I need to remove the blotches of crusty rust that are bleeding through the paint on a set of S2 rims.
My goal is to dissolve/remove the brown crust but preserve the paint, pinstripes and bare metal spots with the best methods possible.
I’d finally like to clear-coat the rims to permanently seal...
I am finally making the time to build the wheels for my 1940 Dx “Bomber”.
I’ll be using a large flange Forebrake up front, and a late prewar Morrow coaster in the rear.
I’m using early postwar, painted S2 rims on both ends.
through all of the input I’ve received from Cabers, I will be...
Dizzle Problems,
You’re truly my hero of the day!
It appears that you read the dimensions that I posted, and recognized that I would need different spoke lengths for the front vs the rear hubs.
Granted, a Morrow rear coaster hub has a pretty standard spoke hole diameter distance across its...
Hail, all ye intrepid Cabers !
It has been some time since I last had to beg access to the “ All Things Schwinn “
brain trust ; yet here we are again.
I am building an all prewar Klunkenstein Bomber/ Hot Rod with all the good, tasty bits ( Excelsior badged 1940 DX )
However, I’m going to...

I will be using some ‘40’s era coke bottle grips for my current build. I suspect over the years they have become less “plump” as some of the volatile portion of their composition has dried out.
I am aware of all of the “hairspray/grip- glue/bar tape, type remedies.
Does anyone have an...
I’m looking for the accessory type with holes - like the one in the photo below
Please contact me via private message if you have one for sale.
Thanks !
I have lusted for some time, for an earlier fork for my ‘40 Schwinn Excelsior DX Bomber.
I don’t know what it is, but I just love the appearance of the earlier trust forks - with the forward facing stanchions/braces for the truss rods.
I’ve never actually seen one of these forks in real life...

As I am nearly ready to assemble my hot rod ‘40 DX Bomber, I’ve now managed to
create another impediment to forward progress.
Although the wheel set is destined to be very cool : prewar Morrow, porkchop, double butted stainless spokes ….
I’m now balking on my choice if rims.
Currently I have...
Thanks to the collective inputs of my fellow Cabers; I’ve been able to determine that my 1940 DX was a “Cusp model” with regard to paint schemes ( “spears” vs “ fireballs” ).
I’m going to go with Spears ! So quintessentially prewar….
The obvious follow up questions:
- Does anyone have...
I like the way you think Jeff54.
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
When people type “prewar Schwinn DX paint“ in the CABE search bar, in the future, your input will help guide people.
Thanks again, I’m grateful!
After many years of parts hunting, I’m now ready to assemble my 1940 , excelsior badged, DX.
I’ve been able to secure a painter with a lot of vintage bike experience.
The problem is that I have yet to be able to determine “Definitive” paint details for a 1940 DX frame.
Both internet picture...
I am building a front wheel using a Schwinn large flange, pork chop brake hub to a early post war S2 balloon rim.
Has anyone built one of these who can share the correct spoke length?
Wow, what a beautiful specimen!
Clearly the designers agonized over the overall line and form of the complete assembly. It doesn’t have that
“Engine slapped onto a bicycle” look at all.
Very lovely indeed!
Ok, thanks for the quick clarification though.
I’m going to pass on this one, because I’m looking to paint it without too much preparation
Thanks for reaching out !
Oooh… that’s a tough call with the picture at that distance.
Is it really badly pitted? Or would it be better described as surface rust?
Please let me know.
Thanks!
For those of you who are knowledgeable on the subject of prewar Morrow hub rebuilds:
I am using parts from two separate, late 1930’s early 1940’s Morrow hubs to build one good one.
It appears that I have enough good parts to complete one good hub; except for one part
I am in need of the...
I am happy to declare that I have finished sourcing the parts for, and building my gifted Schwinn large flange, pork chop, front brake hub!
I am now going to attempt to build my own wheel set for my killer 1940 DX project.
( using prewar drop center rims - 36 hole. )
The questions :

As I build my prewar DX Klunker project, I’m going to make one concession to my strict “only prewar” parts rule.
[ Using prewar Morrow rear brake, high flange “phone dial” front brake, all period correct bits with prewar drop center rims. ]
As a nod to my former flat track racing days, I’m...
I was hoping to find a Schwinn script high flange hub to mate to my ‘40 DX project.
Having grown impatient with the search for a Schwinn high flang hub, I’ve changed course with the unexpected acquisition of a Pork Chop/ High Flange front drum set up.
The problem is that the Pork Chop axle is...
Another question:
Your photos show that your hub uses “8”
Ball bearings per side. I received an axle kit which provided “9” bearings per side.
The bearings appear to be the correct size,
And they all fit just fine between the cones and races.
My question is: Is there any advantages to...
Dear Mr. ADReese,
Allow me the this opportunity to declare you to be a PRINCE !
No, wait … A KING among common men !
Well, certainly a damn swell guy !
Thanks so very much for such a quick and comprehensive array of photos. It really helps a great deal. Those pics answer a LOT of questions...
I know it’s asking a lot, but if you would be willing to photograph your Pork Chop/ Large Flange hib, disassembled, in an “exploded view”, it would be an enormous help, and answer a LOT of questions.
( Thank you in advance if you’re able to do that ! )
I would have to measure and get back to you.
However, it seems that you are seeking show quality chrome. If that's the case , I don't think these will work even if they are the correct bars, because the chrome is from the 1950's.
Let me know your thoughts.
So a very, very generous new acquaintance
Just gifted me a stripped high flange (phone dial ) pork chop hub for my ‘40 DX build; Only the empty hub with the pressed in races.
But it’s a nice one though; and that price 😀👍 !
I was initially a bit crestfallen by the task of sourcing what was SURE...
Wow, thanks everyone. You’ve collectively spared my new adjusters from the indignation of being prematurely bodged.
( bloody things nearly cost a tank of gas !
Therein lies the sickness… )
I just installed two new repop rear axle adjustment bolts into my ‘40 DX project.
my question:
Is there a specific wrench or special tool to use on them? I don’t want to be “that guy” and immediately default to an adjustable wrench ( with the predictable ham-fisted looking results ).
If...
