I’m still goin on this thing!
While digging on the Big Adventure bike, the center horn tank button was interesting to me.
Everyone that did replicas would just use a generic vintage starter button, which is close but not right.
The machined aluminum bezel was so unique. There was a theory...
The stem I’m looking for is on my real original Pee Wee bike and I’d like to get one for my replica, so replacing isn’t an option.
It’s a 21.1 shaft in a late style Schwinn springer with the welded (not cast) steerer
Close…but still off in a lot of places. Here’s a few of the main details I can’t seem to find on any stems
-flat top
-rounded clamp area (where bolt goes through)
-Z bolt
-high rise
-clamp area 90 degrees to stem (unlike most Schwinn
-no markings anywhere on stem or shaft
Wald was my first thought but the one I’m looking for is very different in rise and the clamping area and there’s no stampings on the stem shaft at all
It never ends….
Most screen used bikes use a unique stem with a “Z” stem bolt. I’ve been unable to find one yet, but my real Big Adventure bike has one.
To get the Z bolt look I used a shaved down Allen bolt, then molded and cast my real bolt in resin to make a bolt cap. This will keep my OCD...
More silly Big Adventure bike upgrades in the name of accuracy!
There is one bike in the movie that has the Messinger style seat with the diamonds on the side (the hero bike at the beginning). All the others I’ve seen have a generic unmarked Messinger seat. Also all screen used have a Wald...
Latest update…
Now since I know some of you are out there searching for the correct spoke nipples, bottom bracket washers etc to complete your restorations, so I feel like this is a safe space to share this 😂
It seems most if not all screen used bikes used this very specific springer piviot...
There’s a few ways to go about this. I used to source all the grips for S&M bike co, and I’ve done casting and printing so here’s the options as I see it:
Casting: make a mold of an existing grip, then pour urathane rubber compound for your grips. Smooth-On makes great casting supplies and can...
I’m sure I’ll keep tweaking this thing to make it more accurate. Here’s the latest..
Changed my tank from vac-formed to a steel reproduction. The softness of the vents was bugging me. I could cast my real tank but I don’t want to damage it. I did fill the bottom of the vents as screen used are...
As you guessed it’s the same siren as the tiger on the Pee Wee bike but with a skull. They made quite a few character variations (tiger, skull, even E.T.!) and two size variations.
Well bottom line is abnormalities and things not pictured in catalogs exist.
I can’t prove it’s real and you can’t prove it’s fake so there you go. Gold star for effort 😁
You mean the reflection of the grass in the chrome on the tank?
There’s been purple krates, light blue stingrays, orange aerocycles..I’d think a blue phantom isn’t a impossibility
I loved Big Adventure ever since I saw it in the theater the weekend it came out. My first job ever was as a bicycle mechanic and I quickly became obsessed with restoring vintage bicycles. I later became a professional fabricator. I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to build the...
Elgin did some super strange stuff through the years…I wouldn’t be surprised if your bike had the rack with the mount and it just wasn’t used…or maybe there’s mountless version out there.
I use a site called TeeSpring for the shirts I sell (Porsche Stuff) Its all print to order..just upload the design and that's it. Maybe a site like that would be an option

Anyone recognize this stem? Looks like Schwinn stem that’s been welded, but the welds look really nice and it appears to be chromed so I don’t think it’s a homemade job. Maybe early Bmx?
Village Schwinn bike shop in Somers Point NJ. First real job..learned everything I know about wrenching and vintage bikes from the master Quas Gandolfo (and Mr&Mrs G). Here’s just a small sample of what was around the shop in the 80s…no wonder I ended up into vintage bikes!
Here's an interesting one..the Tarzan bike. The one real bike that did not come from Pedal Pusher. That honor goes to Garry Littlejohn. This is the bike that explains the count discrepancy between Pedal Pusher (13 bikes) and the Propmaster (14 bikes). Sold at auction in 1995
