I have a ladies 22” Roadster that is surplus at the moment. It is all original right down to the tubes, tires, pump and Brooks B72 saddle. It is a 1973. It literally hasn’t been ridden since the late 1970s and needs to be stripped, lubed and cleaned. I really don’t want to ship this bike, so...
Hmm. One whole picture? That sure isn’t much to go on.
But, I see the later style fenders, a pletcher kickstand, non rebuildable pedals and what appears to be a weird, aftermarket seat. The white portion on the rear fender tells us no later than late 1970s, say, 1978, and the non rebuildable...
I bought that vise in 1990 for the hard to swallow at the time price of $390, at Globe Tool, on University Avenue in St Paul. The place has been gone for years. My buddy passed on buying one at the time, unwilling to shell out the cash. The mount is 4140, drawn over mandrill, seamless 1/4” wall...
I completed the mechanical work today, rode it about a mile before dark, and pronounced it good. I have a bit more wet sanding and buffing to do, but, it is a rider at this point.
Plan on riding this one on Lake Pepin this year, in May.
Ted
The bike is a Sports model, not a Superbe, but, people who know that are few and far between. Same on the Raleigh decals, using one version over another is not likely to be noticed by anyone.
Use what you like, and enjoy your bike.
Ted
Have you considered doing Lake Pepin in May? It is a blast.

The boy and I do it on Roadsters. People with more common sense utilize a Sports, typically.
Ted
That one is a bit rare, it is a DL-1 that has the 8” crank arms, and, rebuildable, reflector pedals. Those cranks were used maybe 1965-1969 on DL-1 bikes, and the next owner should be very careful pressing the cotters as to not damage the crank arm, as, getting a match will be mostly impossible...
Good looking old bike you have there.
I've seen guys do the Lake Pepin 3 Speed Tour on DL1s with 40 year old tires. It never ends well, it seems, and rod brake bikes are a pain in the butt to work on near the side of the road.
My Roadsters have 28” Schwalbe Marathons on them. We have a ladies...
Best of luck on your surgery, Mike.
That first.
To me, this is a hobby. I won’t lose sleep over a missed score, or paying a few bucks too much. If I want something, I buy it. If I’m messing around with best offers on the ‘bay, I don’t truly need or have to have it.
Thats all I got.
Ted
Making some progress on the Raleigh International I painted last fall. I hate wet sanding and buffing. Hope to have this road ready by Lake Pepin. It is a bit slow because some of the components were made in 1974, and some were made this year. Everything has to be mocked up and tried. 22” frame...
Hey, Ed!
I‘m not seeing a locking fork in the pictures.
That said, there is a guy on the ‘bay who does those keys, he is based in Australia and all he needs is the 3 digit code off the lock. He guarantees it will work, and his prices are reasonable. He did keys for one of my Raleigh’s and it...
Probably didn’t have to search Craig’s List for too long to figure out he really didn’t have much.
Bet it ended up next to a curb with a “free” sign on it. Hope, in that case, it went to somebody who needed a cheap bike.
Many, do. But, most, don’t.
Ted
The alloy brakes didn’t come on the bike. The bike would have had the brakes that had specific cables with a solid knarp on the end. The brakes were likely replaced for that exact reason. It is easy to silver solder a spoke nipple on to a brake cable to get the old style brakes working, but, I’m...
The parts between both brands interchange. The big clue is you said it worked temporarily and then it didn’t. I would guess it is gummed up as well. If the dog spring is weak, or broken, you can get that symptom also. I have seen a few chipped pawls over the years, but, I don’t believe that is...
I painted it to match my Wife’s Robin Hood 5 speed. The color is a mid 1990s Kia color, that matches perfectly. I painted a Presstube rack for her bike at the same time.
This was just another International frame that got parted for its Campagnolo kit, and was left to sit in a shed.
Ted
I went to a garage sale, and asked if they had any bikes, a long time ago. The guy said there was one behind the shed, and I walked out back to look at it. It was a Raleigh Sprite 5 speed internal hub, that had been sitting so long, it had sunk into the dirt up to the hubs. The leather seat had...
Either answer is not wrong.
Nobody who was at the hardware store when this bike was new, is alive today. It got rusty, at the hands of others, who are mostly no longer here. Nobody who remembers what it looked like, new, is here to comment on it.
If you service it, and run it, you have improved...
I restored one, but, I never ride it, seldom see it actually. The bikes that are cleaned up and serviced get used all the time.
Before and after on the 1959 Schwinn Tiger, and the 1941 Colson Scout. The Tiger got everything, and I did it all, the Colson just got put back on the road. The Greek...
My son upgraded from an alloy Marin to a carbon fiber Orbea for his high school mountain bike team.
Yea, it wasn’t free. But, about two practices in, he got moved to varsity.
Ted
Pretty sure, but, not positive, the women’s handlebars are different that year then the men’s.
I never really messed with women’s bikes of that vintage.
Somebody here will know.
Ted
If your Speedster is a ‘59, it is absolutely the correct part.
My Tiger is a ’59 also, the stars were aligned when I found that reflector. I knew what I needed, and got lucky. Had it on hand when I restored my bike.
Looks like you need another, unfortunately. They don’t turn up that often.
Ted
Been really, really happy with the Schwalbe Marathon tires on our Roadsters. Usually run 60psi in them.
The boy and I, doing The Lake Pepin Tour, on roadsters, and Marathons, last spring.
Ted
The tires being original is cool, but, not actually a plus if you intend to use it, or, pass it along to someone else to use.
The tires on the wife’s Robin Hood are the Grand Bois Ultra Leger (ultra lights) that are sold by I’s bike shop, in Kyoto, Japan. I think Panaracer actually produces the...
This one is pretty good. Sturmey Archer drum brakes, alloy rims, Ritchie stem bearing, smooth, quiet, and folds in the middle. The trunk holds a 12 pack, and ice, don’t ask me how I know.
Ted
The Wife’s Robin Hood Five Speed. I painted a parted out International frame to match her bike, and will build it with 27“ Sun rims and a five speed hub as well. Might have it together for a lake Pepin, if I ever get off 12s at work.
Ted
Couple things….
The Raleigh Sports has a set of reflector, rebuildable Raleigh pedals on it, I’ve seen about two sets in the 30 years I‘ve been looking. Further, the stem is a rare Superbe/Sprite version, a handsome piece that doesn’t turn up every day of the week. The tires appear to be...
The hub is the first clue, the plastic pulley wheel for the shift cable nails it down as early 1960s. Good chance there is a date code under the seat, as well.
Cool ad for the Colts! I have a 1963 Colt. Much modified, but, my kid did 10 years of Lake Pepin Tours on the little guy. He stands 6’...
My dog running and short beer run bicycle, 1972 vintage, Nexus 3 speed hub, alloy ballooner rims, 12 volt period generator lamp.
I still have the original parts, but 3 speeds are nice coming home with a case in the basket.
Ted
I thought the post was a question, since, there was a question mark in the title.
Love me some coasters. There is a Mexican Bendix laying next to my shed, in the dirt, free, come get it.
Replaced it with something better. Not free. But, unquestionably better.
Free is good, unless it ain’t...
If I show up with this one at the ABCE (All British Cycling Event, local tweed ride) I win ”Best Roadster”, hands down. I can’t believe how few of them are in this condition. I own four Roadsters, but, this one is by far the best, and the best I’ve ever seen, anywhere.
I‘m 17 miles north of...
