Finally riding a big boys bike
Clenched, split, however you refer to it, when were they phased out?
Are they useful in dating the year of manufacture of a frame?
 
Not all manufacturers used split bottom brackets so I'm not sure how useful they are in dating. National Cycle of Bay City used them all the way up to their last year of production 1916. Once Davis Sewing Machine purchased National in 1917 I'm not sure that Davis continued to use this feature on National badged Davis built bikes. However split bottom brackets were used by other manufacturers even in the 1930's and probably beyond.
