I'm with you on the headbadge! I have a friend with a blue single speed and a red five. (Frame only colors) We were looking at them last night and neither have coded badges.
I guess factory chrome would be possible. They were still doing chrome Paramounts at the time, right?
Every once in a while a chrome one like this pops up online with some wild description about how it came to be... I'm going to sit this one out when it comes to any speculation. The serial number is interesting so I'm sure there is an interesting story behind it.
I'm right behind you when it comes to what I have forgotten! 😆
I sold Schwinns from 1991 up to the point where Pacific bought them out (2001?) We hung on to their fitness line (Nautilus) for a few more years after that.
The red ones were 1992 and came out of Taiwan. There was a big stink over those big "Designed in USA" decals that year too. We were sent an envelope of "Made in Taiwan, China, and Hungary" stickers that we had to install right under those.
Red is a 92 model number and the blue is a 90. Did you look at the other side of the boxes? They have may have stamped the date codes on one label instead of both...
Trying to remember here but did Klein have some involvement with these besides having the patent number decal on the frames? These bikes all had really nice welds.
I started at the shop in early 1991 and the first bike I assembled was a black Impact Pro. That was a Greenville bike. Not sure if those were built by Giant as well or not...
Also, the High Plains Aluminum bikes came out of Greenville.
I will add that the High Plains, Crisscross, and Crosscuts (and maybe a few others) were made in both Greenville and Giant in Taiwan in 1991. We wouldn't know what we were getting until they arrived. (I only remember this because we had a customer that wanted two red Crosscuts and they HAD to...
There are always a few guys there with vintage stuff but it's mostly newer bikes and parts. The show is always fun and you never know what is going to show up. It's fast-moving and crowded. I've hauled quite a few nice things out of there over the years...
Been going since 2012. Always a fun, fast-moving swap. First time as a vendor last year and we had a great time and even sold some stuff! Setting up again this year.
We had one of these in the shop back in the day. We also had one 24" wheel. I think the owner kept both of them for their collection. They were in the basement forever and I never saw them on the sales floor.
The Hercules is Raleigh-built and an odd color. Maybe evaluate it a little further before parting it out... 🙂
Looks like it might have an old Miller kickstand on it too?
I plan on heading up early Saturday morning. Not sure what I'm bringing. Depends on what's easiest to get at! 😆
I do have a nice 58 Mk II Jaguar, A cool Raleigh roadster with rod actuated drum brakes, some New World lightweights and some Violet 1965 Varsities.
That's a clean one! They rarely show up with the basket still attached. I've seen them with a few different badges and Monark is usually credited as the mf'r but I'm not sure who really made them. These things are heavy but they're fun to ride!
Those bikes used lead as filler to smooth out the joints and that's probably what is cracked. My DX had a similar crack in the same spot and it was just the filler.
You can buy 28" Delta Cruisers with puncture protection direct from Schwalbe. Their prices are reasonable and they ship pretty quick too.

How about a basement find? This one sat in the basement of the bike shop where I worked for a good 20+ years. Every once in a while I would pester the owner to sell it to me but never had any luck. Well, a few weeks ago they decided to make some room down there and it became available!
I...
The aftermarket made them for sure. I know there are some S-7 sized Sliks lurking in the bowels of the basement of a local shop. They have two grooves in the tread. Not sure if they are Schwinn branded or someone else like Uniroyal. I'll have to check next time I stop in.
Many 1971 Sting Rays and Krates had single knurl rear S-2's. The only other instance of the single knurl S-2's I'm aware of were the Csepel (Hungary) made cruisers from the early 90's. These were pretty nice rims too.
I'm sure some of the old school Schwinn guys on the forums can chime in with...
Ooooh! The purple water balloon commercials! Yeah, too bad they didn't run. Those bikes could have taken off but the "new Schwinn" wanted to concentrate on adult bikes instead. I have a complete set of NOS Z bikes and when I show them to people, nobody remembers them.
Well, a Sport Limited is a rare bike and there isn't much information out there about them. (I have one and tried to research it but Sheldon Brown's website is about the only place that mentions them)
Unfortunately, rare doesn't equal value here and I doubt there is much demand for one of...
Welcome!
I worked for a Schwinn dealer from 1991 until 2014 and we carried the brand from the late 70's right up to when they went to department stores. I look forward to hearing the stories!
Yes and no. The Black Friday Krates were as low as $49.00 when they were in the stores. They got real cheap right after the Holidays.
That being said, Ive seen them sell for $250 already and the one pictured isn't rusty like a lot of them...
Received one of these for my birthday in 1974. Came from Kiddie City. My first "real" bike. It went from what you see in the brochure to a "banana seat" bike, later to a green spraybombed "BMX" bike, then it got pretty much destroyed. Never saw another until a couple years ago, a somewhat...
This thread reminded me of some kind of dumb things we did in the early 90's. One was turning standard five speed Sting Rays into Krates. I sold a beautiful original 71 campus green five speed to a buddy that made it into a Pea. Since then I've had a lot of Pea Pickers come through my collection...
