I am a huge proponent of whitewalls on all of my middleweights but these are newer Kendas with almost no wear, and I’m trying to keep on a tight budget so will likely keep the black walls….for now LOL!
started taking this one apart today, came apart easily and even had some relatively new looking grease in the bottom bracket! Will post pics as I clean/grease/polish. Seat, front rack, pedals on the way.

Found this old photo a while ago and it brought back so many memories. I bought it new in either '85 (I think). First swap was the one piece cranks for Sugino CT175 3 piece (which I see in this photo). I know i added an ACS Rotor and eventually swapped the Peregrine mags for Peregrine 48s but...
Yup, that's the seat i was thinking too but I'm not picky for this bike, any Red S middleweight seat would do, same with pedals, not looking for exact correct pedals, some some period correct ones that could be found on Schwinns (bows, waffle, whatever).
Back when I was heavy into collecting Schwinns (50-60's middleweights mostly) we lived down street from a coworker's dad. This was probably 15 years ago, or more. He is a super nice guy, one that is just always pleasant to talk with and welcoming. He thought my interest in the Schwinns was...
always been a fan of your MW's Bob, especially these Panthers. That '59 takes the cake for me, hands down! Something about those painted fenders with the white tips...gorgeous!
Jay
great bike! don't you wish they could all be found in that condition. Like coasterbrake I too love the manual 2speed and those fork mounted brakes are awesome too.
Jay
primo example Bob. I've always had a soft spot for a killer campus green - it's a great color. Still up in the air about if whitewalls would have made it pop more or not :)
Jay
They are great little bikes, pretty “deluxe” with the light and tank. My daughter, who I bought this for, is heading off to college this fall. Time flies…
1968 Schwinn Fiesta 20" tires kid's bike in excellent condition. I've owned it for roughly 12 years. Completely disassembled it at the time I got it, cleaned and greased everything. It's ready to ride or add to a collection. Plenty of pics showing the condition. The tires were purchased when...
As a heads up, I’m planning on ending this DOND auction tomorrow at 6pm eastern time. Right now badbob is the high offer so they’ll go to him (assuming he wants them still since the 24hr grace period has passed).
Thanks,
Jay
Tried to get better pics of the code stamps, there may be 2 dots in the upper left quadrant of the 3 circle, so maybe 2nd quarter of ‘68 and not 1st quarter. I would never guess this would matter to anyone but hey, to each his/her own.
Jay
Two (2) Schwinn Westwind whitewall 20 x 1-3/4 S7 tires dated to 1968 + Schwinn Approved tubes that hold air. These came on a 1968 20" Fiesta I bought several years ago. I removed them and installed new repro tires & new tubes and these have been sitting in my basement. No tears, blow-outs and...
These came off a 1968 girls 20" middleweight but I think they were also used on some of the StingRays. Hard to see in the pics the dots in the circles but these date to '68. They've got the Schwinn Approved tubes in them still too (hold air). I'm looking to sell them but have no clue what...
+1 on the Park PolyLube. Pricey but great stuff. Plus my buddy owns the bike shop and hooks me up with a discounted price 😉 excellent job on those wheels!!
That shop is less than 40 minutes from me. I think it's just called Main Street Cycle now. That's where I went several years ago to see the gold plated Schwinn.
Jay
nice haul! love the little 20" ballooner. first 2 dark maroon bikes would make a great nearly matching set for a wife and young daughter. The Flying Star is cool too.
Jim's love and dedication to his bikes was always notable to me, and back on the old forum he was super encouraging and knowledgeable to a newbie like me at the time. Jim, I know that was a tough one to sell but I'm stoked its in good hands. Good work on the clean up of the mechanicals...
I've owned a couple '59 Catalina bikes and have seen a couple more over the years. I've seen 2 types of front racks on these: the standard one used on most Schwinn middleweights or a Persons branded one. My white and blue one had the Persons, the red one had the more common one. The Persons...
congrats Bob! that's one of the coolest finds i can remember seeing in many years. So your only "corrections" were adding the S reflector, pumpkin light, and a shift cable? Would love more pics please.
I'd say it's legit too. I had a late Nov '57 stamped Corvette last summer (so likely sold in '58) and it had the same "baseball diamond" shifter as yours. What's the serial number on your '59?

I would not have paid $200 for that one unless you REALLY wanted the double straight bar frame, and is it's biggest plus. The rest appears to be pieced together with non-original parts, seat, pedals, rims, spokes. But if YOU like it then it really doesn't matter. Have fun with it!
jay
The Sturmey trigger shifter looks like the early models with the window to see the 3 gear settings. I thought those were used until '56, maybe '57 too?
Jay
this may be of help to you as well regarding proper adjustment of the indicator chain/cable tension.

i've had a few white bikes over the years and they are an exercise in patience to say the least. EVERYTHING shows, but i'd say your's is looking really good. Even faded, it's still a great bike and I would for sure keep in together. And I love the small STP stickers. I'd probably keep the...
nice 3 speed middleweight speedster! pedals, grips, seat are not original, and it appears the cable housings are replacements too (not a bad thing if the cables were shot). I love painted fender middleweights with the white tips. Also, i like the whitewalls...would have come with blackwalls...
$250 seems about right for me in my area too, given the missing pieces. Those dual headlights are hard to find and when you do they command big $$$
the bike looks like it's in good condition.
Nice score for $45! I've had a few 20" middleweights and have always liked the look of them. The design suits the smaller scale so well. I'm also a big Campus Green fan.
Jay
nice find! i've seen the "blueish" badge lettering on green bikes from this era quit often. I always thought they came from the factory that way but the sun fading theory may be the real reason. ??
slightly off topic, but if the red/white grips are Odi Mushroom grips from the mid 80's the could be worth a few $$. They were a BMX Freestyle thing....
Great Schwinn score!!!
great work as always Bob. not sure i recognized this as your handiwork w/out whitewalls 😉
and thank you for centering that back wheel front to back. the before pic was killing me.
really nice score. that would be a fun one to clean up because we can all see it's going to be excellent once done. The Delta ball light is close to the $140 you paid for the bike (assuming it cleans up well and you get a lens for it).
congrats!
@GTs58 have you seen pedals like the set on the OP's bike? They've got the 2 side screws like the early bows but i've not seen a set like these before. Seems unlikely that they are not original to the bike since everything else looks original.
