Anyone doing nickel plating
In Texas, I would highly recommend Atlas Plating. They do all sorts of plating to include bright and semi-bright nickel. Prices are very reasonable. http://www.atlaschrome.com/services.html -

The Pinion Gearbox seems to be less efficient as compared to derailleur gears and Rohloff Hubs. The Pinion has additional frictional losses when compared to other drivetrains. What to look for on a Schwinn DX
1939 Schwinn DX has the straight down tube and the stand mounts on the dropouts. The 1940-1941 DXs have the curved down tube and no stand mounts on the dropouts. The serial number is located under the bottom bracket and starts with a letter followed by numbers. The DXs I own have 5 digits...- rbertjr

BicycleDesigner.com does have a kit which includes the aluminum bracket and the disk brake/rotor. Below is the whole bike. I took it to a modern Klunker extreme with front/rear discs, carbon fiber fork, Renthal stem/handlebars/kevlar grips, Schmidt headlight/dynamo hub, custom stem lock...- rbertjr

I have installed the aluminum one on a 1939 Schwinn DX frame. I had to widen the distance between the chain stays to accommodate the adapter as well as an 8-speed internal gear hub. In addition, I had to make a shim made from aircraft aluminum to line up the disc. Once all bolted together...- rbertjr

new to me schwinn dx
Like everyone else stated, a 1939 DX. Very nice bike! But I think the original headlight was a front loaded torpedo light such as the Delta, not a top loaded unit. Also, I do not think those type of pedals came originally on that bike. It would be interesting to see if the crank is dated...- rbertjr

SHELBY frame wz mounts.
Are you sure it's a Shelby frame? It looks like a 1940 Schwinn DX frame, especially with the serial number, the shape of the frame, and the small bar on the down tube which is the bump stop for the springer fork.- rbertjr

Thanks. After I got it back from chrome plating, I kind of went in a different direction than intended. You're right, I am worried about damage; but it is a really comfortable and fun bike to ride.- rbertjr
