Best of luck in surgery tomorrow, Mike. I spent 8 hours today at Hines VA Hospital and thank God my health problems are small, compared to some of my fellow vets I seen being wheeled around that place today. Regarding the folks that stand at the entrance to the swaps or sometimes actually...
I no longer collect bikes. Had a whole lot of bikes and parts and pretty much got rid of it all. Kept a few
and am happy with what I have. I don't want to start accumulating again, especially stuff I will never get around to working on. I kept 3 junkers that I intended to put back in service...
All of us here are blessed. The very act of us visiting or participating on this site demonstrates a desire to learn something new and to find some excitement. That equates to the enjoyment of your life. A true blessing right there! All of us have those down periods where we feel the...
There are no elite here. Everyone is here for fun. Sometimes there may be a little flak if someone permanently alters an old hard to find frame, but that's about it. Anything goes.
Have had several friends drink and smoke themselves to an early death. My brother did that. Terrible, terrible, terrible. The wife and I are friends with another couple. The husband just retired and has no interest in anything. He'll have a beer, maybe twice a month if they go out and will...
Two questions down, one to go. . . . The ventilated rims, sorry to say, are not an option. They are rusted through from setting on a damp floor without being moved for several years... .
I've had this old Ranger hanging flat from the ceiling for a long time. It's hard to take a proper photo of it. Took one with the shop lights on and another with them off. The camera view from lying flat on the shop floor:
Notice the shotgun resting on the top of the frame and pistol...
I'd go with the OA bath, if money is an issue. I don't think there's much paint left,[ but then again, I've seen some amazing results on some real turds] but at least you can get loosen the rust out of those deep pits, that sanding and wire brushing won't touch. Or, bite the bullet and buy...
Finished the "Paladin " belt today.
Haven't decided which bike to hang it on. The chess knight is already hanging on a bike. I cast a couple of them out of pewter melted out of an old tea set. The remains of the pot is next to the holster. Pewter casts good and is very hard, unlike lead...
Decided to hang the Ranger gun belt on the 36 Ranger. Much better match. The pistols are also"Rangers."
The photo in the spokes is tinker on his Phantom, taken 64 years ago....my, time flies.
Hey, Jim. Long time no see. Always good to talk to you at the shows. I don't think many here know that you once worked for Schwinn, here in Chicago. Really get a kick out of your crazy clown bike. My horse bike, pictured below, is long gone. Crazy bikes are lots of fun to build, especially for...
I'v since sold that bike and know it was re-sold later. Don't know where it is now. The only parts I re-used on that bike was the original fork and truss rods. Every part was badly rusted. Everything else was replaced by parts I had laying around.
Just finished the"Maverick" belt and holster. Always enjoyed James Garner in the western series, Maverick. Going to hang this one on the blue Hawthorne with Paladin's chess knight Holster. I make these for display, but they are adjustable so a kid could wear them. Every kid in the fifties...
He probably really believes the bike is what he's claiming. Back before eBay, computers and these camera phones, it was a real crap shoot driving to look at anything that was for sale. We used to have this great paper here in Chicagoland called "The Trading Times." Everything under the sun...
Don't ride much, but usually run into something interesting when I do. Fell in love with this 1918 steam tractor. The 52 Panther looked good parked next to it.
Really like these old steamers. This snowy week was a good week to take out the erector set and make a model of one. Been messing...
He sure was committed, I'll say that. Living in a shack in the middle of nowhere, like it was the 1800's. Crazy, but interesting fellow. I'm going to read what I can about him. Had a nice looking wood stove in his shack. Also, I hear they found out some more things about that D B Cooper...
Messed with this stuff a lot . Usually pretty good results. Did two pre-war Colsons the same week. Both original red paint. One came out nice, the other , the red paint ended up kinda pink. I mean, both were 39-40 Colton's. { What's with this bs correcting what I type? I typed COLSON 4 times...
Two separate bikes. Two re-plated chain rings. Both bikes made a popping / snapping sound when pedaled. Drove me nuts. Put the old Ching rings back on, no more sounds. Both were skip tooth. One a Schwinn, the other a Hawthorne.
Didn't know Al Bloom passed. Few people know, that in his youth he also raced motorcycles at the old Santa Fe Speedway, west of Chicago. It was comical how he'd always try to beat you down at swaps. At one swap, I had a mess of parts laid out on the grass that I wanted to get rid of. Put...
I don't understand any of this. So, what's all this mean? It never was 150 bucks? This was just a bs deal to test the water, to see which way the wind blows for this bike???
Nice to see an honest to God good deal like that. Looks like a '53. Nice way to start off the new year and end the old one. That bike will clean up nice. Let's see pictures of it cleaned up and being ridden.
Stamps are all common. Value 5cents each. Post cards, maybe 3 bucks each, the military ones a little more. What you have to do is: read what's on them. Anything historical mentioned? Look up the address on them. Does it still still exist today? Who lives there now? Look up the subject...
Possibly it's a weight distribution problem.
Imagine the stress on every part of this bike. That poor seat post. . . every inch of this bike frame is crying out. . . . "WE CAN'T HOLD OUT MUCH LONGER!!!!" Later, after a few more donuts, when she is no longer able to ride the bike, she donates...
The boy's bike with the Schwinn badge has the first issue of that springer. The short stabilizer rods were eliminated after a couple years, probably to save Sears a quarter, which was unfortunate. Always liked the looks of those springers, but they don't work like a springer should. All the...
I have never watched "Scooby doo." I had to look it up to see what she looked like, and yes, other than the skirt, I would imagine my ideal woman pin striper would look like that. Brown hair. Worn bluejeans with old paint smears on them, but fresh white tennis shoes. . . Still lives at her...
I didn't attend this year. Many see photos like these and think the older ballon iron doesn't show up. Since it's an indoor only swap and outdoor sales are not allowed to be set up in the parking lot, what you see in the above pictures is pretty much what shows up inside. But, trucksoads of the...
Myself and George at a Veterans Day celebration at his school. Taken yesterday. It took about 25 years to think of myself as a veteran. To me, veterans were always someone that served in long ago wars. Never gave it much thought. When you finish your hitch in the service, unless you opt to stay...
Went into the shop after lunch and couldn't help but notice how bright and colorful it was. Some items stand out better in daylight, like the old marbles stored inside glass bottles, displayed in the sunlit windows. At night, other items stand out and the old bottles and their colorful contents...
Them cups can drive one nuts. I've bought many bare -bones frames and thank God over the years I've saved a drawer full of cups. Never toss the rusty ones out. Sometimes the only thing keeping a project from completion is one missing cup. Like Ozzie, I've used shims and also smacked a tiny ding...
It shouldn't read"restored." More like, "put together." Any frame that's still in primer after being put together, especially after 10 years, will have to be sanded down to bare metal before being painted. He probably polished and waxed the bike for photo.
Got mine today and the quality is perfect! I have an old mirror I'm going to put one on. Am giving one to a friend for his old car and the others will go on bikes. Nice job making them. Thanks, Jeff!
