    thanks for the info!

    1955 Jaguar frameset....

I picked up a 1955 Jaguar frameset a few years back and i had forgotten that i had stuffed it into the attic. The wheels that it came with were not the original 3 speed but just single and it didnt have any fenders. I think it used to be red or maroon but the sun faded it so bad it appears...

rims / wheel source for corvette....

I have an old Schwinn. I believe it is a corvette. Its pretty ratted/roached out. Covered in house paint. Racks are gone.....etc. Rims are pretty worthless. Wondering if anyone has a source or recommendation for a 26 steel or even alloy rimset that i could lace up to the original 3speed hub...

Is the steer tube/stem 1 inch or 1 1/8 inch on this?

spaceliner / jc higgins crown race size?

my cups and crown race are shot. Pitted and rusted badly. I got new cups via a wald 4080 headset that fit right in. Sadly the crown race that came with it did not. These goofy forks have no shoulder at all at the bottom of the fork crown....its just 1 inch all the way down. The tube and...

    jc higgins headset size

I have a flightliner i am rebuilding and the headset cups are trash. I need to replace them. They measure 34mm and i cant seem to find any headset that will work. Is there a go to headset for 1 inch forks that have 34mm cups? I know wald mades an oversized headset but it is only 32mm or so...

    The Ultimate Sears Spaceliner Reference

Anyone know what the seatpost size is on these? My caliper gets 20.8 if i measure mine. Do they make 21mm seatposts or 20.5? Ive got a frameset with a stuck post and i am likely doing to need a replacment once i get this one out.

Does this stem have the correct wedge?

I must have something wrong. It wont tighten the the nut keeps turning. That likely tells me the wedge is stripped perhaps. The bolt threads look fine and i dont think the entire wedge is spinning. It cant be. I am going to pull it apart and look at the threads of both parts with a magnifying glass.
  9. S

Does this stem have the correct wedge?

Is this the correct wedge for this stem? It seems to bottom out on this strange lip and not tighten properly. No sign of stripped threads on the bolt. I am wondering if this wedge is wrong for this stem and or the wedge itself is stripped. I got it second hand in the parts bin at a local bike...

Simple fender stay truss rod question

Which order do they bolt up? DO the truss rods go on the front axle first or do the fender stays? I have seen pictures of bikes online that have it both ways. I would think the truss rods would go first and then the fender stays over that....and then the axle nuts. Perhaps not. Perhaps it doesnt...

    Schwinn Fender thread size??

i tried 1/4-20 and it was way too big. I also tried standard and fine m5 and they were way to small.....slide right in. For the heck of it i tried an m6 and it went in and tightened up nicely. I guess i will run that. It probably doesnt matter much. I am almost certain they were not metric back...

    Schwinn Fender thread size??

What size thread is the bolt that threads into the fork crown from the bottom to hold the fork in the center of the fork on an old schwinn dx......probably late 40s - 50s? I have tried everything i have on hand and have nothing that works. I attempted to hand thread my taps into there and it...

    replacement chain size

Thanks. I ended up getting the brown kmc and it looks fine. Next items to hunt for are some tires and a stem and i can reassemble. Thank you!
  14. S

    replacement chain size

Thanks. I am probably going to go that route. Seems cheap enough. I have completely derusted my old chain and it looks great. I soaked it for about a day in white vinegar and water. There are a few links that are frozen solid. I cant get them to budge much at all and i have been working at it...
  15. S

    replacement chain size

This might be a bit of a dumb question. What size chain fits a old 1950s balloon tire schwinn. It isnt skip tooth in this case. II have the old chain and it measures ~10.18mm at the pins and 8 or so mm at the skinny inside plates. I may or may not need a replacment. The orginal chain is...

    Schwinn DX Newbie

Thanks! I just ordered 3 feet. I should be good for hose cloth. I sure appreciate it though. Id be curious on the cover and what that takes to get done. Do you have your process or pictures? I certainly wouldnt expect you to go out of your way to make one just for me.
  17. S

    Schwinn DX Newbie

Heck...i found a guy that sells old hose by the foot........for a bit less then $3 a foot. That should work fine.

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

i wont get to the finish the welding until next week some time but that wont stop me from starting to build it back up. I even was rooting around in the garage yesterday and i found some old tires. I had an old skiptooth wheelset that i forgot about. I dont know if the tires are in good...

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

Update: I got the stem out. I had a buddy who worked with a guy that did it. I had cut the head off the stem and gave the fork to him for removal. It was quick for him. He had a vice and a hammer. He didnt even need the torch. The wedge is out and the stem.... Then he was able to get the broken...

    Schwinn DX Newbie

I think that turned out looking very good. Id be curious on the fiberglass piece you fabricated. I have the same seat in the same condition and i am wanting to do something similar. I used to have long section of fire hose but got rid of it 2 years ago. I wonder if they just sell that thick...

seatpost is fine. I got that out.

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

Thanks for the encouragement! I like a challenge.
  23. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

yeah.....the wedge. The bolt for the stem is long gone. The previous owner must have snapped that trying to loosen it would be my guess. I did run a punch down inside the stem hole but didnt have one long enough to bottom out at the bottom of the fork. The fork has no outlet hold on the bottom...
  24. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

Thats the hope. I was actually glad to see it was this type of stem for a change and not solid. I am hoping that makes it a bit easier. The top crown race is a bit fused to the stem as well. It wont budge. I am probably going to ruin that getting it off. I am hoping i can get a pipe wrench to...
  25. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

Thats exactly what i did. I used a dremel and ground away at it carefully. Fender came off and i didnt even nick it with the grinding wheel. Piece of cake. It was harder to get the extension cord out and plug in the dremel. I need to get myself a cordless one some day. So much handier. I am...
  26. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

hmm......i do have a buddy with a welder......but im not sure he is up to this. I will ask him. It all depends on if i can get that pesky stem out. Thats the next order of business. Here is a picture of this thing as i picked it up.
  27. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

hmm.....and it looks like im done. I was removing the rear fender/wheel and stripping the frameset to prep to get the fork out. 2 cracks somehow on the same side.. one above the brake bridge and one down by the dropout. It appears to be rust related. I am not sure how this is even possible...
  28. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

Both options i would like to try and avoid if possible. I know i will be able to get the fender off. It is pouring rain right now so it is going to have to wait. Its close to being off. The fork/stem debacle is another story. I am hoping once the fender is off i will have more options.for...
  29. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

Id love to drop the fork but that dang stem is really in there. I have to guess that it isnt the original stem to the bike. It appears to be one of the later stems.....one of those pressed steel or rolled steel jobs from the 60s? Like shown here...
  30. S

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

I checked my old 48 dx and my newer chrome fender 60s schwinn 3 speed curved bar and both front fenders appear to have a screw that threads up into the bottom of the fork. I suspect this one is supposed to do the same and someone bodged it. Then they tried to repair it by using metal square and...

front fender removal late 40s / early 50s???

IM going through my "new to me" spitfire and giving it a good regreasing and clean up. I need to get the front fender off and while the axle is is obvious the "under the fork" section is not. I figured once i got the wheel off, the fender would be attached with a screw / bolt to the under...

    Schwinn DX Newbie

i really really like the firehose seat cloth idea. How did you attach it to the rusty pan? i have a simular condition bike and need to do somthing simular here and this looks fantastic. Did you skin the hose and sew a couple of pieces lengthwise to get it wide enough?
  35. S

Late 40s early 50s tire options

still soaking that stem. It wont budge.
  36. S

Late 40s early 50s tire options

Ah those tires look great. Thats probably what i will go with provided i can get this stem out. Thank you for the link. I have had that style of chain tread tire before and they are nice. I believe that is what i have on my Monarch Rocket.
  37. S

Late 40s early 50s tire options

I should also mention the stem is rusted in extremely bad. I have been spraying pb and kryoil on it all day. I am going to let it sit for a few days. I have tapped it with a hammer etc. I am hoping it will finally break free with enough time.
  38. S

Late 40s early 50s tire options

i picked up a old straight bar schwinn today....not schwinn badged but made for someone else. It has about 4 coats of house paint on it and the fenders are all dented. IT is a train wreck The tires are shot I know they make the diamond patter squared off tire but i am not sure that would...

What bike did you ride today?

This.....This is exactly what im trying to build out of an old roadmaster frameset i have. I have to assume that chrome fork is the Sunlite fork? I have the same one. I am super curious on your wheeset. What did you use here? Is it a ballooner wheelset or a MTB wheelet? Also......i am super...

    amf roadmaster skinny seat post

i took a meaurement on it and it appears to be 16mm? So i have a 16mm solid seat post that is too short. 1. where do i source one of these that is longer? 2. what seatpost clamp fits this thing? I have never heard of one so small.

    amf roadmaster skinny seat post

Ive got a rather short seat post for my amf road master balloon tire bike. IT is solid. Where can a source a longer one. THe odd thing is i think it is smaller than 20mm. Ive never seen one quite so skinny. I think what im going to try and do is build it up and then sort of if ill need a laid...

    one piece crank removal question

the drive side cup is out and out came the crank. How do i tell if it is bent? Laying it flat on a bit of wood that is just a bit wider seems to show that it is straight. I have never run across a bike you have to remove a cup to get the crank out. Odd. IM out of ideas. Ill put it back together...

    Columbia Help

based on the link to the website you have in your profile........i compared the head badge and it has a 1960s style badge. Ill get the serial number when i get a moment. Thanks for the info!
  45. S

can you get the model from the serial number?

chrome for sure. Panther it is then. Thank you guys! I want it black again bu that gold has probably been on there too long to try to remove it at this point. IM still going to clean it up. It already looks 100x better than these photos.

    Columbia Help

I picked this up. I like it. Its going on the bench next. 3 speed rear SA AW hub and you can make out the stars and strips bands around the tubes. Other than that....i have no clue what model or year. Can anyone help? I love the look of it. I plan to redo the 3 speed on it, throw some brakes on...
  48. S

can you get the model from the serial number?

This probably doesnt help much. The gear shift is a SA yet the rear hub says Approved by Schwinn Made in Austria?

can you get the model from the serial number?

I have a Schwinn 3 speed 26x1 3/4 wheeled bike i picked up last weekend. From the serial it appears to be a 1960 model. What models came as 3 speeds? I know the Corvette did. Are there others. This thing was originally black but has since been painted dull gold. I can see top tube remnants where...
