Never ever clear coat over a patina bike. The end result just looks so bad. The best way to preserve the look is to leave it alone. If you feel you must do something, get out the trusty WD 40 and give it a good soaking followed by a rubdown with a clean cloth
I found a 20 inch 36 spoke rim with a Bendix 2 speed red band kickback mounted. It looks Oem ( not Schwinn). This has me wondering what bike this would have come on. The rim is wide enough to fit a balloon tire. Did any muscle bikes come with this combo or is this a custom build.
I think you would be hard pressed to find a nicer blue Jag. That bike looks to be lightly used based on the condition of the paint and almost dent free fenders. Replacing the crank arm is no biggie. It should clean up beautifully
That was a very pricy bike when it was new. I am always amazed at how well Schwinn bikes clean up.You know all the tricks so I’m sure it will turn out great
Looking to replace the brake pads on my rod brake equipped English build lightweight. This is a late thirtys something bike that was branded as an Elgin and sold through Sears locations. It has an early Sturmey Archer AW hub with patent applied for stamped where the date of the hub is usually...
I ran across this add from 1963 showing a 15 speed Schwinn Sierra. Appears to be a top of the line bike. I never have seen one.was this a misprint or was it replaced by another model?
Is there a preferred way to adjust the tension on the bottom bracket bearings with the Schwinn one piece crank? I typically use the Lucas red grease. I set mine just tight enough so there is no wobble felt when pushing the crank arm side to side. What say you?
Thanks everyone for your help. I paid 25$ Because of the Coppertone paint. It should clean up well. I think it will remain a homemade tourist for my riding cumfort.
I picked up this barn find tourist with bar tape on the upright handlebars. It appears to have been there since new. Was this a factory install or a bike shop mod? Also, did all tourist Varsity’s have fenders. thanks!
Getting info on these oldies is really difficult. I’ve owned it for at least 10 years, picking it up at Ann Arbor for 250$. Being a repaint, I can go repaint in the original orange or leave as is. The problem is that I have no idea what striping or paint effects were used by the factory. The best...
I’m posting a bunch of pics hoping someone can help me figure out what I have. It’s been repainted black years ago over the original orange color. It appears the fork is from a different bike. Interesting head badge looks to be original. Stamping under bottom bracket is very unusual. Thanks in...
I would keep soaking it with Kroil oil or rust blaster. Twist it with a screwdriver like you have been doing but not enough to strip it. Keep doing this every 15 minutes or so until it breaks loose. Last resort, get out the dremmel tool.
