old cog + new chain = bike complaining. it didn't make noise before because the pitch of the chain and cog had increased together with use and they matched. let's see the cog

the silver 7t to the left looks it has a larger hole than the others...morrow? could just be the perspective tho

the hub comes apart from the brake arm side, probably easier to take the guts out to get to the spokes than removing the cog from the driver.

black would likely be too much of a contrast, I'd try something more subtle: a couple/few different shades of brown slightly darker than the current color, applied with a not-soaked dauber or airbrush then burnished. going slow. Tandy Leather has dyes and hi-lite stains that should do it.
