To be clear,
The stem of the mushroom button has a slot around it, and the contact lever of the switch has a fork in the end of it that captures the mushroom button once it’s installed.
So, the mushroom button cannot be removed until the switch mechanism is slid back far enough to free the button from its grasp.
The only way to slide the switch back, is to drive the small pin out that holds it in place.
The pin can be seen, by removing the handle grip, and looking on the side of the handlebar.
There you’ll see a small 3/32” diameter rod/pin that passes all the way through the switch and through the other side of the handlebar.
You’ll have to drive the pin all the way out with a drift punch.
It’s easy to do, if you have the right size punch.
Once the pin is out, like Mark said above, you’ll need to fashion a small hook from a coat hanger wire, and then fish it around inside the handlebar, until you feel it snag the catch that’s built into the end of the switch.
Then pull back with a bit of a twist, and you should feel the switch mechanism break free.
Sometimes it helps to squirt some lubricant in there, since it’s been sitting there since 1938.
I’d pull it all the way out, before installing the new button, so that you can clean and inspect it, but that’s just me.
Reverse the process for installation.
Good luck!
😎
