    Workstand

For what it's worth, Park used to sell a tool (since discontinued) that would expand inside the seattube to provide a rugged clamping surface. Christened the ISC-4, I'm sure one would not be hard to find, if you had the desire.
  2. RustySprockets

    Workstand

When I encounter a problematic frame, I usually raise the saddle and clamp to the exposed seatpost. My Park stand closes small enough, but one could use some sort of shim, if it's needed. Two wooden V-blocks would do the job for me.

Cache of Vintage Bikes - $475 (Westminster, MD)

    What happened to Niagara Cycle?

That's unfortunate. The few times I dealt with them, I always got good service and accurate order fulfillment. Their prices seemed fair and shipping was fast enough to satisfy my needs--I considered them a resource.

    Rust Penetration Tests/Best Liquid Wrench

I usually cut my mix roughly 50/50, but could probably go lighter on the acetone...the more solvent you use, the more likely it is to attack plastic, rubber, and other materials the mixture ought to be kept from. I would not recommend brake fluid because I spilled some once and took a big...

    Rust Penetration Tests/Best Liquid Wrench

I generally use ATF cut with acetone, which he mentioned, because it's the cheapest thing going--I don't have to feel guilty about slathering it on a badly stuck headset or seatpost. A half-gallon of the witches' brew will set you back less than the cost of one small can of name-brand stuff...

    Restoring white walls?

I used to love Bleche-Wite, but it just isn't the same since Westley's sold out a half-dozen years ago. Black Magic bought the name and slapped it on a reformulated, inferior product. Maybe you'll be happy with it, but it's just not the same as it used to be.

    Bent rim problem

You might be able to gently squeeze it back to a consistent width by using a soft-jawed vise or a hydraulic press, if you have access to one. An acquaintance once showed me a tool with several steel pins that could allow the user to "roll" this type of damage out of a bent rim. I have never...

    Are Air Tools Overkill?

I don't think they're overkill...and if you're into finishing, here's something to consider--they don't fear water the way electric tools do. Go ahead and wet sand to your heart's content.

    Old school decal hack

Or better yet, try pre-coating the paper with matte white, maybe?. This experiment worked well here because the final surface was white. Try this type of applique over any other color and the results will be...um...less than you hoped for. In my opinion, the best outcome is achieved when one...

    Troxel seat crash bar

The most appropriate fastener for that situation would be an elevator bolt, in my opinion. What is an elevator bolt, you ask? Well, it's a lot like a regular bolt, but for its exceptionally wide, flat head and keyed shank. I think it would be the easiest to install and the least likely to...

Help i.d. my new project? Schwinn or Mead?

A second, less accurate method of straightening a fork at home is to spin it around backwards, then use a common ratchet strap to "pull" the axle assembly toward the bottom bracket, rather than push it away as Bikemonkey has pictured. Just pointing out that there are solutions...some of 'em...

I saw that you were listed in Bakersfield, so I made a quick search of bike co-operatives that serve that area. You might want to check out the folks at BikeBakersfield and see if they have/lend a fork straightening tool called the "Little Brute." My co-op here in Baltimore has one and it...

What Thread Size Pedals Do My 52' Roadmaster have?

Pedals are sized by the measurement of the threaded shank by which they are affixed to the bike. In this case, that measurement should be 1/2". Most modern bikes wear a slightly beef-ier 9/16" pedal. I don't know your level of expertise, so I'll remind you that the two pedals are each...

    Ultrasonic Cleaner

They're great devices. I've seen it discussed elsewhere that Simple Green and cuprous metals don't get along. One must keep the solution weak when dealing with copper, brass, and bronze. It has nothing to do with the ultrasonic cleaning action itself.

I never even heard of these products before, but I've seen the concept work successfully, on a sweet steel Miyata. It saved the bike. A colleague heated the seized parts, much like Bricycle described above, then plunged the exposed section of stem into a shallow bucket of ice water. POP...

Kato, that bike is SO nice, I caution about letting frustration get the better of you. It sometimes causes us to pursue a rash course of action. Cutting = rash. If it were any common bike, I'd say sure...cut it up, whack on it, burn it in gasoline. Who cares? Whatever gets the job done...

Because the lock ring is missing, he really isn't in a position to "just leave it as is." That ring is necessary to hold the proper headset adjustment. As best I can figure, the bike has relied on the truss rods to perform that task...but that's no solution.

Here's an x-ray of what you're up against. Striking it from the bottom, while assembled, was a mistake because that drives the wedge even tighter than it already is. The proper approach is to first reinstall the bolt through the stem until it threads into the wedge below...but not quite all...
