On Training Wheels
I am looking for information on who manufactured this Stutz bike. The serial number is all numbers no letter prefixes. The first four digits of the serial number looked stamped, and the others look like they were etched in later. The way the tubing is welded has me confused too. The lower drop out on the rear is different than anything I've seen. It looks extremely well built. The crank sprocket also has me puzzled because it is the only one I have seen like it yet, the only other one I have ever seen is off a 1930s aluminum race bike.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

From the newspaper articles below it looks like your Stutz Bicycle from Guarantee Bicycle Company is 1933 or newer. Prior to 1933, brothers Edwin and George Rehm owned Guaranty Cycle Company with six stores in St Louis selling Pierce, Stutz and Cardinal bicycles. They separated in 1933 with George's business continuing as Guaranty Cycle Stores and Edwin's new business called Guarantee Bicycle Company.

Looks very much like a 28” Colson lug frame motorbike; except for the rear fork ends, which appear even more modern Colsonesque. Replacement 26” wheels and 1/2” pitch drive train.

I believe that these lug frames may have undersized headsets and bottom brackets; so perhaps be careful with those parts; the bottom bracket does not appear to have the lug joints; so maybe it might be more standard.

I would place the bicycle right about 1933, when I believe that I have read that Colson had re-organized; and because of the mix of lug frame joints and non-lug frame joints, perhaps a transition from old to then new?

Thank you very much for posting this information. I've wondered for years why the Guaranty Cycle Company "Guaranty Badge" said "The original Guaranty cycle Company" on it.

I have a Guaranty and Stutz badge from the Guaranty Cycle Company, and a Cardinal and Stutz badge from the Guarantee Biycle Company. You've answered the question for me. Two brothers feuding over bicycle names. Pretty Cool! Barry
