Those old Raleighs ride great. I had one in the early 80's (cant recall which model) but it had the shifters at the tail end of the handlebars.
I got married in '84 and I bought my then-wife a Raleigh 10spd. It has those shifters. The bike shop said that was the last of the English-made Raleigh 10 spds. I still have the bike in the shed. The bone stock Competition GS I found was '80.

1984 was the end of it. By then most of the lower end bikes were already being made in Asia. Only the high end were still British made. Then the name was sold and even though they were still called Raleigh, the era was over.
