I picked this up last weekend. I thought it was a 41 based on the paint, since it doesn’t quite match the ‘40 catalog, and it has the later style crank, but it’s an F serial number, so I guess probably a 1940 CWC built Hawthorne. I think the paint will clean up well, and for a bonus it came...
Have you measured that fork next to another fork? The proportions look off, like the distance between the legs and the struts seems far closer together than a normal postwar knee-action fork. Did early forks (like maybe in ‘38) have a different size?
I’d like to find a Sturmey Archer front Dynohub, or entire light setup if you’ve got it, but would like a hub dated ‘52, or I could go with a ‘51 since the bike is April ‘52.
You have to ship from Germany, but this has the most choices I’ve seen by far.
You can choose from black, white, cream, clay, red, grey or whitewall.

So this is my first real Schwinn Lightweight. I’m mostly a prewar person, however my significant other is not a big fan of the heavy bikes. I found this one on the east Coast and a friend picked it up for me a met me in PA, when I brought a NOS Taurus SHO bumper for him from Ohio (it’s good to...
@dave laidacker will you be around today (Sunday)? I can give you a call later, I’ll be driving through and would be interested in looking at the bike.
I built the closest thing I could. Tall frame, 28”, long wheelbase, tank with storage, multi-speed igh, front drum w/dynamo and a VERY powerful headlight. If I could only keep one bike, this would be it. The only thing that would improve it is a knee-action spring fork.
Does anyone have a diagram or patent drawing for the Delta Defender?
After years and years, I finally have a Delta Defender for the back of the ‘35 Colson. The holes were present, but the light was long gone. I cleaned up all the corrosion from an aging battery, got a new bulb, cleaned up...
I edited my post, it was supposed to say not lugged! But it seems that mine is probably a January vs December build, which inconveniently narrows the change down to the entirety of 1935.
I did a search for 1935 Colsons to see if I could find another Motorbike with a tall frame. I found and old post on Rat Rod Bikes, with a serial number of 5L2294, so the end of the year as opposed to the beginning, but not only is the frame not lugged, but the rear stays are VERY different.
You’ll have to pardon the drawing, I don’t have a proper scale, or a way to measure angles, other than by eyeball, and the bike is all together. But here’s my best attempt.
This actually looks phenomenal. I always liked both, with the exception of the fact that I think the Rocket Ray is kind of a clunky looking headlight. This fixes all of that.
I picked this bike up and I was going to do an updated Sturmey Archer wheelset, since these don’t appear to be the original wheels anyway. But I wanted to do a front drum brake, but because of where the axle attaches, I’m not sure if you can strap the drum arm to the forward most leg of the...
