What bike did you ride today?

None. I'm retired. I don't have to ride a bike today, but I do like to look at them.
  2. Schwinndemonium

    The Beast - 1968

That is KEWEL!! It's a LOT harder finding other American made bikes other than Schwinn in decent shape because fewer numbers of them were sold, and more importantly, their survival rate was much lower as they were not as well made. Kids had a tendency to treat these bikes like trash and...

Kutztown Bicycle Swap Meet April ,6th,7th 2024 Because of the weather we are going to Saturday and Sunday only.

Ross Apollo! There's a name and bike I have not seen in AGES. When I was a kid in the mid 1970's, those were everywhere. Them and Raleigh Choppers!

Kutztown Bicycle Swap Meet April ,6th,7th 2024 Because of the weather we are going to Saturday and Sunday only.

I live about an hour's drive south of there off of PA Rte 272, near the Brownstown/Lititz exit of US Rte 222 in Akron, PA. I still have several bikes I would like to sell, including my violet 1967 Collegiate, kool lemon 1973 Collegiate, and an Opaque Blue ladies 1974 Varsity Tourist for...

    (Still here!) Three Collegiates

Bump. Violet 1967 and Kool Lemon 1973 are still available. Make me a decent offer. I am about 45 minutes south of Trexlertown on PA State route 272 just off of US Route 222 Brownstown exit in Lancaster County in Akron, PA. Will not ship.

    Schwinn Paint color help

Baby schit yellow. I'm glad I'm not the only one who uses this term to describe Chevy 1970's yellow. LoL!!

  8. Schwinndemonium

    Violet 65-66 Collegiate production numbers

    Mine already is roadworthy.
  10. Schwinndemonium

    (Still here!) Three Collegiates

1968 Coppertone sold. The violet 1967 and kool lemon 1974 are still up for grabs. These are not perfect bikes, but they are in above average shape for original condition bikes. In other words they are not junk, but they are not mint either.

    1967 Schwinn Fastback

Ok, I thought it may have been just a tad too dark, but my eyes have not been working too good lately.
  14. Schwinndemonium

    1967 Schwinn Fastback

Looks great. Is that the blue paint we talked about earlier? Jim.

    Green Schwinn Speedster

I see this thread is older than I anticipated and you already removed the lock.
  16. Schwinndemonium

    Green Schwinn Speedster

Maybe you can take that seat to a locksmith and he may be able to pick it for you, saving that lock. It looks vintage to the bike.
  17. Schwinndemonium

    Green Schwinn Speedster

Tim, that is the correct seat for that bike. Speedsters were a few steps down from the Corvettes and Jags offered at that time. And as such, had lower grade parts like this seat. Probably has the cheaper block pedals also instead of the deluxe bow pedals that came with the aforementioned deluxe...

I Wish I still had this Bike

I'd say that about my Panther, but I got it back again.
  19. Schwinndemonium

Bearing Cap thing stuck on head tube

Sounds like it is cross threaded on there with boogered up threads. That thing should just spin off, normally.

Vintage 1950 Schwinn Jaguar Mark iV Bicycle

The Mark IV Jaguar was built from 1959 to 1962. Middleweight bikes were not around in 1950 which the Mark IV Jag is.
  21. Schwinndemonium

    Let's see your black bikes

The only black bike I have left. I've been downsizing. 1959 Schwinn Mark IV Jaguar 3 speed I have owned since July of 1978.

Who is going to Trexlertown Annual Fall Swap Meet ???

I live an hour south of Trexlertown on PA Route 272 which parallels Route 222 in Akron, PA, so I believe I'm 2 hours out of your way. Don't think it will work.
  23. Schwinndemonium

Who is going to Trexlertown Annual Fall Swap Meet ???

Wish I could go. Living only about an hour away from the place, but with recent retina reattachment surgery to my left eye, I really cannot drive for any length of time for more than 15 minutes right now, as it is still healing. I have several Schwinn lightweights that I reconditioned that I...

    1962 American

I (and this is just my opinion, now) believe this bike would look better with Westwind blackwall tires than white because of all the white paintwork that is in the fenders. It's your bike!
  25. Schwinndemonium

    1962 American

    Grips and seat?
  26. Schwinndemonium

    Off with the dust

Yup! I got to let go of some of mine as well. The dust on some of them is 3 feet thick. You can't take them with you.
  27. Schwinndemonium

    1964 Jaguar

That rear fender does not look that bad, and with stainless steel. some scratches can be buffed out. How good are you with a wood ball and a mallet to pop dents out? That is one thing I taught myself how to do with my stainless steel bike fenders was massaging dents out very carefully using just...

    1964 Jaguar

From what I see, the bike is looking great (I don't see that good anymore). The correct carrier for this bike, beings it is a 1964 is what I call a "Square end" 4 reflector wire rack . It has the same shape ends as the 2 reflector rack like is on your red Panther, but with 4 reflectors, like...

    Removing spraypaint from bike

NO!! Do NOT use acetone!! It will dissolve the original paint off the bike as well as the paint you are trying to remove. Schwinn paint is baked on , but acetone pretty much can dissolve anything that is not metal, so if I were you, do NOT use acetone. if it does not remove your original paint...

Looking for a BLUE original Jaguar Mark IV

I sold it to Tim S earlier this year.
  33. Schwinndemonium

1961 Jaguar and a bit of a story to go with it.

I love the endearing term for these gorgeous seats, "ass hatchets"!

Clearcoating over original weathered patina paint pros and cons.

It's going to get the Broke Bastard's boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits treatment. No more abrasive work, I know from experience with this bike that any more abrasive treatments including the finest grading steel wool will remove paint, and I am not willing to do this.
  35. Schwinndemonium

Clearcoating over original weathered patina paint pros and cons.

Ok, you guys caught me in time. But then again that is why I asked youse guys first. I didn't want to be the idiot to destroy something that was 75 years in the making by a few moments of a boneheaded maneuver. I'll try the BLO later on this spring and summer as part of the project of cleaning...
  36. Schwinndemonium

Clearcoating over original weathered patina paint pros and cons.

I removed as much rust as I can dare to remove without cutting into the 75 year old paint. I can't afford to take any more abrasives to the bike other than I did wet sanding the thing 5 years ago. After I did that, I found that it removed too much of the beige paint from the fender wedges and...
  37. Schwinndemonium

Clearcoating over original weathered patina paint pros and cons.

Basically, it sounds like a good idea, but I want something that is not high maintenance. Once and done is what I am after, as I feel I may not have much time left that I can deal with this before I turn the bike over to the next steward, and let them take care of it after me. But I do want to...
  38. Schwinndemonium

Clearcoating over original weathered patina paint pros and cons.

The wax would just collect around the rust blisters that I could not remove. This paint is so old that any attempt at waxing it would remove too much detail, also as well. What is boiled linseed?
  39. Schwinndemonium

Clearcoating over original weathered patina paint pros and cons.

I've been thinking about taking my 1947 Westfield built JC Higgins tank bike totally apart to clearcoat the original weathered and lightly surface rusted paint to try and preserve the paint in that state. That is because about 5 years ago, when I went to wet sand the old paint with a sanding...

    Tire swap today

Acetone may be your cheapest and best bet. It will not harm chrome plating, but if you go this route, remove the fenders from the bike before doing so as acetone will also dissolve the paint on the frame as well. Acetone will also dissolve certain plastics with impunity as well. You need to be...

    1965 Violet Collegiate

You have the chainring on backwards, like everyone else is saying. Flip it around before you go any farther with assembly. I believe you will have chain clearance issues when shifting gears if you don't.
  42. Schwinndemonium

    Schwinn super sport color?

Like GTs58 said, it is the rare color called by Schwinn as Opaque Green. It was only offered for 2 or 3 years in the first half of the 1970's.
  43. Schwinndemonium

    What if Schwinn built this....

That's because I have purdie legs.
  44. Schwinndemonium

    What if Schwinn built this....

Yes it is me about 10 years ago.
  45. Schwinndemonium

    What if Schwinn built this....

Zip ties because I spent a lot of time and money repainting this bike. Original style clips would have scratched the sh** out of my nice multi hundred dollar paint job, and I was not willing to let that happen.
  46. Schwinndemonium

    What if Schwinn built this....

The way the CABE is set up, it can be posted in either place. The bike is a middleweight, and it's also a Schwinn. This is a catchall place for posting about all middleweight bikes.
