Hi folks, Im usually a 26 inch ballon type of guy but with the growing interest in the stingray bikes I couldnt help but pick up a 64 stingray that needs restoring. I basically bought it because I already have a nice 64 frame and forks and I really needed the sissy bar, rear s2, and the...
Very nice. I'd be interested if you are looking for a new home for the old seat and handlebars. I believe those would be correct for my 64 copper-tone stingray.
I thought everyone knew that J frames were 46. :p
Just kidding, but I did read somewhere that Schwinn was supposed to change their lettering scheme to reflect post war manufactured bikes, but someone dropped the ball and a few thousand were stamped with the system they used before the war...
If it is a Panther (which I believe it is) then it most certainly had a tank. That is the high end model only 2nd to the Phantom. Bikes with Chrome rims, chrome fenders, and chrome springer most always had a tank.

Lucky for you...
Sure they did, like the one HERE I believe the only difference is the length of the legs. Prewar racks bolted to the rear axle hub and postwar had it's own mount loop in the frame as did the fenders.
Oh yeah! I invested $950 in a half assed Phantom, posted it here, and these guys were more than happy to kick me in the nuts. After the swelling goes down, they welcome you with open arms! Welcome to the club! Most never come back, the true fighters come back with bad ass bikes!
Wow, you guys have become soft since when I first got to this forum! Had that been me, you would have scoffed at the notion that the new phantom looking bike was of superior design and craftsmanship to the old 1949 Phantom. Comparing Shimano to New Departure would have probably got me banned...
PM sent! Also, how would i know if these rims I bought are older type? they have the single knurling on them but didn't they use these types of rims for repops as well? I'm not trying to be picky, but I want this lil 57 to look as authentic as possible.
HOLY poop! Thats a bad ass seat! I wanted to get my seat redone by Bob but I was worried it might look too "new". Now that I know he can make it look like that....damn! Ill buy it from you bro.. so you can buy a shiny tan one. :p
Im gonna start working on my 57 pixie for my kid. I got some chrome S7 wheels to replace the white phneumatic rims and tires. My question is, the rims I got have shimano hubs and brake lever. What type of rear hub would be on there in 57?
Yeah do what fatbar suggested, because f you cant unscrew the tank to install batteries, you're gonna have a doozey of a time shoving the horn and speaker through that horn button hole!
I am looking for a nice (rear) seat tab that says Messinger, for a 40's 50's 26 inch seat. I found the 2 side tabs at Memory Lane, but they dont have the rear tab. Thanks
Anyone need this? I'm not the seller, I just stumbled across it

Yeah thats the part you're missing, if I had a few small springs lying around I would try to fit a spring in between the positive terminal of the battery to the bulb first.
I need a seat to go on my 51 Phantom, this is the seat that is on there now, it's a Troxel Mens seat with a crash rail. The closest Ive seen anything resembling it is ona cycle truck, does anyone have a weathered Phantom seat to trade for this seat? The seat is stamped Troxel in the center. I...
Ive learned you gotta be careful about the threaded part sometimes being too long. It doesnt sound like this guy is too sure that it even belongs on a schwinn even though it may have come off of one. That being said, that springer wouldnt be right for an older bike because the older (pre-1954)...
I think Ozark Flyer is right "However" I do have a 46 DX with a dog leg crank, but that is likely because 46 bikes used some overstock prewar parts, like the skinny truss rods, ball end grips, and dog leg cranks.
Ok, first question, seat clamps.. what is the "correct" way to mount the seat clamp? I see many bikes with the nut facing the nicer chain guard side of the bike, and others with the seat clamp bolt on the chain guard side. Im thinking the nut side is the correct way, only because of a D clamp...
Yes, the fender width, and frame width is the same. Just make sure the front fender has the double indents for the fork and truss rods, or springer fork and springer truss's
I have one like that on my phantom, I just hit it with my wire wheel and it came out nice and shiny. Not chrome like, but shiny cad looking. I dont think seat posts were chromed until the 60's. Even then, I think it was only for Stingray Krates.
Some refer to the bottom bracket as bearing cups. They should be stamped with A.S. & Co. or just A.S. Im not sure and it's too cold out to walk to the garage. :p
I agree with everything rebirthbikes said except for the Schwinn stamped rear hub and handlebars. As far as I know, all phantoms...
Nice Phantom, I agree, thats a pre-59 decal on the chainguard, but what can you do, for 1, it looks better than the 59 decal, and for another, it's the only option you have! The seatpost clamp needs adjustig too.. :p
Yes indeed! Schwinn's Facebook page is celebrating 117 years of happy people.

I plan on putting little party hats on my bikes and having a beer with them. Maybe even grease their chains as a surprise gift. :p
Yeah don't forget... that's replacement fender cost "without" the light and cover. It's easy to get a good $700 into these things once you obtain them.
Yes totally different hardware, hey greenephantom, I was under the impression that ND was not used after 1954? I guess they used them till they ran out of stock, or was 55 the last year before they made the switch to Bendix.
What would keep the tank in place though if the cross bar is not there? The angle of the bars? If not needed for the tank, why was the cross bar there? Additional support?
I always had those questions.
That looks great, I just can't comprehend how you got the fenders so clean. Would you mind sharing a few secrets?
How did you get the paint so clean? I was told to use rubbing compound, but then what?

Hey bro, send me a txt or something, I dont have your number on my new phone. Thanks
This One gets my vote.
That tank will fit on just about any straight bar Schwinn that you could find. I believe they stopped using them in the 60's and they came on everything from Wasps, to Deluxe Tornados, to Flying Stars. You can find straightbar bikes with no tank for around 2 to $300. Maybe even cheaper depending...
Thanks for all the help fellas.. I will try this first thing in the morning. I'm off to get drunk with the crew. (No drinking and driving - or riding) I will report back.
