Sweet ride, love the radiant green. That is a very nice looking machine you have there. You asked if GTs suggested was due to rarity or comfort, to which I was say both 😉.

This past summer I picked up and early 60’s Schwinn from friend’s dad, also my former neighbor. Anyway, he texted a couple days ago and said he found a couple things I might want. I stopped by to see him this morning and he gave me these. South Haven is my hometown and ‘73 is my birth year so...
+1 for leaving them. Great find, and yes, the reverse paint scheme is extra cool. Those tires…holy crap! Hard to come by that seat, let alone in that good condition. Great bike, should be a fun one to work on bringing back to glory.

Speaking of gold, here a real gold Schwinn.
Does gold plating count as a color? Not mine but i did see it in person, early 70's gold-plated Schwinn Varsity. Here's a link to the story behind the bike (a Schwinn contest for dealers at the annual convention)...
I recognize that pic 😀. Sometimes wish I hadn’t sold that one. Tim, your bike is coming along great!! Are the new white grips what you’re going with for the final product? I only ask because they aren’t quite the same as what would have been original, and you’re putting so much time and...
Certainly could be, but it sure looks odd, especially if it had the front carrier…assuming this bikes chrome rims and Deluxe Typhoon guard are original.

Depends on how long your rides are. I’m 6’ 1” and can go a few miles without any real issues. Siestabike’s recommendations are spot on if you want to really ride the bike for extended periods of time. Old Schwinn middleweights are fun to cruise on, nostalgic, and eye catching but are not...
@Tubender My copy of Glenn's Complete Bicycle Manual has many great diagrams for many of the hubs. If you want to look to see if it has any specifics for the SC3 let me know and I'll take a look, take pics, and upload.

Just about done with this one. Only need to clean the chain and she should be ready to roll again. Overall pretty pleased. Back section of rear fender is pretty “used” but it still presents nice and is good for another few decades.
Only changes I made from how I received it are:
-Added the...
I almost always take them off too but 2 of them are on the checkerboard decal and are dated 61 and 62 so I’m certain than decal looks great underneath but the part exposed is quite faded. And I’m not sure how easy it would be to take the stickers off a decal without damaging the decal. So those...
Most of the “smalls” and chrome parts are cleaned up so started in on the painted parts, front fender and chainguard to start. It’s cleaning up nicely. Sometimes I get bummed when the paint isn’t all in better shape but then I try to put it in perspective they these bikes were used and some more...
Love the chain guard…very rare
Also like the mounting of the 2 speed shift lever on the tank…drawing attention the to fact that the top bar has a Schwinn decal…very rare
😄😄
Making steady progress as time allows. Front wheel, hub, all clean and greased and ready to roll. Most of the chrome parts are cleaning up well. Was never gonna an “A LISTER” but I’m overall pleased.
Continuing to go through the ‘61 Tiger. Taking apart the front wheel for cleaning greasing and adjusting and on one side the bearing cage is disintegrated, the other side’s cage is fine. I know I’ve packed in loose bearings before but what I’m wondering is there a certain amount to use, and...
Thank you all. That puts my mind at ease. I guess I was remembering bikes without the front carrier and those had the keyed washer. Makes sense though that the collar/clamp will act as the washer and that it need not be keyed since the legs being attached will keep things in place while...
Thank you guys.
Gary, I do have a front carrier and in my memory the clamp was keyed and acted as the keyed washer as you state, but I just got my rack and clamp and it’s not keyed.
While taking apart my ‘61 Tiger I discovered it does not have the keyed washer. The threaded portion of the fork is of course notched for this, but can I get away without having it? Thought for sure I would find one in my parts stash but don’t.
I’ll attach a pic from my Glen’s to show the part...
I am a huge proponent of whitewalls on all of my middleweights but these are newer Kendas with almost no wear, and I’m trying to keep on a tight budget so will likely keep the black walls….for now LOL!
started taking this one apart today, came apart easily and even had some relatively new looking grease in the bottom bracket! Will post pics as I clean/grease/polish. Seat, front rack, pedals on the way.

Found this old photo a while ago and it brought back so many memories. I bought it new in either '85 (I think). First swap was the one piece cranks for Sugino CT175 3 piece (which I see in this photo). I know i added an ACS Rotor and eventually swapped the Peregrine mags for Peregrine 48s but...
Yup, that's the seat i was thinking too but I'm not picky for this bike, any Red S middleweight seat would do, same with pedals, not looking for exact correct pedals, some some period correct ones that could be found on Schwinns (bows, waffle, whatever).
Back when I was heavy into collecting Schwinns (50-60's middleweights mostly) we lived down street from a coworker's dad. This was probably 15 years ago, or more. He is a super nice guy, one that is just always pleasant to talk with and welcoming. He thought my interest in the Schwinns was...
always been a fan of your MW's Bob, especially these Panthers. That '59 takes the cake for me, hands down! Something about those painted fenders with the white tips...gorgeous!
Jay
great bike! don't you wish they could all be found in that condition. Like coasterbrake I too love the manual 2speed and those fork mounted brakes are awesome too.

primo example Bob. I've always had a soft spot for a killer campus green - it's a great color. Still up in the air about if whitewalls would have made it pop more or not :)

They are great little bikes, pretty “deluxe” with the light and tank. My daughter, who I bought this for, is heading off to college this fall. Time flies…
1968 Schwinn Fiesta 20" tires kid's bike in excellent condition. I've owned it for roughly 12 years. Completely disassembled it at the time I got it, cleaned and greased everything. It's ready to ride or add to a collection. Plenty of pics showing the condition. The tires were purchased when...
As a heads up, I’m planning on ending this DOND auction tomorrow at 6pm eastern time. Right now badbob is the high offer so they’ll go to him (assuming he wants them still since the 24hr grace period has passed).
Thanks,
Jay
Tried to get better pics of the code stamps, there may be 2 dots in the upper left quadrant of the 3 circle, so maybe 2nd quarter of ‘68 and not 1st quarter. I would never guess this would matter to anyone but hey, to each his/her own.

Two (2) Schwinn Westwind whitewall 20 x 1-3/4 S7 tires dated to 1968 + Schwinn Approved tubes that hold air. These came on a 1968 20" Fiesta I bought several years ago. I removed them and installed new repro tires & new tubes and these have been sitting in my basement. No tears, blow-outs and...
