hi all. Doing some organizing of my parts stash, and I don't think I'll ever get around to rebuilding & sorting out the SA SW hub I took out of a '58 Jaguar I restored decades ago. I believe it is complete, at least it was when I took it out and I'm pretty good about keeping parts together, but...
hello all
helping out a friend fix up his his late father's 1941 CCM Cadet. One of the cool parts of the bike is that his dad stamped his name on the stem, but of course I discovered that the stem is cracked in several places almost all the way around just above the two slots. I have a friend...
thanks for the info guys.
Doesn't have the same layout as a Catalina that I can see. Will check out the CCM Vintage Forum, it's not up right now though.

Couldn't seem to locate the FB group. Have asked the owner for better pics and a serial number as...
need some help on a model i.d. for headbadge & chainguard (likely NOT a CCM)
hello all
looking for some more info on an old CCM on behalf of a friend of mine; I only have a couple of not-so-great pics to go on. I did some quick research and found that the frames on the CCM Catalina...
hello
looking for a Bendix 36 hole red band hub with an 18 tooth sprocket, preferably an RB2 but an earlier splined example would also be great. Condition of chrome not important, in fact I'd prefer if it was a bit ratty as I'm going black with it.
thanks!

thanks cds, I'll try to get out to the garage to do some measuring myself. Pretty sure the Wald post I have is supposed to be 13/16, but I'll pull it out and see if it's got any part number or spec on it.
I also noticed that M&S used a lot of Wald parts, they didn't seem to make much but the...

when I first put my post-war Manton & Smith back together last year I had sourced a nice 13/16" lay-back seat post for it, however it wouldn't go in more than about 1.5" and got stuck pretty good (it ended up fitting fine into my '64 Schwinn Typhoon though). I went through my stash...
I've used this system lots, works wonders:
Evaporust or other similar products remove rust but are pretty easy on paint, as long as you don't leave it in for too long.
good luck

not sure if this is of any use or not, but I've found that flickr is a good source for original manual scans; here's some on the triplspeed:
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=triplspeed
maybe it's an adjustment issue?
anyways good luck

hi Freqman
I think the smaller seat mast decal would be more suited to what I'm working on, when do you think you might have more made? And where would I look for a pic of one?
Sorry for any thread derailment.
thanks
greg v.
great, thanks for the additional info.
So am I correct in thinking that Huffman's as this era could be badged as any of:
-Huffman
"Lightning Flyer" http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr38/8028990474/in/pool-71863526@N00/lightbox/
-Dayton...
thanks again Scott!
understood it could have been labeled any number of different brands, but of course I'm curious as to what it may have been badged originally.
Out of curiosity, what's the tip-off that it's not a Western Flyer? The serial number?
cheers
greg v.
hi Scott
you may well be totally correct. I was basing the Western Flyer i.d. on some of the previous feedback plus the red bike a bit down the page on this thread on RatRodBikes:
http://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=34042&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=135
The frame details seem...
great thanks for all the input guys!
Had a quick look at some Airflytes, none that I could see had the dead-straight downtube. Seems it's a 1938/39 Huffman made Western Flyer so far, although I keep wondering about the ghosted head badge outline; wonder if it had anything to do with the bike...
fwiw here's a link to a New Departure manual scanned and posted on flickr; I believe all the pages are there if you root around. At any rate this page calls out for automotive grease on the bearings and hypoid lubricant on the disc set...
thanks tripple3!
So you think the Western Flyer in the above link might also be a Huffman built? By the way I totally missed that you'd indicated it was a Huffman built in your first reply to this; I didn't read the subject line.....
cheers

hello all
I have this posted in the General Discussion section, but I should have posted it here in the first place; I'm hoping maybe some of you balloon tire gents who don't peruse the General Discussion section very often might have a look...
hi again
finally picked up the frame, serial number is:
I don't see any C with a W in it, does this indicate it is not a CWC frame?
There's some ghosting where a head badge was, not any Western Flyer shape that I'm familiar with but then again the bike's been repainted so who...
I think the rear seat stays are fine, there's no evidence of undue distortion on the chain stays, but again the photos are small; looks to me like the angle of the side photos are playing tricks. Geometry looks similar to my Manton & Smith frame:
At any rate I'll know soon enough once I...
thanks guys!
When I have the serial number hopefully I can narrow it down to who made it and when.
And yes the frame looks pretty beat-up, which oddly enough is what attracted me to it, as I enjoy the metal working aspect of getting crappy old frames back into decent shape. Looks like I'll...

just got a new frame, haven't taken delivery of it yet so I do not have a serial number, just some low-res pics. Was told it was a pre-war CWC, closest match I can see is this red Western Flyer (about 1/4 way down the page) posted over on Rat Rod Bikes...
My copy of the 1957 Schwinn service manual says to grease the bearings and drive screw but to oil the discs, if that helps any. I did just that on my recent model D rebuild and it didn't brake worth a damn and it screached loudly; after adding quite a few drops of 10W30 thru the oiling hole it...
cool bike imho! Rims look to be drop centers, repros readily available from Memory Lane (http://www.memorylane-classics.com/) and eBay (several sets on there right now). Most service parts readily available (bottom bracket etc.). Same for tires. Good news is the bike looks fairly complete, and...
There's also the guys that seem to make a living (?) by parting bikes out. I got sick of seeing decent Schwinn middleweights parted out on eBay all day long about 5 years ago, and it's still going on. I'm assuming these guys pick up these bikes for cheap then part them out to make a few quick...
thanks for all the info guys.
So any suggestions for a better chain brand than KMC?
And how do you address an off-center front sprocket? Is there an established procedure to fix this? Or are we talking hogging out holes with a file and bending up some wire as an ad-hoc dial indicator until...
I hadn't thought of that, thanks! I'm using a regular KMC chain right now, seemed decent enough quality but likely made you-know-where, so could be the culprit.
Any suggestions on a good quality 1/8" x 1/2" chain?
cheers
greg v.
noticed this on a couple of bikes, most recently on my '64 Typhoon last night after I finished repacking the bottom bracket. Seems the chain tension changes as the crank is rotated, from a bit too loose to a bit too tight. I can only assume that either the front or rear sprockets are out of...
finally got my M&S finished, took it out for it's second ride yesterday (24 miles), everything seems to be holding tight. Had to shim the headset cups and re-set the rear hub cones after the first short ride, amongst other things. Bike rides nice and smooth, very happy with the New Departure...
hello all
gathering parts for my Feb '58 Jaguar, and wondering what hub it would have had originally (I bought it parted out). I had a '58 Corvette (forget the month) that came with the SW hub, which of course didn't work. Also had a '59 Corvette that came with the Austrian-built AW clone...
wtb: 1957 dated Sturmey Archer 36 hole AW hub or hub shell
looking for a nice AW hub for a Feb '58 dated Schwinn Jaguar, so anything 1957 would be great, although something from the later half of the year would be preferred. The nicer the hub shell the better, condition of the inner components...
Jim will know more than I, but I've personally only seen the Austrian hub on '59's, but I'll bet there could have been some overlap between the model years. I've also only seen them with the matching "egg" shifter, but again since the shifters on both types are interchangeable (along with all of...
thanks again Gordon!
I actually fluked out and have 3 spare transfer springs; I was not aware that they needed to be replaced unless damaged though, so thanks for that info.
cheers

hello all
getting all the parts sorted on my Model D, and I noticed that the teeth on the brake clutch (D6) are a little worn, with some taper towards the outer edge; the teeth on the clutch sleeve (D3) look pretty good, and the two parts mesh together very well, but when together there is...
thanks Gordon, that makes sense; upon closer inspection the threads on the ND axle (not sure why I was calling it a shaft) have a more square profile to them.
cheers
gregv
been cleaning up my pre-war model D hub, and I wanted to use the much larger locknuts from a Bendix RB2 hub, however they don't seem to want to thread onto the ND shaft. I measured the threads on both the ND and Bendix shafts, and they both seem to be 5/16" x 24nf, but while the ND hardware will...
The chain stays are a not exactly centered on the bb are they? Must be intentional, as the extra material is on the crank side maybe?
What kind of bike is that?
cheers
greg v
Finished the frame work this past Friday! Besides the crushed chain stays, one of the rear dropouts was down about 1/2" compared to the other side, both dropouts were bent 3/4" to the right side, the hub spacing had to be increased by about 1 1/2", and finally the neck tube was about 3/16"...
cool bike! You could try the good folks at Memory Lane Classics, they might have a line on a light; eBay is also worth looking at.
http://www.memorylane-classics.com/
good luck

hello all
looking for some 1/2" pedals for my M&S project, and I've noticed the Torrington repros on eBay; are they the same as the ones from Memory Lane? These ones are missing the "N" on Torrington on the end caps, so they read "Torri gton"...
