Nice ay ay ay project Harpo. I’m into one of these projects, too with my ‘51 Columbia Franklinbike.
at least you have close to proper parts on it and not some like mine from the previous owner who must have been on dangerous drugs when building it. He must have been a “crash test dummy” by the...
I found a useful Columbia internal kickstand schematic off one of the other group forums posted by THE BLACK MONARK…..this will help. I can now see it’s a pin and not a screw/screws that holds the kickstand leg in place. I don’t have the special tool to make the removal easier so will have to...
Thanks, HEMI426…Sounds like the info you gave me about possibly two pins on each end sounds about right. They must be retainer pins that go in on each side and fit into a grooved out retainer. there were no visible screwdriver head markings on each top side of “pins”… and if there were a trace...
Still cant get the kick stand to unlock.. I’ve taken the crank off and got into the inside/ backside of the kickstand thru the crank housing and blasted KB in the hole as well as on the other parts of the kickstand with no success. I may have to drill out the pin looking thingy in the pin...
The project continues… still having trouble unlocking the stuck kickstand. I removed the cover and can see parts and how they should work but it will not unlock. Not sure if there is a pin that can be removed to allow the kickstand leg and internals to be removed. I’ve taken a hammer and...
Thank you, CABE family members for your input. I’ll be picking away at this MetalMess. Had to drill out rivets holding the skirt guards onto the rear fender to remove from frame. Wheels came off without snapping any nuts and bolts and chain was harder than Ellie May Clampett’s biscuits… not...
Yeah, Ian…..just started removing “stuff” to get down to the nitty gritty. I found this bike just the way it is….story from seller is that it belonged to an old couple who had since past on but bike was sitting in a sometimes flooded basement for years. The old dude must have been a tinkler and...
I’m just starting a project(like I need another one) on a bike I recently picked up mainly for a conglomeration of parts of all descriptions. It has a Columbia frame, balloon tires (Schwinn Typhoons) a locking springer fork (unlocked but no key) and I would guess JC Higgins skirt guards with...
Yeah….priced as it is listed, seller must be disconnected from the web world, very generous or it’s a scam as you mentioned, coasterbrakejunkie1969…..buyer beware!
Wow, bikemonkey….that clean up came out awesome from what you started with. Definitely needs a proper seat….that $39 repop seat, I’m sure will be replaced. Can the original well used seat be a recover candidate? Anyway…lookin good there. Enjoy the ride
Buying and selling can be a real trip sometimes. I try to buy local or fairly local….I’m a touchy-feely buyer and unless I know the seller or I’ve recently seen the bike, I want to see it in person. Pictures can be deceiving. When I tell a seller I’m interested and want to see the bike(s), I...
Welcome to the CABE, fellow sailor⚓️ .great source for vintage/antique info and help. It will be a learning experience in getting your friend‘s bike into tip top shape but will be a fun and rewarding experience. Let me know if I can be of any help…I’m on the northshore!
Love it…..cool looking bike for a reproduction. They ride fairly smooth, too. I recently bought a newer reproduction Western Flyer because I like it…. Wish you were closer….and wish my wife would not keeping tabs of some of my purchases…….if she only knew!
If he was in the business for 47 years, one year longer, he would have seen another “scarce“ one. Nowadays, it’s scarce to see one rattle can painted for that price! GLWS
@HEMI426 That’s quite a feat you did with your heavy weights for your number….I’m proud of you, brother. There are some Youngbloods out there that probably couldn’t do half of what you did.
Now…..get on the ground and give me ten, soldier! Enjoy your life, buddy and love those damn heavy...
I turned 70 in February and to me it’s just a number. I don’t feel old and doing good for my age(number). Best thing to do is keep active and……..keep riding those bikes! I need to keep up with my 6 grandkids!
Responding to this 7 year old post….since then, like last month, I acquired a green Western Flyer reproduction bike as was posted from the OP in 2016. I bought it not as an “investment bike” because it is not but because it was cool looking…. It’s being thoroughly cleaned, greased, oiled and...
