your Phoenix is a post 1900 American Bicycle Company built. Stover sold his bicycle concerns to the ABC conglomerate in 1899. About 300 small bike builders existed at the end of the 1890s. Mr. Pope started buying bicycle companies to limit competion in 1898. At first he merged 42 of them into...
I wrote a check for $35 on May 23, 2013 and sent it in with my app to join. Paul was president at the time I think. It was cashed on July 15, 2013. I never heard a thing back. Emailed numerous times. Mentioned it the following year to the Michigan chapter president at the 2014 Ann Arbor show...
1896 Phoenix Model A Thoroughbred Racer by Stover Bicycle Mfg. Co. of Freeport, Ill. Here are some pics of it restored and unrestored original. All the nickel is original. It hung in a barn in Ortonville Twp., MI for 95+ years before the the guy who found it who had it for 2 years sold it to me.

Such a common bike. Nothing to cry over.
this looks late teens or early 20s by the chainring, fenders, camel back frame, ornate brass head badge. how do you come up with the 30's? just curious.
if those grips are wooden coke bottle grips or the black coke bottle grips, they are original. it could have also come with leather wrapped wood grips like the ones Dave sells on this site.
looks like late 40s before 1948. looks like a special brand or jobber bike from Rollfast. handlebars, grips, neck, rear reflector on fender, and seat are later replacements.

comes with a wheel and even has the missing convex cone washer that seems to be missing on most examples. costs less than you would normally pay for the complete hub without the wheel. normally costs 200+ for...
I've found the pre-1900 ads, 1900, and 1901. I have been able to locate the bike ads for Hawthorne bikes 1916+ up to the 1970's. I'm looking for classic wards hawthorne bike catalogs and ads scans for the years of 1902 through 1915. Any help would be appreciated if you could help me find these...
1896 Phoenix Model A Thunderbird by Stover Bicycle Mfg Co of Freeport, Ill. In the baggie taped to the bars is the original lapel pin that came with the bike.
this badge I have found on all hawthorne deluxe models 1917 and up, and they have truss forks with the bent top bar or staight top bar (which mine has).
did you actually mount this to a bike and spin the bike wheel 72 revolutions to get your answer. My guess is the striker will have to hit the cog on the cyclometer to make the cog turn a full 16 revolutions at its axis.
ceramic bead blast lightly @ 40 psi to remove rust scale only. Go to the buffing area and use the bristle wheel to shiny finish. Finish by buffing them out on the cloth wheel, with some buffing compound, to mirror finish. It was free because I did it at work. Took me 30 minutes and i was able...
There is one more difference, the mounting bracket between the 2 versions. The one with the patent date pictured on the left in the earlier one. The one on the right is 1896+. I have one of the latter which I restored, pictured on the bottom.
I acquired a another Murray-built tanklight bicycle while in Ann Arbor. This time it is a 1965 JCPenny's Foremost. The tanklight herd is now at 4.
as bought and just unloaded at home.
new white walls, a cleaner set of rims, the right seat, and a RC radio (also purchased at Ann Arbor)...
had a great time shootin the poop with you Patric and meeting Scott. Missed catfish who was there and seemed to be incognito. The absence of Bike had a profound effect on me.
I know how you feel man. Great feeling isn't it? I have the 1896 Stover Phoenix Model A next to the Elgin in the background in your pic. I won "best early classic" 3 years in a row (an Ann Arbor show record). I was told last year I was the 1st person to win 2 years in a row with the same bike. I...
Just picked up another middleweight horn tanklight bike at Ann Arbor which I think is a Murray-built 1965 JC Pennys Foremost. The serial on the rear left dropout is M05 .54X24 522979. Please confirm. Thanks.
that type of tag was common in the fifties. check out Quincy bicycle licenses on ebay or better yet on google.

that scene took place in the 1890s so in order for the bike to be "period correct" it would have to be older than 1900, but then again, movies are never "spot on" when trying to deliver "historical accuracy".
