Nice “55 in the background btw.
Hey Aaron,
I've never lengthened a chain but I have an alternative solution. This is a smaller DP Harris chainring. Not as pretty as yours but it would do the trick. Probably cost ~60.00 to get re-chromed and I'll be happy to send it your way cheap. PM me if you're interested.

Based on my limited knowledge of these it looks to be later than 34. Provided they are original, 26" wheels and Chrome fenders would be the primary features that suggest that. However, I'll let others with more experience make that call.
Regarding the 28" wheels to 29". Yes, it is...
An air hog RC Helicopter! "santa" brought one for myself and my 7-year-old. Xmas is a great excuse to buy myself things I could never get away with otherwise.
Bike related: new pair of bid shorts and a shell for the roadie in me. Sorry. Nothing vintage. Wouldn't trust my wife in that...
I second the Feedback Sports Stands. I have been using a "Pro" stand for the past 5 or 6 years and it is easily the best stand I've used. I bought mine when the company was still called Ultimate. Bike stands were actually a lesser part of their business. The bulk of their business was making...
I have a long term project that I keep getting drawn away from. I'm looking forward to finally finishing it up. Not really vintage... Well Vintage BMX maybe...
Great bike. Recreating the patina will obviously be tough. A good auto paint shop should be able to color match the tank. It won't be cheap but it'll get you the closest. I imagine there are ways to "age" a new paint job but I have very little experience in that area. It's a great bike with...
Actually, this is a freakin' awesome idea! However this is one of those things I would never ask my wife's approval for. If I asked she'd immediately shut me down, but once she sees it, she'd come around.
Here's what myself and others have done...
700c rims, in this case velocity blunts (29er rims) laced to new departure hubs. I picked up the hubs online for about 25.00 total. The blunts are a bit on the pricey side at about 60.00 apiece. You can find 700c rims for cheaper but the blunts...
If the heart of the bike is solid keep it. You will always be able to find a buyer of it and it sounds as if you are not certain you want to part with it. When in doubt, follow your heart, keep the bike.

Thanks and I hear ya'. I think had there been any shred of originality left when I bought it it would've been a different story. When I received it frame etc. it had what appeared to be a wasted blue and white paint scheme that wasn't original as I found clues to the original red in the BB...
I love everything about this bike! I really like the Truss frame and the parts on it are very cool as well. The Velocity Blunt/electra amsterdam combination works really well for the wheel set. They are strong and fit very well in the fenders.
Good luck and great bike!
Thanks! Good eye! The tires are Electra Amsterdams on Velocity blunts. As for the Saddle I don't have one yet. I'd like to get a vintage troxel style saddle but finding one that is in decent shape that doesn't cost a mint has been really really tough. If I can't find one I'll probably end up...
Nice work on the crankset Eric! In your experience will the wheelset by ridable after the repair or more for show. It would be a shame not to ride this one.
Tim
Thanks to you both!
I did the paint myself. I used a good quality automotive acrylic enamel from TCP. Not cheap, but it has a nice gloss that appears to be tough and doesn't necessarily need a clear coat. I bought a set of stencils off Ebay for the points. I used the triple point for the...
A couple of steps closer and even more blasphemy!
Starting to get everything put together at least as a mock up.
...and I finally got the wheelset built. New Departure hubset laced to velocity blunts.
This actually brings me to a question. The model D was turning slowly with a lot...
Nice! There are not many places where you can ask a repair question and have it answered by the guy who built what are highly regarded as some of best riding mountain bikes of their era.
BTW-Loved the C26 pictures on your flickr page. How many of those were actually built? Forget this...
Frank the welder? as in THE FTW, of durango/john parker/yeti fame? Really?
Based on the detailed nature of your response I'm not doubting it. Just cool to see it.
Definitely a psychosis, but mine isn't limited to only those that are old. I love all things with pedals and two wheels and enjoy riding them as much as building them. I have bikes built with modern materials, fillet brazed, welded and bonded, Even new bikes built to replicate vintage themes...
Very high quality bikes are still made in the US. They are just typically the realm of small builders and specialty shops and typically not mass produced. Below are a few examples from one of my favorites... Not cheap but beautifully done.
You'll find a lot of tanks/tool boxes like that. Problem is that particular tool box does not belong to that bike. It would fit a frame with different geometry such as the one pictured. The reason for the gap is that the tool box is mismatched.
Cool thread!
My first bike would've been a hand-me-down from my older brother. Surely an old green huffy with a tank from the late 60's. We lived about 30 minutes west of Denver in the mountains (Dad was a Geologist for the USGS). I learned to ride in the drive way which was relatively...
Thanks! It is custom, but not really a one off. The builder is a guy in Portland OR named Tony Pereira. He's built three of these and calls them a "Roaring 29er". The first is his personal bike and won the best off-road bicycle award at the 2007 NAHBS. Mine was his second build and he's...
Interesting question...
My personal preference has always been toward the pre-1933 Motobike. This is a current project.
My mountain bike is even a clone of that form built by a very talented frame builder with modern geometry and materials. It's even complete with all modern...
Seriously, Great old bike and the new wheels are a great complement. I would be surprised if it wasn't an older restoration, but it is definitely very nicely done. Love the pinstriping.
