I'm looking for a 1970s rear derailleur that is compatible with the dropout image included. (This is from a 1971 Sports Tourer.) I think that the Schwinn-branded Shimano derailleurs are the correct model. These were labeled GT300 LeTour, GT400 LeTour and GT420 LeTour.
Thanks!
Martin...
I have a 1971 Sports Tourer, and I've recently discovered that the headset is not standard. (This must have been proprietary to Schwinn.)
Anyone have a nice or NOS headset they'd like to sell?
You may text me at 530 487 3375
I've got it on eBay. I have no idea what it will really sell for.
link to eBay listing: 1974 Schwinn Continental; Cool Town Bike Conversion; Brooks, Suntour, Shimano
FRAME and FORK: paint and stickers are UGLY; many small scratches and chips, plus some spray can repainting on the rear stays...
Hi Chuck,
Thanks for getting back to me, but I decided to bite the bullet and bought this really nice Campy GT RD for $47 (+shipping).
From what I've seen on eBay, your $30 price is very fair.
Thanks again,
Martin
Here's how this project ended - at least for now. It turns out that the 22" frame is really too small for me, so I found a 24" Sport Tourer to which I'm going to transfer the wheels, components, etc.
This was a fun project, but the frame is just a little too small for me.
upgraded wheels (which were damaged beyond repair)
replaced 1-piece crank with loose-bearing spindle BB and (beautiful!), vintage Shimano Golden Arrow (105) cranks
ditched front derailleur
replaced ~14-38t cassette with...
Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the reply.
It looks like one of the jockey wheels is cracked; is that correct? Is it all the way through, or simply a surface issue?
How much would you like for this? (To determine the shipping cost, I am at Chico, CA 95928.)
Thanks,
Martin
I'm looking for this for a "sorta" restoration of a 1971 Schwinn Sport Tourer. You can contact me at MJW.Chico@gmail.com or text at 530 487 3375

I probably paid too much for it, and it's probably gonna be a lot of work, but I'm really excited about this project. I just bought a 1971 Schwinn Sports Tourer frame (orange) - in a size that's a good fit for me - and I'm going to move the wheels and components over from my...
I just purchased this Schwinn LeTour frame on eBay. The serial number appears to be 4C01607. I can't seem to match this with any format/convention online.
Can anyone identify the year and country of manufacture?
Thanks!
It's a long story, but I'm trying to find out more about Schwinn dealers that were operating in the 1980s and 1990s in the greater Portland, Oregon area.
I recall that there was one called Phil's Cyclery and two others in Portland suburbs: one in Milwaukie, Oregon and another in Oak Grove or...
52 tooth chainwheel/chainring + 39 tooth chainwheel/chainring + chainguard ring
This came off of a 1974 Schwinn Continental. It's probably the same part for the Sprint and the Varsity of that year - and likely several other years. If you have a 1970s vintage Schwinn 10 speed with...
What you see is what you get. I am NOT a Campy expert; all I can definitively claim is that this came off of a 1967 Schwinn Paramount that had many Campy Nuovo Record components: seat post, hubs, and dropouts.
I think - but I do not and cannot guarantee this - that this is a Nuovo Record seat...
These were on a 1967 Schwinn Paramount, and I'm nearly certain that they are original; however, I can't be 100% sure. Many of the components were Campy (Nuovo) Record, and they also appear to be original, 1967 vintage.
The outside surfaces of both locknuts on the front hub are stamped "CAM...
In this picture, the seat and chain stays have been painted with the Rustoleum Maui blue, and the main tubes and the bottom bracket are the original opaque blue. It’s definitely not a museum quality restoration match, but it’s close enough for me. I just wanted to take care of a few spots...
I need to repaint some substantial portions of the chain stays on my 1973 Continental. The color is Opaque Blue, and it looks like "repair" spray paint sold by Schwinn dealers may have been Schwinn no. 72880.
Any suggestions, recommendations?
Thanks!
This came off of a 1974 Schwinn Continental. It's probably the same part for the Sprint and the Varsity of that year - and several years before and after.
I have this on eBay for $49 + shipping, but I really don't know the value. I'm asking $40 + shipping cost (about $10).
).
I would have separated these, but the bars have the original Opaque Blue factory tape! I just couldn't disturb that factory original tape that has there for 48 years!
I have this on eBay for $59 + shipping, but I really don't know the value. I'm asking $50 + shipping cost (about $15).
I found this simple solution. Sunlite makes a loose bearing bottom bracket that includes a 122mm spindle. I may be able to simply use the cups that are already pressed into the BB shell, if they're in good condition. I ordered this from my local bike shop: Sunlite BB Conversion Kit from...
You're welcome, and I really meant what I said. I'm an "OldBikeGuy", too, but my last Schwinn was a 1969 3-speed Speedster, and I have PLENTY to learn about old bikes!
Here's a search I could use help with, Rob:
Can I simply replace the 1-piece crank with a vintage spindle - like a Le Tour...
I'm looking for vintage (~1974) brake levers for a non-drop bar "lightweight" like the Suburban or Collegiate. I'm finding these with the red "dot" (clamp connector thingy) and gold.
Do these colors correlate to model years? If so, which color would be appropriate for ~1974?
THANKS!
Good question; good point.
After decades of cycling, my knees are pretty "finicky". However, I find that if I can dial in crank length and chainring size - perhaps even a BioPace ring! - I can cruise around on a heavy town bike all day, pain free. Plus I'm lazy; I'd rather swap out a...
I just purchased a 1973 Continental that I'm converting to my daily-rider townie. It has, of course, the cheap, 1-piece crank and loose bearing bottom bracket. I'd like to convert this to a square taper, cartridge bottom bracket so I'd have more choices about crank arm lengths and chainring...
Hi All!
I just bought a 1973 Continental that I want to convert to my reliable, less-likely-to-be-stolen town bike. It's far from pristine - perfect! - but it's pretty damn nice, and I love the color and those wheel hubs!
I'm going to
(1) replace the (original!?) tires and tubes,
(2) swap...
