In the 1894 Columbia Catalog, they showed a saddle on each of their models but you were also able to have the option to substitute another Columbia saddle.
Great work David. Can you keep me informed of your progress on the brake lever? I might like to buy one for my second Roper replica, if you're willing?
I managed to get hold of a Model 34. This was originally supplied with a spoon brake on the front tire. I was removed ages ago as most men...
David, I also was looking for the handle for my first Sylvester Roper steam bike replica. With a couple of years research, all I could come up with the same pictures you posted! In the end I fabricated one from Aluminum but I wasn't really happy with it. I believe the original must have been...
I just got my 1894 Columbia back on the road. I spent several days removing rust and preserving the original chain. In the end i was very happy with the results and yes it is heavy!
Thanks guys for all your reply's! I still would like to find someone with an original Columbia from the mid-1890's that would be able to give me a as-built prospective on the hub size and axle dimension to ascertain if bushes were actually used?
I picked up the 1894 Columbia Model 34 without hubs. I am setting it up as a rider and the method of attaching the front hub is something that has puzzled me. The fork leg has no dropouts only 11mm (7/16") holes. The front axle I'm going to use is 8mm (5/16"). See the attached pictures. The...
I have a 2 pin wrench as shown but it's too fragile for this work. I'm going into town Friday and pick up a adjustable hook wrench as shown on the right. I'll then be able to put a pipe over it for more leverage. Interesting that you think the bearing race is left handed and the locknut...
Here is another problem I'm facing. As received one of the 2 chain adjuster's was broken off! in the past someone had made a slot and tried to remove it. The slot is stripped open so a screwdriver only slips off. There are a few threads sticking out the bottom. I was thinking of getting a...

I'm having trouble removing the crank bearing lock nut on the 1894 Columbia. I've tried numerous soaks with liquid wrench, heating with a pencil torch, hits with a brass rod, and C spanner. I really don't want to damage these 124 year old antique parts as they aren't replaceable! I would...
I was able to pick up a Pope Columbia Model 34 Frame and Fork. I urgently require hubs to get the bike on the road. The rear hub with skiptooth sprocket is of prime importance!
Great Find!! My Replica was based on a 1894, Model 36 but I used a lot of the measurements given to me by Mr. Columbia on the Model 34 he had at the time. The Model 34 is shown in the 1894 Catalog? It might have been available in 1893 but I don't have a copy of the 1893 catalog to verify.
My site picture shows the 1894 Roper replica I made over a 4 year period. Rope's first bike from 1868-9 is in the Smithsonian. His 1894 bike, actually I believe 2 were made, one for Col. Pope as a pacing bike for the Columbia Racing Team and the other he kept. These were based on a 1894...
Roper built 2 of these using 1894 Columbia Model 36's. One was for Col. Pope owner of Columbia and one for himself. Roper built about 10 vehicles duing his life time. He built the worlds first motorcycle in 1868-9 which is in the Smithsonium in D.C.. His first car was in around 1860 and the...
I'm actually building a Sylvester Roper steam bike bassed on the Columbia Model 36. He built 2 in 1894, one for Col. Pope and one for himself. The bikes only had a front spoon brake but the rear hub was based on the originalhub less sprocket and brake parts. Columbia had 2 of Model 32's. One was...
I've just checked and the Model 32 Roadster also had the rear wheel band brake! I'd also like the inside dimension of the drop outs both front and rear?
Hello Bike Junk,
The Model 36 of 1894 had a reer wheel bank brake. I'm really interested in getting dimensions of the rear wheel hub.
Kind regards,
Myron
Does anyone know the the dimensions (width and height) of the 28" Hollow Steel rims made by Columbia around 1894? I want to order a set of Velocity Blunts and am not sure which rims I should go for? I need a 28 spoke front wheel so I can either use the standard Velocity Blunt or the SL. The...
I'm an American living in Hong Kong and plan to bid on the Copake Auction on the 19th. If I'm successful is there someone out there who is able to pick up a 1890's bike and dissassemble to place in a SERFAS bike transport case for me? I will have the bike case picked up by FEDEX or other courior...
