I found this vintage bicycle during a clean out. Does anyone know the model name and year of this Elgin? It’s very solid and seems complete.
Is there a serial number on the BB? Or maybe batteries in the headlight? The batteries used to have a 2 digit year code back then.- Scout Evans

Dumbfounded by serial number
A lot of them were Panasonic. I had a 76 Traveler that was Panasonic. Later they were made by Giant, easy way to tell them is the serial number that starts with a G. For Panasonic bikes that Schwinn sold, here's what I've found on the serial number web page: Le Tour and Super Le Tour models...- Scout Evans

Rollfast Swamp find
Rollfast bikes were made by Snyder. They also provided the same bikes to Montgomery Wards badged as Hawthornes. I'm a proud owner of a Snyder made Hawthorne. In the mid 70's, all the old Snyder manufacturing things were sold to Emory bikes of Jacksonville Florida. Yours is a 60's Rollfast.- Scout Evans

help with AMF bicycle please?
66 or 67 sounds about right, that chain ring was the AMF style about that time frame. The seat post has a collar on the frame, replacing the seat post that tightened like a handlebar post from the late 50's early 60's, so mid 60's or later sounds right. Schwinn D-12? Correct parts questions
Shows it to be Sept 1953 bike. The serial is the right size and everything to be authentic. Looks like the fender braces were also touched up with silver paint.- Scout Evans

I've been looking for another one like mine! That's it, except mine had a cantilever frame. Same color too, but mine had a layer of red paint over everything. That shows the chain wheel and chain that doesn't agree with the catalog.- Scout Evans

Schwinn D-12? Correct parts questions
My 53 Meteor was original but had the other style chain wheel, like the D-13 with a standard chain, although it doesn't show that way in the catalog. I think the catalogs may not have been exact, so your D-12 may have come with truss rods, or maybe ordered new with them added.- Scout Evans

Snyder Bikes Made in 1942
My Hawthorne is a 42 model. I've read where there was a halt to all but a couple bike makers, Huffman and Westfield, in early 42 because of the war effort. Paint it or leave it: '56 Corvette
I cleaned up that bike back in 2008, but no pics. But I was surprised by how well the chrome came back. It looked rusted through on the rims but they looked new after some wd40 and 0000 steel wool.- Scout Evans

Schwinn always had the best paint and chrome. I was asked to repaint a 64 American that looked worse than your Corvette. I dismantled it and cleaned/polished each part. Then followed that with a couple coats of paste wax. The owner thought it was repainted but it was the original Schwinn paint...- Scout Evans

Crazy & destructive bike stunts as a kid???
My younger brother and I welded up some parts to make a big bike. About 10 years ago. We just eyeballed it, but it was balanced like we knew what we were doing. So I found I could pull a wheelie and even ride with no hands. But the big 3" tires and forks were too heavy when I pulled it too high...- Scout Evans

Looking for advice on Wards Hawthorne project
With the Snyder springer and curved fender brace on the seat stays, I'll guess it's all Snyder. As for year, the serial number on the BB should show the year. My 42 Hawthorne (Snyder) looks like this, with the year digits reversed. (24EH)- Scout Evans

I'm not in favor of rat bikes!
Any old bike that is saved from scrap that isn't anywhere near original but can be fixed up to ride is fine. I don't ever endorse cutting up a good original, but many classic bare frames can easily be made into a decent rat. Most of the old stuff I got is free, so it's pretty bad off, seldomly...- Scout Evans

I see on the chart where it shows a CW stamp for 48. I stand corrected. I think CWC was consistent with the stampings. Maybe an early 46 model with the F serial number.- Scout Evans

I'm not in favor of rat bikes!
Any bike less than 100 years old needs to be ridden as a first priority. A restored or original classic just sitting for display is wrong. Same goes for a rat that is just for a conversion piece as it hangs in the garage. Whether it's a rat or restored takes a backseat to riding the thing.- Scout Evans

Is this authentic
I think mine was one of the last made before production was curtailed in 1942. There was no old paint on it when I got it unfortunately. This is a 42 Snyder Hawthorne, the bottom bracket has some blanks welded in under the serial number, maybe to use up all the scrap pieces as they wrapped up...- Scout Evans

Looking for info on my 1942 Snyder made Hawthorne
I was complaining about not finding any old bikes here in Oahu, when this bike showed up on CL advertised as a 1941 Hawthorne. There was no original paint left at all, even the fork tube was sandblasted. I only saw a little of green way on the inside of the BB. The serial number IDs it as 1942...- Scout Evans

Bent frame?
Unfortunately it is bent. Here's your bike, from the 64 catalog. Notice the angle of the seat tube and the head tube, they are have the same rake. Once the frame is bent, it will be weaker when bent back to the right position. Unless it's braced up somehow, it will bend again.- Scout Evans
