Picked these two advertising pieces for Dayton Bicycles sometime after 1897. One features a woman racer. I don’t follow this era of ephemera so I didn’t realize they had women racers.

Picked these two advertising pieces for Dayton Bicycles sometime after 1897. One features a woman racer. I don’t follow this era of ephemera so I didn’t realize they had women racers.


Dottie Farnsworth was a top professional racer from Minneapolis. She died tragically in 1902 at age 35 from blood poisoning contracted as a result of a fall at a non-racing circus cycling event. While riding in the cycle dazzle her wheel ran off the top, and death resulted from injuries received in the fall. I have no idea what a cycle dazzle is, but it sounds exciting.
