One of my favourite stories was in the papers a few years back. At a funeral in some south American country... big event, lots of mourners, the deceased suddenly sat up in front of the congregation and shouted "I'M ALIVE!!!". Wonderful. Except for her mother who had a dodgy heart and died of a...
Okay I had a root around tonight and I've got two of the trigger you're after... The 3 or 4 speed, not just 4. I can take photos tomorrow if you're interested?
4 speed trigger!
4 speed triggers are very rare and tend to fetch big money, but i've got one for sale on ebay at the moment that could be what you're looking for.

I've just come by a box of assorted vintage English bicycle parts including rod brake parts, spindles etc. I can't form a complete set from them, so if there are any individual rod brake parts you need let me know!
Patina... shmatina...
First, my fetish is decals. Love em... I love seeing authentic 60 year old decals on a bike that have survived for so long :)
On the other hand, patina? All that does is screams "RESTORATION" loudly in my ear. Yep, it's signs of a bikes past life, which is why it's...
I've had so many questions and offers for this bike that I've decided to cash out... In terms of an English bicycle, it's the very rarest of the rare...

If anyone from the Cabe would like to make an offer or ask questions...
I don't actually have anything to say in response to the above quote, but I thought that it caused such a stir the first time around that I'd rekindle it again
Well from what I've read it's a 30 inch frame, and that's big!!! It could be military, it could be anything, but look again and consider it's got standard 26 inch wheels and the height of it will become easier to see... You'd need to be a TALL soldier to ride it!
How dare you accuse English people of needing to take vast quantities of alcohol with us wherever we go... I'm offended. What's the point in us carting around an entire minibar when you could fit an entire crate of whisky in there? ;-)
Oh... I've given myself a headache. Right!!! Now tell me this doesn't look seriously similar...
Ebay bike...
1933 BSA Trichrome Special.
It's got a different trigger and light... but that's a seriously close match...
This is the problem... everyone loves it, but what the hell is it? :-/
It's got a very Rudge looking rear end... especially 1920's models... but it's got Phillips type brakes which Rudge didn't use... there are no frame numbers or identification marks, which means it's... umm... rare!
Now...
Now I'm good with English bikes, but I've been trying to help ID this and it's beating me... any clues??

My wife's 1940 Norman, nearly restored

I really hate not having an input on this... but here's a little article I found that may make you go "Oh wow!!!"...

What's interesting, is that it's a 1961 Raleigh bike (although not a Gazelle) that seems to date from 1961, and...
That's a good point. Prices. The only Wrights I've had dealings with are the type you see on my bikes, most band on the bikes, but the one on the 1950 I paid about £20 ($36) for. In good condition that's about a ballpark figure for that type, so you've definitely had a bargain either way :-)
I've given up wondering which forum to post this in, so BST it is :-) I'm at the stage with my website now (address below) where I have ample parts to start a 'parts' section properly. This leaves a couple of options. I could list things, seeing as most are quite small and not worth much like...
I finally after two months got around to picking up a 2ft long box full of 50's English bike parts that I paid £20 for... then it turned out that he had 5 old English bikes, fairly rotten, but restorable/partable... so bought them. Then had to go to pick up another bike that I won on ebay last...
Let me know if you need any parts, I've got a ton of Raleigh stuff! I made a deal with a guy today and ended up with a 2ft long box full of rod brake parts, 6 Raleigh's, 1 Triumph, a Humber, a Phillips, and a couple of others for less money than you'd believe possible
Okay guys, explain this to a non-American. To me, it's a rusty bike that would cost a fortune to restore, but does (I'm assuming) have some original parts. Today I got a deal on 12 1950's rod brake bicycles for half the price of that... so what makes that so rare?
Right! I'm moving to Holland. So what happens to all of these bikes?? I'm guessing that very few get returned to the owners, so are they sold? Scrapped?
Stunning bike!!! Somebody told me a few years back that a couple of times a year they dredge the canals, and you see lots of Dutch bicycles sat along the side of the road that had been thrown into the water. Is that true, or were they joking?
I've been to Holland a few times, and...
History...
Honestly? Not a bloody lot. I rate their saddles highly! I've got bikes with Brooks, Lycett, Dunlop and Wrights, and Wrights are the ones that I prefer using because I just find them a far more comfortable shape and softer leather... but anyway, what I do know (and it's not a lot!)...
Interesting photos... I've actually got three, but they're in the garage and won't be going in there for a week or so and don't have any photos on my computer of them but here's a couple of photos of mine:-
1950 Norman Light Roadster.
1954 Norman
Both of these are the 40's/50's style...
If it's a leather one like a Brooks, then it'll be 40's-60's and was found on many English bicycles. If you have a look at my albums, both the 1950 and 1954 Norman bikes have Wrights saddles fitted :) I actually prefer them over Brooks.
Interesting about the cotter tool... Sounds like just a properly made version of what I use. I get the other crank (or a spare one, or anything with a hole!) and put it over the end of the cotter. Tighten a G clamp around it, a couple of turns and crack, it comes out. Usually. After that...
Oh come on guys... we could have had him going there and said it was some really obscure element that's only found with the assistance of lesser known tribes in the south American rainforest...
But yeah, nickel ;)
I just called up my powdercoat company who have done quite a few of my bikes, and they said it depends what you're looking for. Durable, yep, shiny, yep, but it looks like chrome that's been breathed on so doesn't quite match the fees shine of the real thing.
Pads are easy! I've got loads laying around! If you don't mind a used set (but still okay to ride) I'll send you a set for the cost of the postage. PM me if you're interested anyway, but I'll try getting some new ones in!
Up/down... Grading
I'm pleased it's useful! In terms of changing from cable to rod, sure, it's possible, but the costs would put me off. I've got a supplier that I'll be using soon to get brand new complete sets that will be FAR cheaper than what's available at the moment, but until then you'd...
Okay, opinions needed :)
I've spent a LONG time tonight writing out a guide to rod brakes. When I started out in this hobby I couldn't find information anywhere, so I wanted to produce a guide on my site. Can you please check it out with suggestions/comments, what needs to be improved or if...
Light!
The three I have with lights are these...
This one's a 1937, the light is wartime and was originally battery powered.
The other more common one that you'll often find associated with bikes is this type:-
This type's is dynamo powered, with a picture of the rear hub. The...
Norman
This one of mine...
Was powder coated. You can see loads of photos of it in my album "1940 Norman". It's a GREAT flaw-free finish, but has two massive drawbacks. Firstly, powdercoating's thicker than paint which means that it's blurred the frame number quite badly. It's still...
If I remember right, it was a Vickers Vanguard... Might have been a Vickers Viscount. Down the road from me is a small air museum with about a dozen cockpits you can get in :-)
