I have the same problem
I have a 24" boys bike that needs truss rods. I have bought 3 different pairs off epay. Not one of them fit. I think that the later fifties and sixties rods were longer than the late forties bikes.
I also believe that girls bike were a different length than the boys...
Change the rear sprocket to an 11
It's one louder!
You probably have a New Departure read hub.
They usually have 10 teeth. They do have 11 tooth sprockets.
They can be hard to find but they show up on epay every once and a while.
E
Hard to tell with out a picture
I would guess 900.00 on up.
Unless two people want it and you get a biding war.
Aluminum head lamp may be worth 300 by itself
E
Brake shoes
I remember a post from someone in the southeast that relined schwinn brake shoes.
I'm thinking it was around 70$ or so.
Might be cheaper on epay. I have seen nos shoes for sale.
E
Need picture
I checked my 41 DX the headbadge screws are 2 and 1/4 inches apart. Which was the standard size.
With the roadster graphic maybe Louisville Cycle and Supply?
Ladies schwinn bike
It looks more like early '50s.
Schwinn sold bikes that hardware stores put their head badges on.
Schwinn stopped that around 1952.
The paint scheme is the rams head or shooting star.
If the serial number is under the crank housing it is pre '52
If it is on the rear left...
Prewar
The older CT is Pre war around 1939.
The wood post out front is a guard to keep the
Basket from getting bent when the bike falls over.
Or a cattle guard
E
Not a schwinn dx
Look at the rear tubes.
Schwinn had two welded at the seat post.
That one has one tube.
Has the ears for a drop stand.
1939 DX had then but has a straight down tube.
That one is curved.
Key problem
Hi Wes,
I have a girls Schwinn with a cycle-lock.
The key is fine, the lock turns nicely,but...
the key will not come out of the cylinder.
Is this an easy fix or do I have to send it to you???
You have fixed two other locks for me in the past.
Thanks!
Eric
Fat franks area tight fit but..
They will fit on some schwinns depending on the fenders.
I tried them on a B6 but they rubbed on the underside of the train light.
I put them on a DX but the rim has to be perfectly true not to rub.
Good luck, Happy Christmas!
E
Welcome to the addiction!
Your front wheel is flopped. The drum opens on the right side.
Check epay you can find the break part that fits in the drum.
Wes Pinchot(fender doctor) can fix the locking fork for a very Reasonable price.
Need a picture, but..
It probably is a bike made by Schwinn.
Schwinn sold bikes to lots of hardware stores that put their own head badges on them.
Need a pix to nail down a year.
If it is a DX model, 1939 had the ears for a drop stand.
E
That is a DX.
That is a DX model.
It would have the chain guard that bri has.
It came with many different head badges. BF Goodrich, Planes & Trains, Packard, many different kinds.
With the date you got from the serial number it would probably have cream painted S-2 rims with black pin...
Need picture and serial number
If it is a Schwinn, and the serial number is under the bottom bracket, then your frame is 1952 or older.
Middle weights didn't appear untill the mid fifties.
What does the chain guard look like. Swept wing? Feathers with the circle?
Are you sure the first...
Probably 1946 with the B serial number
Don' t repaint it!
You don' t need the springy thing for the front end.
You have the truss rod front end.
You can have the seat restored. It will be better than a new replacement.
Soak the chain in oil it is still good.
It would have come with Lobdell...
You got really Great deal, but....
I think you got a great deal!!!
But It is not a 1939.
It is a '40 or '41.
1939 had a straight down tube.
Yours is the equipped model.
Probably worth about 900.00.
Post war the wing pattern changed direction.
Great bike.
Eric
46 Dx
Hey Snickle,
Nice DX!
The speedometer you are looking for had a bracket that was held on by the bolt in the goose neck.
That is why there is no trace on the handel bars.
The kick stand you need is a one year only part. Good luck!
I bought one on epay. It was the right tapered end...
That is a not a Hornet
It's a DX.
If you post the serial number someone can narrow down the year.
Curved lower bar is the key.
Looks like girls handle bars.
Do a search for schwinn dx. the pictures will match.
Chrome vs. paint
Fleebay has used ones often. They are cast metal. 60 to 120$. Maybe in the color you need. Don't buy the ones with cracks or battery rot. Some times they are filled with Bondo or JBWeld.
Here is what I have....
I have four DXs and one B6.
Prewar DX blk/wht Pullman head badge. Ser is B25048 under the BB.
Dogleg crank skip tooth sprocket drop stand.
Straight down tube make this a 1939. First year of the DX model.
Post war
Red/tan DX. Packard head badge. Ser is H12380...
How about 1945????
Ok just a few thoughts...
According to the charts on angelfire Schwinn made over 98,000 bikes in 1945.
The charts say that the last serial numbers from 1941 to early 1942 could be A thru I.
What if it was A thru H?
As soon as WWII was over Schwinn may have started up...
I should check more often
Hi Scott,
Thanks for letting the boys play with your cameras!
Conner wanted to let you know that he has an -er at the end of his name.
I know picky picky.
See you on the next ride.
Eric
It' s a DX model
Your Grampa's bike is a DX model. The curved middle tube gives it away.
try this for a picture:

Hi All,
I really want to put MADE IN USA tires on my 1952 Schwinn DX. Schwinn doesn't sell them. Carlisle use to make them but I can't find any.
What do you put on your old bikes if you just want to ride them???
E
Where is the serial number located? Hornets ran from 1951 to 1958. Schwinn moved the serial numbers from under the crank to the left rear drop out in 1952.
1951 serial numbers had 7 digits; the first being a letter.

E
rustyspoke66,
The serial number is on the rear left dropout!; not under the crank housing. Schwinn moved the serial numbers from the crank to the dropout in 1952.
Yes, it looks like a DX.
But what model Scwinn had a curved lower tube in 1952?
The Phantoms and Hornets had either the...
Hi All,
Serial number is on left drop out. E35360. Head badge missing, but the screw holes are 2 3/16" apart. Crank looks Schwinn. Chain guard looks Schwinn post war, but no flat spot for a decal if it's a Hornet or Wasp. Bendix rear hub redband S-7 rim. Troxel seat. The kick stand is a bolt...
