in on doing a full clean-up. To...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Thanks for the additional info... and thanks for the vintage part spec sheets. Very interesting (all of them). As I continue to tear-down, I’ll give updates when I can.

    JC Higgins 8 speed

I haven’t tried further to remove the freewheel, but I believe I have figured out the manufacturer… Moyne. Manufactured in France. I found a very similar 5-speed on VeloBase, and the same was for same on EBay last night. I read further on this forum about other techniques for freewheel removal…...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

I finally had the time to tear down the bike a little bit more. The below picture shows the source code / SN on the bottom bracket. The source code start with 503, though the 5 and 0 are very faint. It’s the same line-set of code numbers as HyperHal’s bike. My SN appears to be set prior to his...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

I I haven’t figured out the 3-prong vs 4-prong thing either. Per the Schwinn volume 2 service manual, they only discuss the adjustment of the pulley spring and that it should be adjusted give the chain max tension. Nothing regarding the number of prongs one might encounter.

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Thanks for the info! I will remove the rear wheel this week as I’m also interested in freewheel manufacturer… which spins nicely. Both front and rear wheels are a little wobbly, but surprising spin freely.

    1960 Schwinn Continental...with Suicide Shifter

What a beautiful Conti. I’ve been looking for one, and know of a tourist model I can purchase that’s in similar condition, but I‘d prefer the sport model like yours. Enjoy!!!

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Reviving this discussion as I found an old JC Higgins 8-speed over the weekend. This one has fenders, along with the original Austrian made “Assmann” leather saddle. The initial B&W photo appears to have a similar saddle. From checking VeloBase, this was an actual Austrian saddle manufacturer...

    Early 60’s 5-speed Atom 14t-28t Freewheel (2-notch removal)

Looking for an early 1960’s 5-speed Atom freewheel found on the 1962 & 1963 Schwinn Superiors, and the 1963 Schwinn Varsity, Continental, and Sierra. This freewheel had the 2-notch removal system, with a 14-15-18-22-28 tooth count. It would look similar to @GTs58 post...

    Early Schwinn alloy 27 x 1 1/4" road wheelset

Understandable regarding the cold. Unless you get back to me sooner, I’ll reach out again as we get closer to spring. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
