    Swoopy frame Trike ID?

Guess The Mercury was a step up with the fender and better pinstriping- thanks!

    Swoopy frame Trike ID?

Thanks! I just checked google for Murray- looks like Murray Mercury is right. Saw one fuzzy ad from 58 which seems to show that frame, too

    Swoopy frame Trike ID?

Hi all- a friend just turned this one up and I wanted to help her ID it. Any guesses? Thanks!

Post a photo of a fender ornament you like.

The plane is fantastic! as are the bombs:) Just found one of these English pewter glass bottom mugs in the thrift shop and think I'll be liberating the lion for mascot duty eventually

    1950s Champion Sports 3-Speed project

Thanks! I saw a Robin Hood in person for the first time at the swap meet in Hershey a year or two ago- great bike and headbadge! I guess painting one red would make it a 'Will Scarlet' edition :)

    1950s Champion Sports 3-Speed project

Sorry it took a while to get pics up and in the right forum section. Other than the pedal issue and basic maintenance, I'd like to get the reflective tape off the headbadge decal (the tape is printed with the same design but it's pretty faded. Wonder what the safest goo-gone type stuff is to do...

    1950s Champion Sports 3-Speed project

I picked up a dirty and semi-crusty Champion bike at the local Habitat Restore and spent a few hours cleaning it so far. Have to say, I'm impressed with the survival of the chrome. The candy apple paint really glows. Only immediate concern was a stripped pedal hole. In a moment of brainlessness...

Thanks and- Oops! Sorry about that! Guess I should avoid posting via the phone. Moderators please move/delete if I don't figure out how first.

Need help on dating an old bike in a photo

A European bike would be unlikely as the photo was taken in rural North Carolina. I just assumed it was older than the 1915 date he was guessing for it and it seemed close to the TOC bikes I've seen

Need help on dating an old bike in a photo

Don't know that this is any better but- badge

Need help on dating an old bike in a photo

Thanks! I'm away from my books, etc. but was guessing around TOC, maybe Columbia? Any parts that look a little earlier? I looked at the chainwheel database but all I could find was Schwinn, Rollfast, and Hawthorne and all those 4-ring wheels had larger rings with less gap between than this...

Need help on dating an old bike in a photo

Hi- thought I'd see if I could narrow down a date for a friend's family photo- anyone have a good guess?

Screw Spacing on Victor and Fowler Headbadges?

Hi- still trying to ID my tandem. Can anyone tell me how far apart the holes on these two badges are?
  15. G

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Thought I posted these but don't see them now. Parts after paint/gunk removal. The sprockets/chainwheels seem different from the Victor approach, ditto the crank bolting, etc.
  16. G

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Spent a little more time getting rid of the white paint with acetone- still wondering if this tandem was originally black or plated. The headset is definitely plated and there are trances of smooth plating along all the tubes, not just at the joints. I've been looking at the badges again and...

    How old is everyone

32, have had old bikes off and on since I was 13 or 14.

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Iver bars on the Orient/America type bike Ok- finally getting back to this tandem after finishing my dissertation! I just pulled out the half a handlebar that was on it when I got it and found a new clue! So- is there any chance these are what came on a turn of the century bike or would they...

Set of Nickel Spokes For 28" Wheels

Think they're heavy duty enough for tandem use?

    Burglary, vandalism, bikes gone!!

Oh man- just reading all this- so sorry jd! So senseless. I hope you can feel comfortable/safe again soon.

bikes at Wheels Thru TIme Motorcycle Museum, Maggie Valley, NC

Yep on all folks have said above- I was really impressed by the museum and the enthusiasm of the folks there! They started three different bikes just in the time we were in the building. I would love to see the Traub run! Amazing story of its discovery after being walled up in Chicago for most...

bikes at Wheels Thru TIme Motorcycle Museum, Maggie Valley, NC

It's a wonderful museum- they work to make sure every motorcycle is in running shape- real lovers of original patinas

bikes at Wheels Thru TIme Motorcycle Museum, Maggie Valley, NC

After a weekend cruising Rte 129/ The Dragon, Deal's Gap, NC, some of our Volkswagen folks went over to Maggie Valley to check out the Wheels Thru Time museum- found a number of bikes tucked in here and there: Here are the rest of the motorcycles and cars-...

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Thanks- was hoping to find better resolution versions of a couple of those! Seems like the patents postdate the failure of the original Fowler company but Fowler and F.C. Ferrin were probably building bikes pretty similar to those they built and sold in the 1893-7 period.

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Headset had more to say for itself after an electrolysis bath followed by vinegar. IDEAL PAT. JUNE 13, 99 Is this the Ideal mentioned in this history? Between this, the split down tubes, and the D&J bearing blocks, signs point to Chicago...

Give It Your Best Shot! (bike photography)

very nice! here are a couple I took in Amsterdam two years back :)
  27. G

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Keeping what's left of the original paint.. or do you mean keep the nickel, too? I think the paint holds most of the use-wear history/biography of the bike.. the brightwork is mostly a study in corrosion. Other than that, seats, bars, etc. were probably lost in maybe the '30s? I never had...

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Thanks for the link, Gary! larmo- I do like the chainwheels and the clean lines on it- just wish I knew who made it so I could hunt a badge and make it more correct. Probably going to try and pull together a set of rat traps if I can find four with matched/complementary circle cut outs to...

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Thanks for the suggestion! We are down to one bike shop around here- a long-time one, though. Will see what they can do. Finally spent some time taking things apart today- got everything off and out of the frame so I can get at the hard to reach bits with the acetone. On closer inspection...

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Tandem project hasn't progressed very far- waiting on wood rims and need to figure out what spoke length will fit. Going to get some leather to try my hand at restoring the (later) seats. Handlebars will do until I find a period pair. Still some white paint to get rid off and need to break...

    Va Beach swapmeet....maybe?

Congrats to her on the win! Tabitha's got the fenders, chainguard, and rack chrome cleaned up pretty nice on the Flightliner- handlebars are a little better but still rough. Date on it is 58-62, correct? (since 63 was Sears badging, not J.C. Higgins). Think there's any hope of finding...

What to tell Stutzman and what Spokes to get?

So what should I be looking at given the specs listed at Phil Wood for example? Straight Pull: 14 and 15 ga. (1.8 and 2.0mm) Straight Gauge: 12, 13, 14, and 15 ga. (1.8, 2.0, 2.3, and 2.6mm) Single Butted: 2.3-2.0 Double Butted: 2.0-1.8-2.0 (270 and 310mm blanks) 1/2" and 5/8" nipples...

What to tell Stutzman and what Spokes to get?

Got some cash to spend again and want to order 28-inch wood rims from Stutzman's in Ohio. I had already ordered Amsterdam Electras for the project and, being new to the hobby I need to know how to specify what I need to the rim maker. Clincher-type and be sure to put valve hole across from the...

    Cleaning White Handle Bar Grips

Or Simple Green.. I was surprised when the maker of the whitewalls i have on my car told me to use that instead of the Bleche-White. He claimed the Westley's wasn't good for the rubber in the long run. Might be good to consider for grips that see a lot of skin oils etc. as well

    Va Beach swapmeet....maybe?

Sounds like a good first ride for my tandem wip:) 6th works for me - just not the weekend before

    King of all bikes

Was this the bike given by 'Diamond Jim' Brady to Lillian Russell? It is mentioned in the Bowery Boys (NYC history podcast). http://theboweryboys.blogspot.com/2012/11/bicycle-mania-story-of-new-york-on-two.html

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

Also- still looking for handlebars. I don't want to put much into them in case I find out what sort it originally came with but would like to find some that at least aren't too modern-looking. Only two I've found on ebay are from a 60s Huffy Daisy tandem. They'd be only 35 shipped but not liking...

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

straight shot from hole for bottom of fender to hole for upper mount of fender is 14.5 inches. From the bottom hole to the top tube of the bike is 19 inches. I ordered new wood rims and Amsterdam tires and I have a feeling the fit might be too tight with the new 28" wheels and fatter tires...

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

I don't know that mine is taller..at least looking at angles/counting spokes. Could you measure along the center of the fender from the bottom screw to the cutouts?

Ah- no worries then. Just wanted to be sure I didn't do something wrong. Thanks!

trouble with Wheelmen registration? I've tried for a few days now to register at the Wheelmen- never got a reply/confirmation. Sent a message to their contact address and nothing. Do they only update members weekly? Woud like to do more research over there

And what does your work space look like? THE BIKE SHOP...YOURS!

Agreed on railing. How about master linking a bunch of beater chains together with sprockets/hub at top, lift cable and cradle, and crank with handle at the bottom? :) *goes back to Rube Goldberg land*

WTB Handlebars and 28" Rims for TOC Tandem

Alternately, I have also been looking at the Sacro Bosco 'Roubaix' rims but would then still need 28" spokes and (ideally) period hubs. I noticed the Roubaix included tandems in its applications- would like the wheelset to bear the weight of two tall riders with ease (the Amsterdam tires on...

Mystery Tandem Project (similar to Orient/Pierce/American)

okozzy- no, haven't been on wheelmen but thanks for the pic- looks close! The frame on mine seems like it would be the logical simplification eliminating the rear steering and I don't see any brackets for the spoon brake. Fat Tire Trader- I'll have to see how I feel about it when I finish...
