I have a Spaceliner and I love riding it. It's smooth as heck, and once you get going on it the weight just sort of carries you along. I am a little amused by the description of it as "rare and valuable", though. I thought they were fairly common. I paid $40 for mine but I put a lot of sweat...
There are no numbers or identifying marks on it anywhere, except for a very old service sticker. That makes me think it has been repainted but if so they did a pretty good job, it's smooth and shiny like a factory finish. Not house paint. ;) I bought it ten years ago from a guy selling bikes out...
So what are those holes for, anyway? Are they just from the manufacturing process? I can't see what purpose they would serve. I guess if I had a basket on the front I could secure it really well. ;)
I know there's not a lot to go on. It looks like it had fenders at one point and maybe a rear rack. There's the weird holes on the inside of those double bottom bars, I have no idea what those are for. I wonder if I could find a serial number on the bottom of the bracket if I took some paint...
So, I have this old beater bike that I got ages ago just for transportation. I've always been drawn to vintage styles of all kinds and this bike appealed to me. It's been repainted and has no identifying marks. It might even be a relatively modern knock off. Does anyone have any guesses as to...
While I understand how they make some people cringe, I have no problem with ratrods. Especially when care is taken to preserve the individual parts. I cracked up at the photo of the chain. :)
That's a really cool bike. I'm surprised nobody bought it just to stab it or burn it or whatever. ;)
My daughter and I are the bike riders, the guys ride occasionally but not like us. I prefer men's bikes because generally the design appeals to me more. My daughter rides a girl's bike because...
Don't hold back, fatbar. ;)
The critical mass rides in my town fell apart about 5 years ago, due to cyclist/motorist antagonism. There are silly heads on both sides, for sure. CM just got resurrected last summer and it seems to be going well. Nobody is being a jerk, yet. Hopefully it will stay...
My work is about 3 miles away, and it takes me about 10 minutes to ride my fixed gear bike there. So I guess that's about 20 MPH. I never really thought about it before, hm.
Ha ha! :)
I was riding my old beater fixed gear bike on a paved path with my kids last fall, and we were just cruising along when my daughter said, "Mommy there's someone behind you." It was a spandex Breaking Away dude, just kind of idling along behind us as we pretty much blocked the whole...
This has been a very enlightening thread. ;)
I have one restored bike (yup one lonely bike) and one old beater that I ride a lot and lives in the yard, along with the kids' bikes. (I know, it's bad.) My husband's problem with the restored bike is that I keep it in the front hall, due to our...
jd56 - I am so sorry this happened. :( I don't even know what to say. What kind of silly head does something like that? That black painted bike makes me mad. I can only imagine how you feel about it. I wish I lived near you, I'd help you take that black paint off. Did you figure out everything...
This bike is for sale at a local thrift store for $45. I'm considering buying it and fixing it up for my 8 year old daughter. Can someone tell me more about this bike?
No, this was a really tiny swap in Kentucky. I wouldn't have had any hope for it at all except last time it was pretty good. I guess it's hit or miss. I have little kids so it's hard for me to travel to bike meets, unfortunately. I kind of have to make do with what's around here, which is not much.
Me too. Does anyone have more links to cool FB bike pages? I spend a lot of time on FB. :o If you don't want another time sucker in your life, stay away from FB.
Yeah the scrolling on the 38 is awesome. I especially like the black scrolling on the cream background. I lack the terminology to talk about what I like about the 35-37. The pointy part on the front fork where the wheel attaches, and the way the frame swoops back past the rear wheel and then the...
Nickinator - I already commented on how beautiful the bottom bike is, in another thread. But holy cow - that top bike is gorgeous! (I'm just learning about Bluebirds.) The lines on that frame are amazing. What is the fender ornament?
The last time I went to this velo swap, there were tons of old bikes. Tandem bikes, motorized bikes, muscle bikes, etc. OK, maybe not tons. But at least 30 or so, which is pretty good for a small velo swap on a rainy day. This time (also a rainy day, apparently it rains every time they have this...
Can I ask a stupid question? Why would you remove an original (presumably distressed) finish, apply a new one, and then distress it? Is most of the original paint just gone? Are you trying to match new parts like fenders or something to an old frame?
Very cool! The tubes on my Spaceliner were fused to the insides of the tires. I couldn't save the tires either, they were all cracked and nasty. I'm glad yours survived.
Thanks so much, BrentP. I have read the USR and found it very useful. I appreciate the time you take to organize and share this information, it's especially helpful to people like me who are just learning about old bikes. :) I haven't started working on the case yet (that makes me sound like a...
I'll try it. Is it basically oxalic acid? I wanted to try that (in the form of wood bleach) on the Spaceliner but I have kids and dogs and no garage, so it wasn't feasible to leave a big tub of it lying around for several days. It would probably work really well on the tray though. I think...
Thanks for the tip MaxGlide. :)
jd56 - when I first read your post I thought it said a Spaceliner went for $68 on ebay. I was like, wow that's cheap - then I realized you were talking about just the lens and I was like, wow that's expensive! Ha ha! Well - there's a velo swap in a few weeks...
No kidding! Wow - all this time I thought it had two little cone shaped lights that kind of look like rocket boosters. Huh. Thanks for the info! :)
I saw that seat online, it was pretty much the only one that kind of met the criteria I'm looking for but I dunno, I can't explain it but I just...
Thanks guys. :) It still has some rust on it, especially in the little crevices that are hard to reach. But I got tired of scraping and I just wanted to ride it. It's still somewhat of a work in progress.
Here's a picture of the battery case. Now that I really look at it I think it might...
Last fall I got this old bike for $40 at a velo swap. I didn't know a lot about old bikes - still don't, but I know more now than I did then. I think this Spaceliner is from 1964. I spent all winter scraping rust off it. It has new rims and tires - the old ones were really shot. Also a new...
