That is KEWEL!! It's a LOT harder finding other American made bikes other than Schwinn in decent shape because fewer numbers of them were sold, and more importantly, their survival rate was much lower as they were not as well made. Kids had a tendency to treat these bikes like trash and...
I live about an hour's drive south of there off of PA Rte 272, near the Brownstown/Lititz exit of US Rte 222 in Akron, PA. I still have several bikes I would like to sell, including my violet 1967 Collegiate, kool lemon 1973 Collegiate, and an Opaque Blue ladies 1974 Varsity Tourist for...
Bump.
Violet 1967 and Kool Lemon 1973 are still available. Make me a decent offer.
I am about 45 minutes south of Trexlertown on PA State route 272 just off of US Route 222 Brownstown exit in Lancaster County in Akron, PA.
Will not ship.
1968 Coppertone sold. The violet 1967 and kool lemon 1974 are still up for grabs. These are not perfect bikes, but they are in above average shape for original condition bikes. In other words they are not junk, but they are not mint either.
Tim, that is the correct seat for that bike. Speedsters were a few steps down from the Corvettes and Jags offered at that time. And as such, had lower grade parts like this seat. Probably has the cheaper block pedals also instead of the deluxe bow pedals that came with the aforementioned deluxe...
I live an hour south of Trexlertown on PA Route 272 which parallels Route 222 in Akron, PA, so I believe I'm 2 hours out of your way. Don't think it will work.
Wish I could go. Living only about an hour away from the place, but with recent retina reattachment surgery to my left eye, I really cannot drive for any length of time for more than 15 minutes right now, as it is still healing. I have several Schwinn lightweights that I reconditioned that I...
I (and this is just my opinion, now) believe this bike would look better with Westwind blackwall tires than white because of all the white paintwork that is in the fenders. It's your bike!
That rear fender does not look that bad, and with stainless steel. some scratches can be buffed out. How good are you with a wood ball and a mallet to pop dents out? That is one thing I taught myself how to do with my stainless steel bike fenders was massaging dents out very carefully using just...
From what I see, the bike is looking great (I don't see that good anymore). The correct carrier for this bike, beings it is a 1964 is what I call a "Square end" 4 reflector wire rack . It has the same shape ends as the 2 reflector rack like is on your red Panther, but with 4 reflectors, like...
Three Chicago Schwinn Collegiates available. Will NOT ship. Must pick up. Violet 1967- $350.00. Coppertone 1968- $400.00. Kool Lemon 1973-$275.00 These bikes are clean, detailed and are in absolutely perfect working order. I repeat WILL NOT SHIP. South central Pennsylvania. Each bike has a...
NO!! Do NOT use acetone!! It will dissolve the original paint off the bike as well as the paint you are trying to remove. Schwinn paint is baked on , but acetone pretty much can dissolve anything that is not metal, so if I were you, do NOT use acetone. if it does not remove your original paint...
It's going to get the Broke Bastard's boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits treatment. No more abrasive work, I know from experience with this bike that any more abrasive treatments including the finest grading steel wool will remove paint, and I am not willing to do this.
Ok, you guys caught me in time. But then again that is why I asked youse guys first. I didn't want to be the idiot to destroy something that was 75 years in the making by a few moments of a boneheaded maneuver. I'll try the BLO later on this spring and summer as part of the project of cleaning...
I removed as much rust as I can dare to remove without cutting into the 75 year old paint. I can't afford to take any more abrasives to the bike other than I did wet sanding the thing 5 years ago. After I did that, I found that it removed too much of the beige paint from the fender wedges and...
Basically, it sounds like a good idea, but I want something that is not high maintenance. Once and done is what I am after, as I feel I may not have much time left that I can deal with this before I turn the bike over to the next steward, and let them take care of it after me. But I do want to...
The wax would just collect around the rust blisters that I could not remove. This paint is so old that any attempt at waxing it would remove too much detail, also as well.
What is boiled linseed?
I've been thinking about taking my 1947 Westfield built JC Higgins tank bike totally apart to clearcoat the original weathered and lightly surface rusted paint to try and preserve the paint in that state. That is because about 5 years ago, when I went to wet sand the old paint with a sanding...
Acetone may be your cheapest and best bet. It will not harm chrome plating, but if you go this route, remove the fenders from the bike before doing so as acetone will also dissolve the paint on the frame as well. Acetone will also dissolve certain plastics with impunity as well. You need to be...
You have the chainring on backwards, like everyone else is saying. Flip it around before you go any farther with assembly. I believe you will have chain clearance issues when shifting gears if you don't.
Zip ties because I spent a lot of time and money repainting this bike. Original style clips would have scratched the sh** out of my nice multi hundred dollar paint job, and I was not willing to let that happen.
The way the CABE is set up, it can be posted in either place. The bike is a middleweight, and it's also a Schwinn. This is a catchall place for posting about all middleweight bikes.
