    Old Schwinn bicycle shop

The building has finally been sold. They are now advertising on Craigslist that everything in the building is now for sale. http://memphis.craigslist.org/bik/5149280990.html

    Another bike to ID

According to the info that you linked to, 1969 would have been M9 so M4 is 1974.
  3. Stinky_Sullivan

    Another bike to ID

Doesn't the reflector in the spokes indicate the minimum manufacture date? When were those first required on bikes?
  4. Stinky_Sullivan

    Another bike to ID

I knew the chain ring looked Murray. After looking at that site, I'm certain it is. The X7 at the end of the serial number indicates BF Goodrich which we already know it is.

    Another bike to ID

A friend's wife has a bike her grandmother used to ride. It's 60's or 70's based on the banana seat and plastic basket. The little old lady didn't have a driver's license so she rode this bike all over Cincinnati. The ladies granddaughter now has the bike here in Memphis. The serial number is on...

    Master Link question

I don't need the pin to push all the way out. I just need it to push out far enough to disconnect the link which it already has to do. But if I do that on both ends of the link, I can remove the link all together and put it on another chain.
  7. Stinky_Sullivan

    Master Link question

If pressing a pin out then back in is an acceptable, then I can rob a link from another chain to replace the one I cut.
  8. Stinky_Sullivan

    Master Link question

I just need to put the chain back on the bike after having cut a link to get it off. Getting a new chain breaker is a given. But where can I get master links for a 3/32 chain in volume?
  9. Stinky_Sullivan

    Master Link question

I broke my chain tool so I just cut through a link to get the chain off expecting I would just replace it with a master link. What now?
  10. Stinky_Sullivan

    Master Link question

Then how do I put a new chain on the bike?
  11. Stinky_Sullivan

    Master Link question

Can I use a 1/8" master link on a 3/32" chain? I can't seem to find 3/32" master links in volume packaging. Are there any drawbacks to using 2 piece master links?

Need info on a 20's Mead Ranger

But now I need a Racer frame/fork too. What do they look like?
  13. Stinky_Sullivan

Need info on a 20's Mead Ranger

What does the catalog say about those racing bars. They are SWEET! Thanks for the pics.
  14. Stinky_Sullivan

Need info on a 20's Mead Ranger

That's exactly what I needed to know. I'm not too concerned with the fork. All of the catalog pictures of this style frame show it with a truss rod fork and I plan to put one back on it.
  15. Stinky_Sullivan

    Who knows the Mead Rangers?

Vague questions? I thought I was pretty specific. Here are the questions I posted in the last thread that got no responses. Would this bike have had metal clad, wood wheels? How many spokes? What kind of hubs? Are those Torrington handlebars? What about the pedals? We're those questions too...
  16. Stinky_Sullivan

    Who knows the Mead Rangers?

Technically, it's not the wrong fork. It's just not the original fork. It's a period correct replacement fork. Nick-theCut helped determine that as well as the repaint colors. I know a rebuild will be costly but I can handle one part at a time. If everyone were to do as you suggest, this frame...
  17. Stinky_Sullivan

    Who knows the Mead Rangers?

I don't know if I'm building a Dean's bike. I don't know what a Dean's bike is. When I said I don't know anything about these bikes, that was not an understatement. I don't even know what the catalog descriptions are because none of the catalog pictures I have found are clear enough to read...
  18. Stinky_Sullivan

    Who knows the Mead Rangers?

I didn't start this thread to bash anyone or this site. I started it to find someone that would answer some direct questions. For the record, you didn't respond in the last thread. If there was any info you could have contributed, you didn't and that's fine. Nick and Moto replied and posted...
  19. Stinky_Sullivan

    Who knows the Mead Rangers?

Yes, that is the thread. 11 total post, 6 are mine, 4 are from Nick-theCut. The pictures were helpful but questions I asked went unanswered. I figured a direct Q&A would be better. I've had threads in the lightweight section get zero responses. Many times, this place seems very clicky.
  20. Stinky_Sullivan

    Who knows the Mead Rangers?

My internet access is strictly through my Kindle which makes many tasks difficult. I did get a PM from a CABEr though.
  21. Stinky_Sullivan

    Who knows the Mead Rangers?

I don't have much luck getting info about my Mead. I guess you guys don't care too much for kindergarten questions. If any of you are knowledgeable enough about a mid 20's Mead Ranger and is willing to answer some detailed and probably elementary questions via PM, please let me know. I'm not...

    Chain sizes

For the purposes of identifying the right chain, when you say 6, 7, and 8 speed, are you referring to the total number of gear combinations or just the number of gears in the cassette?
  23. Stinky_Sullivan

Cheap way to get a bike professionally painted.

This is just a thought..... There's an auto body shop around the corner from my house. If I wasn't too picky about the color, I wonder if they'd shoot a frame and fork the next time they shoot a car? I think I'm gonna have to stop by and ask.

    Bike specific tools

Say it isn't so. One of my other hobbies is vintage tools. Proto and Williams are among the best. There are too many others out there to molest fine tools like that. Vlchek are a dime a dozen, good quality, and American made. They're vintage too but much more plentiful than Proto and Williams.
  25. Stinky_Sullivan

    Bike specific tools

I'm getting the bike stand Rivnut recommended. http://thecabe.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=354203 I have tons of spare wrenches but I don't know if they're large enough. What sizes do they come in?
  26. Stinky_Sullivan

Question about fork parts and disassembly.

I picked up some bikes the other day. They're not vintage but I'm sure the construction is similar to the older stuff. This bike is Chinese made and I see a lot of inferior parts. Those will get replaced. As for the fork, the dust boots have deteriorated and I'd like to replace them. In order...

    Brake cable housing

Knowing that it's a friction reducing lining is good enough but thanks for the additional info.
  28. Stinky_Sullivan

    Bike specific tools

I've got plenty of tools. I do most of my own auto repair. However, I have few tools that are specific to bike repair. The only thing I have so far if a Park FR-1 freewheel remover. I know I'll need cone wrenches. What sizes do they come in? If I don't but a "complete set", what sizes will I...
  29. Stinky_Sullivan

    Brake cable housing

What are lined cable housings lined with? Why would you not use a lined cable?
  30. Stinky_Sullivan

    Cassette removal tools

I didn't realize cassette and freewheel were mutually exclusive. My road bikes are a '72 Rollfast probably Columbia built and an '83 Schwinn Le Tour. Isn't the cassette the gear cluster on the hub and freewheel is a characteristic of the hub?
  31. Stinky_Sullivan

    Reliable Mercury Murray database???

It's not as expensive as you might think. I checked bikeflight and it will cost me $47 to ship a bike from NJ to Memphis.
  32. Stinky_Sullivan

    Cassette removal tools

Is there a list somewhere of all the different tools for removing cassettes?
  33. Stinky_Sullivan

Refurbishing a '69 Columbia Big Supper seat.

Don't do like I did though. When you get ready to take that cover off, make sure there's not an active wasp nest under the pan somewhere. There was on mine. There was only one wasp and it was small but it got me on the finger between the nail and the first knuckle. That sh*t hurts.
  34. Stinky_Sullivan

    10 speed gear pattern

Shoot me a PM with a pic and a price. I'm not actually building these bikes for anyone specific. I doubt I'll ever get rid of these road bikes. I'm just not building them for me. I hope to offer bikes for rent in one of the historic districts if we get the house there we want. The topic of the...
  35. Stinky_Sullivan

    Bike repair stand

Thanks Rivnut. That's close to the price of the one from Northern Tool.
  36. Stinky_Sullivan

    Bike repair stand

That's what I need but, YOWZA, $165? I'm sure it's worth every dime but that's mot in the budget just yet.
  37. Stinky_Sullivan

    10 speed gear pattern

The build will be what ever the eventual rider wants. That won't be me. Although the bike is tall enough for me, I'm 6', I'm not gonna let anyone see a 350# hairy fat man give himself a wedgie on a road bike. Besides, I have too many bikes needing work to be tweaking the gear ratios on a bike I...
  38. Stinky_Sullivan

Refurbishing a '69 Columbia Big Supper seat.

The cover stretches quite a bit. Pull gently but steadily and the Big opening will widen enough to get the pan through. I suspect in a factory setting, the covers are probably warmed up and perhaps stretched with the help of a machine.
  39. Stinky_Sullivan

    Bike repair stand

Nice stand but the one from Northern Tool is only $55 and has been positively reviewed by a CABEr. I'd really just like to find some place that sells the business end of the stand that I can mount on my own pole. I've never seen a stand up close but I've got an idea of what the clamp is like...
  40. Stinky_Sullivan

    10 speed gear pattern

Pedal downhill? Isn't that an oxymoron?
  41. Stinky_Sullivan

    10 speed gear pattern

Bulldog, I understand that each cog on the cassette translate to a given distance of travel and that distance increases as the chain moves to the next smaller cog on the cassette. What I'm referring to is that the fact that what I've always known as 5th gear, smallest chain ring and smallest...
  42. Stinky_Sullivan

    Bike repair stand

Thanks. That thread not only located an acceptably priced stand, it pointed out an interesting e-book.
  43. Stinky_Sullivan

    Fork repair

The stickers on the seat tube are the same as the ones on my Columbia Sports III so I wouldn't be surprised if it was Columbia made. Search eBay for 1972 Rollfast and you'll find one that's exactly like mine, even the color.
  44. Stinky_Sullivan

    Bike repair stand

I know, this has been discussed before but I can't find the thread. Searching the forum on a Kindle isn't easy. I NEED a bike stand. I prefer cheap but I need something that won't break in a month. I'm not opposed to making my own. Can a "head" be purchased that I can mount on my own post? If...
  45. Stinky_Sullivan

    10 speed gear pattern

I just calculated the gear ratios of all the gears on my 10 speed. The chain ring is a 39/50. The cassette is a 14/17/20/24/28. I haven't ridden a road bike since I was 14 or 15 but I always though you started out on the smallest chain ring and the largest cog, ran through all the cogs in the...
  46. Stinky_Sullivan

    Fork repair

Technically that would work as a patch even if it worked indefinitely. However, the fork would still have the same problem it did before but then I'd have a bent nut also. I'm in no hurry to get this bike on the road. I'd prefer to fix the fork properly so I won't have to damage other hardware...
  47. Stinky_Sullivan

    Evans Colson conversion.

That seat looks small for that frame. Reminds me of that scene in Betelgeuse when Michael Keaton sits next to the African explorer that had his head shrunk.
  48. Stinky_Sullivan

Old JC Higgins Tandem? Help with ID

Can't disagree with that. I would like to clarify that when I said I'd never seen a Higgens tandem, it wasn't to support my position that THIS isn't a Higgens. More precisely, I meant to point out that I don't think there was ever a Higgens double chain ring of that style. Was there EVER a...
  49. Stinky_Sullivan

Refurbishing a '69 Columbia Big Supper seat.

Yep, that was the stuff. I'm gonna do a better job on the refurb though.
  50. Stinky_Sullivan

Selling bikes. I just can't do it.

Every bike I get, I want to keep. I have about 20 bikes now. Only a couple are rideable but I'm working on them. I have one 16" OCC Stingray that I plan to give to a family friend for her son as soon as I get training wheels for it. One of my son's lady friends from college wanted a bike but I...
